Great! But I still need help. Are you saying AGM = SLA? Some of my chargers say FLA, SLA, and AGM as though each has a different charge profile. In this RU-vid you say that SLA and AGM is the same. Please enlighten me as to my misunderstanding.

Both are lead acid batteries. AGM has glass mat material that is the carrier for the acid and thus spill proof. If the case cracks it will not leak. SLA is lead acid technology just like the AGM without the glass mat absorbent material. An SLA battery is sealed and is maintenance free but will leak if punctured. The charging profiles, SOC, and discharge states are similar to my understanding.

very interesting video .. I have a question .. where are the sealed acid leads placed? are they agm or are they normal sealed lead acid batteries? perke I can't find the setting parameters for a solar regulator so all the balk floating charge values etc... can you help me? I thank you!!!

Logan, thanks for the insights into the differences between battery types. You mentioned that AGMs sometimes could use a little maintenance (but that can't happen). In your experience, how common is that? Also, how would I know if the AGMs are not working up to standards? I ask because we have Firefly Carbon AGMs and we are hoping to have a long trouble free relationship with them. [BTW - we are fans of Logan because he helped us with our PV cells and controllers]

Hi Logan , I have topped up an agm battery with distilled water and a battery conditioner solution, I have realised that the AGM batteries are not required to be filled to cover the dry cells as they are a dry Type of battery . I have removed as much of the solution added to the battery and are asking if there will be any major affect to the AGM battery after this procedure was carried out , Regards ‘Darryl

New subscriber here. Mine is sealed but I was told by the dealer it is a wet battery still. So my solar control panel is set for wet. Are they wrong? It sounds like it might be a agm

You usually do not want to equalize sealed batteries and they also will not charge to as high of a voltage as a flooded battery. If you have an AGM setting that will usually work, but you will also want to look online to see if the manufacturer has a manual and follow those recommendations. Thank you for watching!

I have a question, is a “lead calcium sealed battery” a good battery for solar application. I require a 200Ah capacity battery.

From a quick google this is still a typical lead acid battery however the calcium acts to reduce the water loss thus eradicating maintenance. You can consider it a sealed lead acid battery, probably fine for solar if you can't afford lithium.

Thanks for the comment. Lead acid batteries normally should be run to 50% depth of discharge. Check with the individual manufacturer specs on what they suggest.
