When I finally got to check out a Daytona in person, I was quite literally shocked by how small it was. Many years of only seeing it in photos, and it's legendary reputation had acclimated my mind to expect a robust chronograph, but in reality it was positively dainty LOL. Love your thoughtful renders, cool video!

The size is a mind-blow, right? Great proportions but it's a teeny tiny dial 😆 Personally (I know its subjective) I'd love to see them add 2mm's to it for that extra legibility and presence... maybe that goes against what the watch stands for today? And thank you Floyd!

Lol exactly my thoughts. I saw a guy wearing a white Daytona and weren’t sure if it is one because it looked SO small. I was really shocked how small it is in reality, not that I had the chance to look at one before lol

@@mark4605 It's crazy to think that it's one of the few that has managed to keep those "classic" proportions for so long while models like the Yachtmaster etc. have been beefed to 42mm's and so on. Imagine trying to tell the time with it? 😉

I enjoyed this video. As an owner (and wearer) of the white ceramic, I appreciated your neutral and impartial approach. I have a sneaky suspicion they will relaunch the daytona line in 2023 for the 60th anniversary. It is the only sports model still using the 11xxxx prefix (along with the AK and MG - niche models in the line up that are also due a refresh). The case and dial proportions remain unchanged since 1988. It wears much smaller than the other sports models, barring the 40mm YM, and needs to get bigger for more appeal. It's also the only sports line with such a variety of options. The other sports models have 6/8 options whereas the daytona has some 30+, comparable to the DJ, SkyD and DD. Rolex knows they have a winner with this watch, almost rivalling the nautilus as secondary prices are starting to approach it before it was discontinued. What a coup that is for Rolex, given it is less than half the retail price. If they discontinue it and re-release a new steel daytona, this one will skyrocket in desirability along with any new stele version, again, much like the nautilus is doing, and bring up the rest of the brand with it. In terms of aesthetics, it's not for everyone but I absolutely love mine, as do many others I know. I paid the premium for mine back in 2018 because I loved it so much and despite having had 5 other Rolex' since then, it still remains my favourite by far. I also have no problems reading the time instantly. Great video either way and enjoyed the discussion.

Honestly I think no one buys a watch for practicality. That is what I have my phone for. Its design, beauty, feeling and craftsmanship for me that makes a watch. The Daytona checks these boxes for me - I’m absolutely in love with the panda, the gold oysterflex “Paul Newman”, the gold and green (which I liked before the hype as it is the epitome of Rolex for me - the brand’s colours, on the most ubiquitous precious metal, on one of the pinnacle models) and the two-tone white dial. I like a few others as well, but those for me are instant buys at retail. I wouldn’t pay much over though - when you have to shell out so much more than its true worth, it becomes more painful and irresponsible than desirable and enjoyable for me.

I wear all of my watches, including the Daytonas. I buy watches to wear, enjoy, and sometimes show off a bit. When the ceramic version came out prices for the pre-ceramic ones began to rise more rapidly. I suspect the same would happen to the current models if Rolex released a re-designed one.

I bought the 2016 Daytona 5 months after release when it was only MSRP + 40% and thought "This is a bit too much". When it became summer however, I was amazed how fantastic it looked outside in the sun. Forget about legibility, it looks STUNNING and extremely EXCLUSIVE, especially worn on trendy outside cafees and restaurants and easilly competes with womens jewellery. TRY IT, if you got one! The + 150 % premium now is crazy, but not if you compare with the preivous Daytona models, thinking about the now extremely expensive Zenith models which practically costs nothing, but today is rivalling the 116500LN price wise. Go back further to the 38/39 mm vintage Daytonas and get the real shock, many many were made, still for sale everywhere all over the world, and fetches more than 60.000 USD - complete sets = double the price! And last, but not least the Paul Newman Daytona, only 5-10.000 (= not ESPECIALLY RARE) were made with this particular art deco dial no one wanted when introduced in the 70´s. In Denmark the watch was given away by AD´s free if you bought a Sub or a Datejust (can you imagine?). But the Italians made it famous due to just a single pic with Newman wearing it on the cover of a mens magazine, and the price exploded untill this day. So it´s all just about suply and demand. If Rolex produced all the Daytonas people wanted prices would drop to MSRP, but the iconic Daytona AND the brand would loose it´s exclusivity and it´s luxury status...just like for instance Breitling. And if everybody could buy all the Daytonas they wanted......How interested would you be in buying one?
@stewester
@stewester 2 года назад
Another couple of things I would change: 1. The somewhat blobular hour indices. These are a carry over from the 116520 which is a design very much rooted in the early 2000's. I would sharpen them up and make them thinner. 2. Add proper hash markers to the minute counter for 1, 9, 11, and so on. It just doesn't make sense not to have markers for them from a legibility perspective.

