I'll take ball return anytime over the conventional drop pockets. It's a hassle if your aiming for one specific pocket mostly as they can clog up easily. Then there's the fact that you have to grab them from the drop pockets at the end while walking around the table. With ball return you just grab them all at once and can store them there when the table is not being used.

I agree Stuart. Makes life far easier I think. The benefit of drop pockets is the lack of noise, cheaper table price, and a shallower cabinet if use for pool dining tables.

@@HomeLeisureDirect Hi, maybe my comment is a little late, i know, just watched this now because i was interested in what you might say. Well, i´ll be playing pool myself for about 25 yrs now, played in the highest national league here in austria, as you might will imagine, facing opponents like Albin Ouschan, Mario He and Max Lechner. I like the game of Straight Pool most of all, a perfect training game also, you can play it alone. And even better, when your skill is improving in straight pool you´ll automatically improve at 8,9 or 10 Ball too. It is always a pain in the a.. when having no gully return and playing alone as you can imagine. The downside on this system is also that you always have to wait for the ball to come out, mostly the "albino" :-) Mean, that you have to wait and/or to go down the table. For racking our little guys of course it´s the best. Anyway, gully returns dissapeared round here in austria, i got used to it quickly but still miss it. Some of those Gully Returns have had a beautiful sound, supporting your rhytm while playing. Especially the Brunswick Gold Crown III. The gully return was made out of 3 metall rods, i enjoyed it even it was a bit loud. The most pretty sound nowadays delivers of course the Diamond ProAm with gully return, it´s silent but you can of course hear it and it´s relatively fast. Sry for this long comment... :-))) Kind regards from Carinthia/Austria, Christian

Ball return tables are awesome, I hate drop pockets, it's so annoying going around and taking some out only to put some back into empty pockets or less balls in it ones I love the feeling of potting a ball into a return system pocket and hearing and or seeing it go back to the outbox

When I play billiards for the first time at 16 years old in 2017, it was a coin-op billiard table with "ball return" system. It was satisfying but I would consider buying a billiard table with "drop pocket" system someday, mainly because I usually see this type of billiard tables in televised matches, back when I was 6 years old in 2007!

My aunts (and everyone else) have a pool table with the drop pockets, so it felt weird that one of my dad's friends had a ball return where all the balls go into a drawer

I hate the noise of a ball return. You walk around the table hundreds of times in a night of playing. What's one more to rack?
@wingmanalive

Been playing for over 30 years, on all types of tables. For me a drop pocket is a classy design. On most bar/pub tables you'll get that repetitious sound of the balls running through the table to the return. To me that's a cheap sound. Drop pockets are quiet and like you said, have less mechanical parts. Another reason I prefer drop pockets over returns (and this is trivial I know) is because of table cloth wear. If you're always breaking from the same side of the table the cloth will wear prematurely under the rack. It's just physics. With drop pockets you can easily break from either side, thus balancing the wear. Yes you can always rack on any side on either table but if you look at a commercial table in pubs you'll see what I'm talking about. Patrons couldn't care less about your equipment (and many times house guests) or how their play affects it. At $200 a shot, you could easily spend as much on cloth replacement over the course of its' lifespan than what the table cost. Especially if you pass the table down to your kids. That table could give 50+ years of service and even if you only refelt it every 5 years or so it adds up. Then again if you only play a couple times a year it's probably not a concern but for me, when I could shoot 4+ times a week, it makes a difference. Just my $.02.

Nice video. How do I clean lint or dust etc... out of ball returns?
@lukie7691

okay but what if you scratch with a ball return? Then you gotta find that in the ball return? And if its one of those tiny ball returns, you'll have to pull balls out to get your cue ball.
@HomeLeisureDirect
@HomeLeisureDirect 5 лет назад
Cue balls in English Pool Tables are a little bit smaller than the object balls, and allows the cue ball to be separated so that the cue ball is returned to its own little collection hole and not to the general object ball storage (assuming it's a coin operated table).

I don't understand why all tables below 1k come with a ball return system but then he says drop pockets are simpler and therefore reduce the cost

Why in real tournament they chose Drop Pocket instead of return? To make memory which pocket did ball went into?
@HomeLeisureDirect
@HomeLeisureDirect 4 года назад
Generally because they're simply not needed in that kind of environment. It typically means that the table makers can focus exclusively on other aspects (such as the slate, cushions and set up) to make sure the table plays the best it possibly can in that setting.

do you sell any 7x4 english pool tables with drop pockets? can't find any on your website
@HomeLeisureDirect

Hey there, Pretty much all pub-style English pool tables (with the deeper cabinets) will utilise a ball return. You may have better luck with certain pool dining tables if drop pockets are important in your decision, namely some of our luxury pool tables (like the Montfort range).

I prefer drop pockets. The ball return tables sometimes has the balls get stuck inside! Drop pockets. You dont have to worry about that.
@HomeLeisureDirect
@HomeLeisureDirect Год назад
It's definitely a pesky problem when it happens, but thankfully blockages are very rare if there is a reduced risk of foreign objects getting dropped down the pockets (which is typically more likely in commercial venues). Good thing there's often a choice!
