Ben explaines that breaking a fast and staying in ketosis are not necessarily the same. He described two types of fasting: a caloric fast and a nutrient fast. While consuming calories breaks a caloric fast, consuming certain nutrients can maintain a low insulin state, similar to fasting, allowing the body to continue burning fat and producing ketones.
Dr. Bikman supports the inclusion of a little fat, such as dairy fat, during fasting to maintain this metabolic state. Dr. Bikman himself practices this by adding butter to his morning yerba mate, emphasizing the unique benefits of dairy fats like ghee, cream, and butter.

I have listened to hundreds of hours of education on keto to help with my health recovery; it's working! Dr. Bikman is my all time favorite! I love the science and the presentation...thanks for all the help, I feel 20 yrs younger. Today I hit a 75 lb weight loss...it'd be embarrassing if I didn't feel so darn good! 💃💃💃

Wow a 2fer day!! I really appreciate this segment as I want to stay in the ketogenic state as long as possible to reverse my Fatty Liver. It seems that 3 months of carnivore, no alcohol, and no FAKE sugar.....has not yet reversed the condition. However, in all honesty I have probably have had the fatty liver for at least 20 years. So here goes another 3 months of carnivore. Oh as an aside I had an ultrasound on my liver this past Monday, and still a fatty mcfatty liver.... but it hasn't progressed into NASH so I am thankful for that!

Keep doing carnivore. If you haven't tried time restricted eating, that is also a great way to reverse fatty liver because it forces your liver to produce the energy durning your fast. Fatty liver is just stored energy, and fat is turned into ketones, so dont eat, and your liver will turn the fat it has stored into ketones. Me and my wife do one meal a day Monday through Thursday, then do a strength training session on Friday morning. Then, Friday through Sunday, we will eat lunch and dinner. Then repeat.

My husband was diagnosed also with fatty liver. I asked his doc if Tylenol could be causing it, she laughed. Just to see I had him stop all Tylenol consumption! He wasn’t a happy camper, but lo and behold next liver test showed no more fatty liver🤷🏼‍♀️ Couldn’t hurt to try if you take lots of Tylenol for chronic pain. Good luck

For some conditions pure carnivore will take time, adding in supplemental antioxidants such as glutathione precursors like NAC might speed up the process, as well as exercise to stimulate glucagon and AMPK

There was a well known Turkish Guy from my town of Stanhope New Jersey that took to Bicycling all Day long in the 70's & 80's. Jon Unalp would Drink a Pint of Half & Half and say it's High Octane Fuel.

I feel like caffeine has an insulin response. I always got hunger pangs after tea and coffee. I stopped caffeine. Although I think the effect of breaking a fast is neglible and caffeine itself may have some effects on metabolism. Caffeine actually made me crazy depressed and the withdrawal was insane.

Goat dairy is known for its higher content of medium chain fatty acids. So, coconut and goat cheese or milk are good natural sources of MCT fats.

Caution with goat milk in excess. It's deficient in b7. According to Paul mason coconut oil doesn't trigger bile release and may have negative effects on cholesterol but that's a rabbit hole. I had my issues going full coconut and don't recommend it in excess either. But as you've said, it's ketogenic.

@@carnigoth Wait, Why wouldn't coconut oil trigger bile? it's got long chain fatty acids, so... don't they trigger bile? they can't be digested otherwise and then we'd have oily poops. Is there a study or some trial that shows that coconut oil doesn't trigger bile? I'm curious now.

this is music 🎶 to my ears! I love dairy, especially French , Dutch and Swiss cheeses. Good to know that expert Dr. Bikman is an advocate of dairy. so I can happily consume it for better health.

I had a CGM for a month. It was boring. Only went over 140 once. Being in ketosis is most important. If I understand you (and your book) correctly, staying in ketosis is first priority for knowing my insulin is low since I can't test it. And thank you for this post. I just started drinking coffee a couple months ago. Not sure if I'm more addicted to the butter and hwc, or the coffee. I think it has to be the former rather than the latter since I don't drink it black. 😂

If you arent coming down from a diabetes diagnosis then a CGM is just an extravagant luxury for people who want to have something to monitor in their spare time. Google can show you the glycemic index of any food, and if you stick with keto/carnivore and become fat adapted then the insulin spikes are just transient changes in a normal functioning body, you dont really need to monitor them, you can just feel if you're in ketosis because you can just know the supranormal sensation of energy and focus that it brings.

@@Darklion39 I have recovered from Type II and wanted to make sure I was responding appropriately to foods. I tried it once before to learn what foods that I thought would be “okay” weren’t. I am clean keto/carnivore now, but do miss the immediate feedback/reward. I will continue without it unless my numbers increase.

I understand that when you eat a "normal," glucose level shows a spike, and plato (time till you glucose level back to level before eating) means how good insulin works. Then I measure with regular glucometar before meal and after 30,60,90,120...min glucose levels. If after 90 -120 minutes is as before a meal, it is a sign that insulin is ok. I don't know yet if it is same thing on keto, carnivore etc.

What are your thoughts about adding dairy fat or c8&c10 during a nutrient fast? Would either stop autophagy ?

Depends on the dairy. Milk has a lot of lactose and is generally insulinogenic. Butter is amazing to aid a fast and it has a very low insulin response. Full fat cream will be in between. However it affects autophagy is unknown. Don't fear animal fats.

So, you mean that if i eat an egg or 50g of meat or some bacon, each couple of hours, 6 times a day, for example, it would be the same of 18 hours of fasting and make 2 or 3 meals?

I definitely add cream to my coffee, a lot of heavy cream and a teaspoon of Mct oil just bc I want to , and I stay marginally in ketosis , per keto mojo monitoring