Those Zenith models were so ahead of their time when we think about that balance and how they arranged the dials. It's baffling that they changed so much. Nicely said 🥃

I love the Daytona for its case design and technical capability. It still has the graceful case that is shared with the Day Date, Datejust, etc., unlike the squared off cases of the Sub, GMTs, etc. The Daytona movement ensures the chrono can run 24/7 with little wear and tear (unlike a Moonwatch for example) and its movement is made of fewer parts than a comparable Zenith. The main thing I dislike about the Daytona is its dial. There is too much text and legibility could be improved. I much prefer chronographs with the 2-regsiter format and 6 o'clock date. The new Speedmaster 57 line is an example of a legible and useful dial. The future of the Daytona will likely include a glidelock-style clasp and perhaps new colours.

Another intellectual, eloquent and almost complete description. I wear my black dial model but am disappointed that the steel cases suffer with the right lugs being thinner than the left side. Rolex the difference is within their tolerance but the gold cases have equal sized lugs, hence the case protrudes beyond the bezel. The watch needs a GMT type case and is hard to read and use. "Never was so much hype applied by so many to so one standard model."

Few things that i found bizarre about some of the points made in this video: First, next year is the 60 year anniversary of the Daytona. Releasing a ceramic bezel Daytona did not reset the counter. Many people are speculating that next year the Daytona line might get updated. 2026 is the 63 year anniversary. Second, who are these interesting sources? Last time I checked Rolex is oneof the most secretive companies out there and this explains why no one can predict what they’re going to launch (Anniversary releases do not count). So “your sources” told you Rolex do not have a fixed plan? Rolex is owned by the Hans Wilsdorf foundation which is a charitable trust. Their only role is to make sure Rolex exists forever. They’re not worried about quarterly profits or paying dividends to shareholders. That’s the long term plan for Rolex and watches are in the centre of it. Rolex do not care about the longevity of their products? How do you explain the current generation Daytona running since the year 2000 till now? The only update the Stainless steel version received was the addition of a ceramic bezel 16 years later. Rolex do no focus on gradually evolving their watched? Take calibre 4130 inside the current Daytona. It was introduced in the year 2000 and Rolex has been gradually updating and improving it without making a fuss. Or Rolex going the extra mile to prevent the stretching in their old generation gold bracelets by introducing a ceramic sleeve that goes between the steel crew and the gold links to reduce any wearing of the gold links as they pivot on the screws. These are just 2 examples out of hundreds where Rolex gradually evolve their watches. You don’t have to love the brand but give them the respect they deserve.

I am fortunate to own a 116500 “panda” and I have to say it’s my favorite watch in my collection along with my 16710 “pepsi” because of how surprisingly smaller than I have originally thought it would be. I know it’s officially 40mm in the Rolex website but it’s really less than that and the curved case shape is a bonus for me as I’ve grown tired of the maxi case from other modern Rolex watches today. You are coming across as more than arrogant with your long list of how to make this watch more desirable. This is a grail watch for many because of its history, design and wearability. If you have worn one for a few weeks, you realize that it is near perfect. Somehow - despite your in-depth critique - it remains the most desirable Rolex. As a fan of vintage Daytonas, I’m of the opinion that the current generation is a Daytona in name only. The subtleties and restraint were lost sometime in the 80’s and this thing has become extremely blingy and over-designed - almost baroque. It’s a loud watch to get you noticed at the Yacht Club and mugged on the Subway. My wish for the Daytona would be to maintain the size and lose some of the ornamental fluff. Simple stick hour markers, a matte or brushed bezel, larger and perhaps quirkier markings on the sub-registers (not the main dial), as seen in past Daytona references. Last but not least, can Rolex lose the polished center links on the bracelet? If people are ever going to wear this again, it would be great if it wasn’t a scratch magnet. Rant over.

I never thought of it as an investment piece or something I'd keep as a safe queen. Unremarkably, I simply found it a handsome watch that was to my surprise, at the time, hard to get and uber exensive even at retail. Oh, well... There are plenty of other luxury chronographs that are worthy of attention and obtainable. I'll give it to the Daytona, it is nicely compact and slim for a mechanical chronograph.. I mean noticeably more so than most other modern chronographs. In the mean time, I think I'll wait for the MoonSwatches to become available online and get one then... jk, not really... Probably will end up with at least one. I probably could have Googled this, but where does the name or rather the meaning of "Cosmograph" originate from? Just curious as nobody else calls their chronograph a Cosmograph.

