Brilliant Daz👍😊. That’s probably the clearest and most meaningful explanation of KH I’ve ever listened to👏🥇. My system runs at at about 7.5 degrees and I was concerned it was too high but fish are healthy and active so not going to make any changes, will just keep monitoring. Thank you, much appreciated 👍🈲🐟😊

Great vid again mate. Im trying not to chase kh. Used to chase between 6-8kh when my pond naturally lays at 2-3 so i try to leave it be with regular checks. I think a good video for you to do next would be how you winterise your pond 1. Cover or no cover 2. Salt or no salt 3. Heat or no heat 4. Turns down pumps/air. Common winter queries. I know that you don't really change anything yourself but it would be good to see a vid like this 👍🐟

Hi Rich, I think thats a great idea. As you say, I don't change a thing but I can certainly talk about the options and why I do what I do.

Bacteria needs KH to actually build its structure. Sort of like a skeleton even though we know bacteria doesn't have a skeleton as such. That's why it needs to be watched very carefully when you add any new filter systems or media to your filters. You will get a drop in KH. And then all the problems that go along with that. Very well explained Darren.

Hi mate mine is running at 2 and ph is staple at 7.7 Has you no it’s a new pond and just stating up. It has a trickle in trickle out and my KH has never dropped since I started it up. So I decided to just leave it like you said unless my Ph started to drop to low. 👍
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 2 года назад
Hi Andrew, yeah 2 and 7.7 are spot on. If they level off at that when everything is mature and finds its own balance you will be in good shape. Probably wont know for sure until early next summer now but so far so good mate 👍👍

Hi, another simply exceptional video delivery from you. Your a proper inspiration to people putting their elbows in the pond / fish keeping hobby. I have a question.... When testing for KH, Once the 1st drop goes into the test tube and hopefully the water turns blue. When do you start counting the drops to determine the result once turned yellow. Do you include the 1st drop then count .... 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 ...... Or do you count 1x after the 1st drop that turns the water blue. ** My KH runs at ( 5x ) including the 1st drop to turn it blue ** The fish have been in the pond some 12yrs.... all happy no sickness etc, pH is at 7.5..... Looking forward to your next video... take care,
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi Год назад
Hello there mate and thank you, sorry for the delay, I'm struggling with messages at the moment. This is a question asked a lot. In my opinion you DO count the first drop. The titration uses the total number of drops needed so the first is definitely part of that. pH of 7.5 and a KH of 5 is pretty much bang on, it doesn't get any better than that mate

Good info as always. Did you previously say you run your trickle in direct from the tap as the ammount is small and the chlorine would gas off as it enters the pool. Thanks again.
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 2 года назад
Hi Mark, yes I trickle in straight from the tap. I've never had any measurable level of chlorine in my pond, even trickling in well over 100% a week.

Very Informative video but I will say I think you missed an important point about kh levels and that is , there are certain treatments out on the market that require a kh level of 5 and above , hopefully we never have to use them but I feel it’s worth noting 👍👍😀😀
@DazzleKoi

Hi mate, yes that's a good point indeed. I will talk about that in my health video when I get on to treatments 👍👍🍻👍👍

Hi mate, great video. I have 2 x 24 inch beads on my system each with 100 litres of k1 micro in. I don't have a trickle in at the moment but do a 15 % water change every week. My understanding is that a bead filter requires a KH level of between 6-7. This seems to prove true as my pond uses up KH very quickly and I have to add Bircarbonate of Soda regularly to keep this KH level. I guess a trickle in system might solve this (my tap water is KH2) if monitored properly or is it just that bead filters need the higher level of KH to perform optimally biologically? Chris
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 2 года назад
Hi Chris, I haven't heard of any particular filter system requiring more KH than another as essentially it is consumed by the bacteria so in theory, any filter would use the same amount as your bacteria colony would grow to the same size, to consume your ammonia level. I think the trickle in is a good place to start though. They are beneficial for many reasons. Once you get it up and running and its left consistent for a couple of weeks you can then have a look at what your natural KH level is and if you need to intervene. Consistency is key though so you can know exactly where you are starting from.

Great video as per. If I test my tap water 1 drop turns it blue one more drop turns it back yellow, so pretty much very low on kh . What would your advice be in this situation?
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 2 года назад
H Richard, you know your tap water isn't going to offer you much of a top up of KH so you need to monitor your pond and if you deem that you need to add to it to keep it in the correct range your only real option is to start adding small amounts of bi carb regularly until you work out what you need to add regularly and consistently to keep it safe.

