I have never felt so heard in my life before. The problem is, if you are not in a precarious position yourself, it's nigh impossible to empathize with it. You will hear them out and offer support, but you cannot shake the feeling their security is attainable to everyone. It's false, of course, but by the time you're in the position yourself, it's too late. To everyone in doubt, believe this man's description of the precariat. It is real and it is devastating - both personally and socially.

@@Coneman3 I can give an indirect testimony of how UBI could positively impact lives, especially of the poorest people. I'm from Brazil. Here, when an income program tied with children's school attendance got implemented for the poorest of the poor, you could hear the middle class and the elites openly complain. One of the biggest claims was that "now it's not easy to find workers to do menial tasks for small pay, because the poor became lazy, they don't want to work anymore", to which I always responded "it's not that they became lazy, it's that they became independent from your exploitation, pay them better and they'll surely work". Without draconian rent controls and a return of good quality social housing, greedy private landlords would simply snatch the extra basic income. If this factor was accounted for, basic income would be a good idea. Under the criminalized benefits system, people are being bundled into low skilled jobs to avoid sanctions. And they stay in these jobs rather than take the risk of trying for something more skilled, since if they fail, they will fall into the criminalized system again. I have to say that Guy Standing is a phenomenal communicator and needs to go into politics and replace Keir Starmer!

This may sound to simple but, all Nations should agree to simply create the necessary resources through the banking sectors where all nations would make adjustments in all national accounts to cover it for all it's citizens based off the current needs for food, clothing and shelter. Money is just a set of numbers to represent value - just make an adjustment worldwide. On employment and the unemployed, this gives people time to gain new skills or their could be 3 day work shifts adding more workers to work the other 3 - 4 day shift . This would boost all economies with the added needs of additional consumers in the marketplace allowing for added production and innovation.
@paneko1

The problem of impossibility of idea you presented is lying in unwillingness of those in power (modern economies, in which national currency is fiat money, established and created by government) to do so. Good schools everywhere would be the easiest task to start with.

Or just get rid of money and declare the earth common heritage. Develop a system in the mean time while we sort out how to do that, which keeps track of resource NEEDS and calls for the distribution of these resources equitably (not equally). We then engineer abundance and can grow our aspirations. This would of course take a long time and a restructuring of how we think about borders, one anther, waste, responsibility, efficiency, luxury and necessity. This economy is a resource based economy. It could be developed with appropriate fail-safes.

interesting discussion. Any predictions on when the "progressive" precariats will actually get represented or be able to make changes for the better? I read in one Dr Standing's articles about 7 or 8 years ago around 2013 that about 15% of the population is in the precariat. What is that figure now, and how does that/will that likely affect what is to come? So far it seems to be only the atavist part of the precariat that are making any changes to the political landscape. Considering the traditional Social Democrats parties such as Labour don't seem to appeal to the precariat, do you see any progressive parties or organizations that represent the interests of the precariat)?

OK, there is nothing new under the sun. Marx explained class struggle and class division years ago: It was Marx who had first discovered the great law of motion of history, the law according to which all historical struggles, whether they proceed in the political, religious, philosophical or some other ideological domain, are in fact only the more or less clear expression of struggles of social classes, and that the existence and thereby the collisions, too, between these classes are in turn conditioned by the degree of development of their economic position, by the mode of their production and of their exchange determined by it. This law, which has the same significance for history as the law of the transformation of energy has for natural science. Engels, Preface to The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte (1885) What's happening is that the world at large has entered a new epoch, a second gilded age that's occurring on a global level. ‘The longer you can look back, the farther you can look forward’.” -Winston Churchill Churchill is right and if you want to see how the future will shape up just read about the 1st gilded age in the United States. Mr. Standing keeps repeating the word "new" throughout his lecture , but history just repeats itself, there is nothing "new". Also, he plays to the notion of the "progress of mankind" as if the world can be improved upon and made to be just, fair, and equitable. This is a fallacy. Also, he claims that the ruling class is worried about how things are shaping up. Worried ? Are you kidding me ? The ruling class shapes and controls all aspects of society. Plus, the masses are just mindless herd animals that will instinctively follow the dictates of some outspoken leader and this will never change. Like I said, the world doesn't change, it only changes form.

I’ve tried to think about rating drivers since we all have stories of people cutting us off or riding our bumper. But I couldn’t get around the issue that the only ratings you would get are negative ones. The closest thing I cane up with was to count negative reviews and grade them based on time/consistency. I think we can make better @/platforms and better systems. The ratings system has to do with customer satisfaction. If you want return customers then you want well rated riders. However a lot of these platforms don't encourage ratings especially for food delivery. Most customers don't rate. So when you do get ratings you get dinged. We need to be fair to both sides of the equation: customers and riders! And it shouldn't just be the rider telling the customer "please rate me", the platform needs to do its part too. I personally think the rating system is unfair to riders and have considered scrapping it. Please understand that the workers are vulnerable to the customer's whims. However we do need to value customer ratings as well... let's re-think this one! World isn't fair just like in nature, fortunately humans are very good at adapting to their environment

If precariousness affects entire nations of people there are really two options for the cause. Either a) they just don't produce enough of worth to fulfil their citizens basic needs, e.g. due to poor natural resources or b) the profits are funnelled elsewhere. In the first case they could benefit from richer countries becoming less hostile to immigration, which only happens if the poorer people there feel secure in having their own needs fulfilled. In the second case they could benefit from having the power of the rich who likely are likely at the receiving end of those profits reduced.

