When you find the gauge you like you can use the Stringjoy string tension calculator to adjust for different tunings and scale length. I like the DR Neon coated strings because they are easier on your fingers.
Great info Dunn. I'm one for jumping in and having a go with a setup though. Just watch multiple videos to get tips on what to do and GO SLOW and write down exactly what you did!!! Writing down what you did allows you to go back if something didn't work or have notes for next time - eg change in humidity and neck moves. The first guitar I did any setup work was my Fender Elite Strat. The shop I got it from did a totally crap job of addressing my fret buzz concerns and left the neck with no relief. I reckon I turned the truss rod maybe 1/8th of a turn, waited a day, checked, adjusted again (I think over the next few days) and it's a lot better now.
The scale of the guitar is a huge factor too. I just got a new Ibanez S and it feels way different than My ESP that is 24.75 scale with 10-46 strings. Ill probably try 9.5s next on the Ibanez. Good stuff brother. \m/
D’addario NYXL- Juggernaut ( Drop tuning) Hybrid slinkies light/ Power Slinkies- Ibanez ( .9-.46) I think this is where the zero point system really shines because I just changed to lights yesterday and all I had to do was take the tension out of the ZPS and it plays great
Yeah this is exactly what I do. Get different guages, and try em out. I was using 11-52 D’addario for C standard and it was too light. I’m currently using Ernie ball 11-54’s. I’m considering going up to 12-56 because the 54’s are lighter to me. I’m a former bassist so that’s the big thing
@@DUNN.. and maybe the more I play the guitar in C, with those 11-54’s I may change my mind. My guitar player in the band uses 11-48’s for C and it sounds decent. I do have a heavy picking hand too. Cheers ole boy and catch you in the next vid! 😁
I like 10-52 in drop C on my 26.5 Ibanez rgd. Just got a Jackson pro plus ht6 multi scale 25.5 to 26.5 that I want to use for drop C# thinking about making a hybrid set of 10 and 13 from a 10-46 set and then just use the low strings from a 11-49. I use daddario nyxls.
You’ve definitely put lots of thought into that and would’ve done lots of experimenting and exploring. I’ve even went down the tension calculator road . There’s so much to learn about guitars 🎸
@@DUNN.. yeah I’ve been playing for 9 years now. Just bedroom hobby guitarist. I’ve experimented a lot. With different scale lengths and tunings. Usually ended up with 24.75 or 25.5 in drop C# with 10-52. But then I wanted a more modern clearer brighter sound so I decided to try the rgd. Honestly the clearest cleanest sounding guitar. Because of the scale and the stock dimarzio fusion edge pickups have to be the most balanced passive I’ve tried. The fishmans in the Jackson are the same way as far as actives go plus they have the passive voicing too for more of a rolled up old school feel
Can you do a lesson on setting up a guitar.. my guitar has a compound raduis 12-16mm.. and i bring it to a luthier.. and its really expensive to set up..
Lots of things to consider with a guitar setup including, but not necessarily a definitive list: - are you trying to solve an issue (eg string buzz, intonation issue) or do you just want to improve playability (eg string height). - what type of bridge do you have (eg Floyd Rose style, Fender style tremolo, no tremolo, but something like a TonePros tuneomatic) - are you looking to change string gauge Most setup things don't take that long to learn and definitely save you money. I'm slowly expanding my knowledge and I'm sure Dunn will have a tonne for you with his awesome collection and many more years of playing 🤘
@iduncanw amazing points, I’ve definitely solved all those problems or encountered them. It’s very hard to think of all issues someone might encounter or problems to be solved then articulating them in a video format. It’s definitely a trial and error approach as each issue arises.
In my case, I found that using 11 or 12 guage strings for drop B or A makes them stay in tune better. I don't know if that's because of my crappy guitars 🤣 P.S. I do have a 12 guage strings guitar on E standard...👀