Hey mate, long time. I’ve been calming down from watches etc for the last couple of years with the arrival of my son. So I’ve had the steel white dial ceramic Daytona (as you picture) as my only and everyday watch for five years now. Love it and incredibly lucky to have purchase it at retail. Now, for some reason, I am back looking for another watch to add to the collection (perhaps because expecting another child now….who knows). I have very small wrists so the subs and GMTs are too big and not a nice fit like the Daytona….so I am now considering the new steel Explorer 36mm or the new steel Datejust 36 (jubilee bracelet, fluted bezel and blue dial with stick markers)…either as an everyday signature watch. I would still wear my Daytona but probably not everyday (as you say….is not most legible etc). If in my position, would you go for the new steel 36mm Explorer or the 36mm classic Datejust? Thanks, stay blessed Rez

Great seeing you Reza!!! A huge congratulations on your next child on the way 😉 It would be a simple choice for me (since these watches would be going to my children in the end) - the 36mm Explorer. It's unisex, simple and a great size that would make for an incredible watch to hand down. The Datejust is great BUT for a two piece collection, I love the simplicity of both the Daytona and Explorer together. Maybe even go wild and choose the new Two-Tone? If both are offered together, would you go for the two tone version over the all steel (if in my shoes) and do you think the two tone could be a versatile everyday piece that can be dressed up / dressed down for formal and very casual wear as a signature watch (as I would wear the Daytona less often I guess)? Believe it or not, I was able to walk into a Rolex boutique in 2012, saw a silver-colored Daytona in one of the glass display cases, asked the salesperson if it was white-gold because I knew the more costly precious metal versions were easier to get (more available) than the more sought after, least costly stainless steel versions. The salesperson said “no”, it was a s/s version. My eyes lit up and immediately asked if it was for sale. He said “no” again, that it was waiting to be picked up by the buyer, HOWEVER, he might be able to order me one. Needless to say, I was completely dumbfounded. I had been on multiple wait lists across three US states (moving because of work) for 12 years. Some of the earlier wait lists had older phone numbers of mine so I knew my chances were less than zero that I’d ever receive a call back. So I couldn’t believe what he told me and asked what’s the catch? I told him of my story and said to me, since we (the jeweler) had just spent a couple of million of dollars to invest in a stand-alone a Rolex boutique, next to their existing store, then, as a reward, Rolex was willing to allocate a few Daytonas to them. It was a beautiful boutique, all gold/rose marble and glass. He went on to say there might be one still available and that I could try. I thought I had won the lottery and charged it to my credit card right away, not even quite sure how much I had in my account to pay it off, but this was a once in a lifetime opportunity. My s/s white dial Daytona (he even asked me which color dial I wanted!!) came in around 3 weeks later. And I WAS able to scrounge up the funds to pay it off. Sometimes, just sometimes, dreams DO come true.

"A design that works for all occasions" when describing the Chronographs offered by Tudor, Brietling, zenith, and others? The beauty of the daytona is the case proportions and how it is truly wearable with both a suit and a hoodie. Other automatic Chronographs on the market look like slab sided sky scrapers on your wrist. The Tudor is the biggest offender. Thats a beautiful watch from the top down, but take a peek from the side and tell me it looks good. It is not wearable by most wrists out there.

I was disappointed to continue to look at these offerings, stuck in mid-century styles, without any modernization or marketing to compete with the elite brands (as they should). First and foremost, a Cellini chronograph, steel model, is missing. Would that not sell out (as an example)? Or an elegant looking Cellini watch? They are really leaving a lot on the table.

So, here’s the thing - at 43mm case with an inter horn of 22m the piece is a phenomenal size. It really gives you the feel of an upsized gold Daytona on an oyster flex strap. Now this is the modern sizing that Rolex should be looking at. Or 42mm. Every time I’ve strapped on the real deal it looks really tiny and frankly feminine. I love these timepieces just because they are quirky and imperfect, and started life an underdog. Its the ugly duckling that grew up to become something greater and more beautiful than the sum of its parts. And at the same time it is tragic because to have one enlists the owner into the ranks of not just watch ownership, but membership into an asset class. There are risks and rewards to this, not the least involving violent removal if worn in the wrong environment. The true believers pay this price and find a way to be fulfilled with ownership. The ownership of the Daytona carries a price much higher than a financial one.
