The FGC might be the most incredible institution in competitive gaming and over the years, it’s given esports’ some of its most memorable moments.
But where did this scene with such a rich history, built by dozens of iconic games and personalities begin?

This is on point. The FGC is about sharing, exchanging and enjoying fighting games as a community. The reason its so pure and real and not as toxic as others is because the FGC and EVO were literally founded by people who play and love fighting games. It wasnt a huge corporate company that just looked to make a quick buck its was created out of nothing by passionate gamers gamers for passionate gamer. No other game genre has a community like the FGC. A lot of the kids who recently got into fighting games due to the mainstream status of the FGC are toxic, tea bagging, self conscious kids who play the game only to assert dominance and feed their ego. Those people will never belong to the FGC or understand what the FGC is about. Im so happy and blessed this amazing community continues to be the most realest, hypest and authentic community in the world. Its as close to real sports as it can get. People coming together to enjoy and compete. Its all love.

Think about it like this, no serious fighting game player will sit there and take free wins all day because that's boring. Keep in mind we all are trying to improve, so, it does nothing to help ones skill. Depending on my opponent's mindset, of course, I'll sit there and play a few games. However, if there's no stimulation that's happening in my brain, then it's just a slugfest. No one is learning from that. Some may perceive that as me being toxic but it's just honesty. If I see they're taking my input and learning from that then it doesn't matter as much but I'ma still have my limit. People have done it to me coming up too, it's just part of it.

The thing that gets me is that fighting games is like they're one of the original esports and it gets so much less credit than games that basically consist of looking at spatial dynamics and pressing left click.

I don't know what it is, but no matter how flashy or view a game like League of Legends, DOTA 2 or CS:GO are eSports wise, the competitive fighting game scene seems to have something the rest don't have. It's definititely my most favourite eSport.

10:22 I kinda dig that you showed those two specifically. Johnny (Karin) has been trained by Momochi (Zeku) for a good while now and that was the first really big break out event for him, so to share the stage with his master was kinda awesome to watch. Through out that entire Top 8 Momochi was still watching in the background really wanting him to do well like any father figure/mentor would. And when they played even though Momochi did end up putting johnny out of the tournament there is a moment of "not yet my apprentice".

I'm from Argentina and played with uncle Valle one time on SFV thanks to twitch, and the power of internet.... also a lot of luck was involved to me being able to be randomly online at that time. He was super chill and even told me what I was doing wrong in the stream right after he kicked my ass hahaha. A lot of respect to that guy, he genuinely cares about the FGC!

A video about FGC history without Europe? You're missing a vital part of the scene. The current Street Fighter World Champion is from Europe I might add. Europe has also contributed to the survival of the FGC since the 90's.

Shame that if the FGC gets bigger we might get more esportified to losing the identity
@DuvJones
@DuvJones 5 лет назад
I am not so sure of that, because if anything the FGC will adapt. Some of the ranch and routy will go, some it it has to but as a kid of arcade culture, whom as seen (and lived though) the "dark ages"... More people playing, the better.
@mmmk6322
@mmmk6322 5 лет назад
@@DuvJones you might be right. But you know what? The FGC hand down has the best commentary! Maybe counter strike is second best at explaining what is going on, but FGC got the hype factor nailed with phrases that cross games and nations. DOUBLE LUIGI is my favorite of course

@sanur1124 5 лет назад
@@mmmk6322 Yeah some of commentators is a good. But there are many that just ruins match talking unrelated stuffs mid match they just ruin whole viewing experience. I watch some tekken matches muted because of annoying dudes
@DuvJones
@DuvJones 5 лет назад
@@mmmk6322 It's not hype, it's passion. Most commentary in the FGC, even at the professional level, always tries to convey the passion they have for the games that they play. Some esports do the same, but we are much louder & vocal about it... comes with being ignored for years. Some of that is just raw emotion, some of that is getting caught up in the hype, but it's a kind of passion that I can respect as both a player and a spectator. "FIghting game is so great" and the passion that we have for it is a BIG reason to why. I will admit that we need to show it more. We always need to show it more.

I've played fighting games since I was a kid but never took them serious just casually playing against family, friends etc. This past year I've been getting in to the FGC more by watching a lot of tournaments and there's just something about watching a hype ass set between 2 good players that just brings a lot of intensity that you just don't get watching other competitive games. I feel like it's the 1v1 aspect of a match that is just more hype compared to teams playing against each other.

I find the FGC breeds more personalities than other scenes on the whole, largely due to the fact you literally have to sit next to everyone you play against in tournament so people end up REALLY knowing each other and talent for commentary is discovered hella fast. I can’t think of a single scene outside the FGC with as large a pool of community leaders that are near universally loved. I also find this translates to some incredibly entertaining Smash Summits, whereas the CS and Dota variations seldom draw nearly as much comedic value without the help of third parties (take Slime, a Melee community member)

All i play is Smash Ultimate, but i love the history behind the whole FGC. Having legends such as Valle and Daigo, all the way to Armada, M2K and Mango staying in the scene really keeps it going. We don't have the money or the support that Dota 2 or CSGO have from the developers, because we support it plenty enough on our own, and i love that. but hey, Nintendo, psst.... pls sponsor tournaments

My first fighting game was Tekken 3 and I’ve always respected them, then UMvC3 and USF4 made me realize how much I love fighting games when I saw the crazy combos people were uploading on RU-vid. The FGC is such a great community with a lot of great people. If you are even a tiny bit interested, I really encourage you to give it a try, there are so many games to try nowadays it’s insane. It’s a steep learning curve but it is so worth it whether you just want to play with your fitness or try to be more competitive! Oh and one more thing, I HATE competitive team games because I have to depend on other people to pull their weight if we want to win. Sometimes you can play amazingly but still fall short if your team isn’t good. With fighting games, you are FULLY in control of the outcome of the match. There’s no one to blame but yourself which results in a deep level of being humble with most players I’ve run across.
