“What is the National Aviation Heritage Area and Why Should I Care?”
SUMMARY: There are 62 National Heritage Areas across the United States and US Territories. Ohio has two. The National Aviation Heritage Area is a Congressionally designated 8-county region working with aviation heritage partners as an economic catalyst in the region. Learn the origins of the Heritage Area System in the National Park Service and hear what the National Aviation Heritage Area is doing in the Miami Valley including recent partnerships with the MCWDC.
PRESENTOR:
Mackensie Wittmer is the Executive Director of the National Aviation Heritage Alliance. The Alliance is the management entity of the National Aviation Heritage Area, one of 62 national heritage areas designated by Congress as having a cohesive, distinctive landscape of historic and cultural resources of national importance. Mrs. Wittmer works closely with the National Park Service, National Museum of the USAF, other aviation heritage organizations, and numerous informal partners to leverage cultural heritage as an economic catalyst in the region. She has served in her current role since August 2018 and has been with the organization since 2014. Mrs. Wittmer graduated from Miami University with a bachelor’s degree in history and political science and from Wright State University with a master’s degree in public history. In 2022, Governor DeWine appointed Mrs. Wittmer to the America250-Ohio Commission, a celebration of 250 years of the United States in 2026.
