You will have to go by the sweet smell of the Charentais as well as the change in color. The melon will turn tan. Unlike other types of Cantaloupes when it's ready to be picked the melon won't just fall off the vine. The stem is very tough so tough it needs to be cut. Make sure the cantaloupe is not left outside to long because the bugs love them too. They can tell when the melon is ready as well. The melon is firm on the inside as well as the outside.
