What is the Best Tasting Cantaloupe? How to Harvest a Cantaloupe? The answer is the Charentais melon but this is Bear Brown's opinion. This Cantaloupe's aroma is so strong and super sweet. This melon is not found in local stores because it is very hard to ship. This melon will not keep a long time so stores won't sell it. If a store try to sell this melon it will cost around 7 or 8 dollars maybe more. This is another reason to grow your own food. You will be able to taste fruits and vegetables you may normally get to experience. I have never seen this melon before until I grew it last year. When to harvest this melon? You will have to go by the sweet smell of the Charentais as well as the change in color. The melon will turn tan. Unlike other types of Cantaloupes when it's ready to be picked the melon won't just fall off the vine. The stem is very tough so tough it needs to be cut. Make sure the cantaloupe is not left outside to long because the bugs love them too. They can tell when the melon is ready as well. The melon is firm on the inside as well as the outside. This melon taste better than candy and it's packed with nutrients. Grow this fruit and you will not be disappointed. Bear Brown approves this fruit as the best Cantaloupe ever.

I’m waiting to harvest the ones that are looking close to ready, but don’t want to cut them too soon. I’m in Central Texas, so 102 to 104° have been the environment they’ve been grown in and they’ve done very well on the trellis; the only thing that seems to really loves the heat, but they will crack, so it’s a balance, I guess. I have only gotten one melon per vine though. Hope yours did well and you got some great melons!

Good morning Living&Growing, how are you? That's great you are growing cantaloupes for the first time. Charentais is great I let family members taste it and they said this is the sweetest melon. I told them it's another variety of cantaloupe. I will say they do Crack a lot on the vine so I plant another variety too but it's worth it the taste, WOW 👌. GOOD LUCK and it you find out Why they Crack a lot let me know.

Thanks Bear, you are so right about Cantaloupes very short shelf life. If there is a variety sweeter than Ambrosia Hybrid I have to try it. I will report next year. Also, I saw somewhere that melon worms can be avoided by early planting, that has worked for me before. Cantaloupes can be started before Watermelons. What is the maturity date for the Charentais?
@GrowSomethingTasty
@GrowSomethingTasty Год назад
HELLO, Mr. Daniel, thanks for the information. The maturity date is 75 to 90 days for the Charentais. Do you fertilizer your melon plot at the end of the season or at the beginning of the next season?
@DanielUtley-wk6qw
@DanielUtley-wk6qw Год назад
I put down a base fertilizer according to my soil test before planting, then I fertigate nitrogen weekly through my drip Irragation .

Easiest way to tell if the fruit is ripe on any melon is to check the closest set of tendrils to the fruit. The fruit is ripe when the tendrils dry up.

If you pull off the vines or prune cantaloupe it takes away from the sweetness do not prune the off shoots . You can take a few bottom leaves for circulation but that’s it . Cantaloupe is not like watermelon vine when we prune to make bigger. Just leave them alone it’s better to have small tasty melons than big bland ones .

I make really good sour pickles... Very easy recipe. 3 cups water, 2 cups white vinegar, 1/4 cup kosher salt. I bring it to low boil then turn off the burner before canning. BTW this same mix make the very best ice box pickles ever. I dont boil the mixture for the ice box version though.

@denisemiller8474

They easily come off the stem . If they come off before they are ready stick them on the counter for three days then refrigerate. It also says don’t water your melons a week before harvest
@GrowSomethingTasty
@GrowSomethingTasty Год назад
I know the hales best come off the stem when pressed, I rarely had these to come off. Did yours come off easily ? When I get that smell and the colors change, I get them because that cracking gets me. Then the bugs eat good.

Do you have squirrels or other critters messing with these melons or watermelon ? I noticed you dont have them "protected" from critters.

HELLO Paula, yes yes this was my first year dealing with that. I did a video on it. This has been tough. The squirrels don't mess with my stuff, but the rabbits this year have been a major problem. Wait and the rats.

@@GrowSomethingTasty when we first moved to our property, there were field mice because of variety of fruit trees. Since I started adopting, correction….since the rescued & feral cats adopted me, we haven’t had any problems for over 25 years now. Also, opossums are welcome guests in my garden because mice/rats are afraid of them. Opossums will kill them on sight!
