Portal hypertension is a condition in which the pressure in your portal venous system is abnormally high. The portal vein is a large vein that connects the heart with the liver. Cirrhosis (liver scarring) is the most common cause of portal hypertension.
Intrinsic liver disease, blockage, or structural changes that result in higher portal venous flow or increased hepatic resistance can all induce portal hypertension.