Do you run oyster shells in your system or again what do you think of oyster shells thanks love the videos hello from Thailand have a great day
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi Год назад
Hi there, and thank you. I don't run oyster shells, no. My pH is naturally around 8 so I just leave it well alone. If you can avoid adding things it is best. What pH do you have in your pond when you leave it to nature?
@N0n4M3ist
@N0n4M3ist 2 года назад
Hi Daz, my pond pH fluctuates 8.8 - 8.0 day and night. Current kH is 3 drops. Have been using trickle in out and tap water is at 8.4 pH with 0 kH & gH. Will adding baking soda raise the pH even more?
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 2 года назад
Hi there, baking soda has a pH of around 8.3 so adding it wont take your pH above 8.3. You should be able to add baking soda and raise your KH if you wish, without having much impact on your pH.

Good morning! I use Sodium Bicarbonate to ensure my KH is acceptable/ideal. Separately, I use Potassium Bicarbonate for aquaponics and soil PH and KH, and much better than Sodium Bicarbonate for plants specifically. Although I haven't tried in my Koi pond and need to do research before even considering, what are your thoughts on Potassium Bicarbonate? I was concerned Potassium could react with Oxygen to create Potassium Oxide, so obviously not using it until I fully research.

Hi Daz, Love your videos and they are very informative but is it a good idea for me to stop the flow and close down my shower, thx Deelio koi Ian.
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 2 года назад
Hi Ian, no mate, I would always leave everything running all year round if you can. You may get some ice forming at the return which can sometimes lead to water ending up going over the side of the pond rather than back in but if you clear it regularly you should be fine 👍👍

Hi Darren, my kh is at 9 is that dangerous? Also had a high pH which I'm lowering currently and slowly.
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi Год назад
Hi Shona, what is your pH first thing in the morning and at dusk? This will tell you your natural pH range and if you have an issue. The two readings will be different. In 26 years I'm yet to see a pond that had pH that genuinely needed lowering so please verify your measurements before adding things to the water.

when you say 3 ..i take it that 3 drops?
@DazzleKoi

Hi mate, its 3 degrees of hardness. It may or may not correlate to drops, depending on which kit you use.

great vid why dont you have any plants in your pond thanks
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 2 года назад
Hi Eric and thank you. Its not really that kind of pond. I like natural ponds where people try to mimic nature but this is more akin to a fish tank where the environment needs to be spotlessly clean and almost sterile. Soil and bacteria etc that come with plants don't work in this type of pond.

@DazzleKoi

aghh sorry to here that. Was it pH that dropped? The reason I ask is that a drop in KH wont kill your fish on its own.

@DazzleKoi ye a little poorly described above. The ph had a drastic change due to my lack of buffering knolage. I was replying on my trickle in to provide buffering. I belive the tribute was our mains water suply had switched source (happens a couple times a year hear) the kh went from 5 to 2 and gh from 8 to 4 within 2 days. Combined with me using an algi floculant thst day I belive it just turned my water over reguarding the ph. Due to lack of buffering & being excessively soft water . I well and truly blame my self for how thst played out. If I had known better I would have not used a floculant with low kh water and I would have also put more time into checking my tap water peramitors weekly for any hardness changes.

Hi there, I think you are being harsh on yourself there. Not many would have prevented that I dont think. We all rely to some extent on our providers doing a good job of keeping things consistent. Sounds like a lot of things combined and the timing was bad. A 'perfect storm'.

Can you add too much KH? Can too much KH harm your koi or affect their color? Why is it that people have it in their head that KH needs to be above 2?
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 2 года назад
Hi Rolland, you would have to go extremely high to have a negative effect on health but colour can be affected by water chemistry. pH, hardness etc, different levels favour different colours, sumi, bene etc. I think that people just accept that if its higher they wont suffer a pH crash but in reality it doesnt always have to be so high.

So who should I listen to? you or him? 😎KH-1 TDS 65 recommends this water Mike Snaden ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Lkszp89VGVE.html

Hi mate, Mike is coming from a completely different level. That video is predominantly about RO and mimicking mud pond water chemistry. He is running on a knife edge and dealing with koi worth hundreds of thousands of pounds where the name of the game is realising every last drop of potential. If you contact him I can guarantee he wont advise you jump in and run your pond at 1 KH. Most people will recommend 5 or 6 KH plus. I'm saying you can go down lower if you learn how your system operates and you are vigilant. Nobody, Mike included, would advocate running at 1 unless you have the correct equipment and experience. I agree completely with him on the benefits of low KH but that video is misleading if you have taken from it that you should run your pond at 1 KH.