The problem with the progressive precariat is that they can not produce ANY goods valuable for the other people, while they obviously need to consume goods produced by others. When you pay for something, you expect to recieve some concrete product/service. Nobody will pay you because you have finished some college or had a great marks at school. You can sell your skills as an employee or an enterprenuer. But precarists dont have one to sell. They could become a carpenter, plumber or fix cars, but that kind of life "doesn't fit their ambitions". So they are still in point, and we should not pay them for free, but should teach them some profession and send to work.
@Magnet977
@Magnet977 5 лет назад
The issue arises that no group has any interest in training the precariat or even acknowledging their existence because they want them for cheap, exploitable labor and as to use as a threat that can be used. The old truth that college was necessary for a good job transformed into a scam to make a few rich and get people in massive debt as a means to create this class for that very reason. As for the trades and other such jobs for retraining they still won't provide anywhere near the necessary income despite the massive amount of fake stories people try to sell about making lots of money as a plumber or an electrician. Like the college shuffle before it, it'll wind up being just another way for a few to make money off the desperate. The precariat are both the ones being tortured and the ones who have the greatest capacity to affect inevitable change that the world faces. The question becomes will they even care enough about the world to try and save it, or merely destroy it out of spite and rage.

8:50 “We need to fight for a basic income for every man, every woman, and every child in our society. It is affordable without a doubt. It is not going to do the things the critics say. Because we do want to improve our lives. So if you have a basic income you will not become lazy. We have done pilots in various countries. And people who have basic income work more not less. And when they work they’re more productive not less. A basic income encourages the good virtues of any decent human being. People who have basic security are more altruistic than others. They’re more tolerant of others. They feel more inclined to engage in society as a human being and as a citizen. It is something that brings out the good qualities of the human being. We need to move in that direction because without security and without building a system with everybody having security the inequalities and insecurities will increase the probability that someone like Donald Trump will win at some stage. Because too many people will be suffering from insecurity and losing the capacity to be rational. That is a real fear we should all have. But we want to create a better society. A basic income would promote security. It would also give us a greater sense of control over our time. We need a politics of time for the 21st Century. We need to enable people to feel in control of their time. To have a slow time movement. Where you indulge not just in your labor but in different forms of work: caring for your frail relatives, or your children, or your community. This sense of control of time is something that any good civilized society should want everybody to have.

I like the idea, though I disagree with some of the given justifications for it. (And I think there are some other good ones, unmentioned.) But some evidence needs to be offered, that it works. There was the mention of pilot programs. How did they work. Details, statistics. Outline the studies. For example, what gets people to do the undesirable jobs if we have a base income anyway? Who decides he'll go out and clean public toilets for fun? Is base income adjusted for number of children? If so, is there a limit to the number of allowed children? Also, it didn't work that well in China, Cube, the Soviet Union. How is this version different? In America, our founding fathers were rich, and they put checks in place to prevent the less wealthy majority from simply voting to liberate the rich of their property. These checks make Robyn Hood legislation... difficult. I think you need to invoke some of the concepts in and surrounding Bertram Russel's "In Defense of Leisure." You'll have to get the rich to expect to benefit from the arrangement. I think a plausible argument could be made. But I don't think you've made it. Those are hard questions, but I still think we should try it. Btw, how do I get in on one of the pilot programs?
@ShakinJamacian
@ShakinJamacian 7 лет назад
I believe looking up Standing's works on this topic should help illuminate the concern of pilot programs. He's had his hand in almost every major pilot program of the last 30 years. He's supervised the pilot Y Combinator is going in Oakland, California. For starters, I believe Standing wrote a book on the changes and outcomes of the pilots he oversaw in India, which went so swimmingly the government is entertaining making it national.

Links to programs and a ton more information can be seen here www.reddit.com/r/BasicIncome/wiki/index People clean streets for low salaries now because otherwise they won't have food to eat. If these jobs are still needed, their salaries would have to rise considerably, to what they are really worth, or be automated. Make the jobs more desirable - e.g higher salary, better conditions, and more people will want to do them for their own merit, not because they have to. Most UBI schemes talk about a smaller allowance for children rather than adults, but it's still an open subject. Basic Income was *never* done in China, Cuba or the Soviet Union. In these communist countries, you got specific things, not cash, and hardly keep your freedom. With Basic Income, you get a *cash* transfer and still keep private money. With this cash you can buy what *you* want, not what the country thinks you want.

Motivation, not being lazy, is not the critical issue here. The critical issue is competency. People can not be productive unless they are competent. Unfortunately about 10% of Americans are low enough in competency as to be unemployable in any line of work. Providing them with UBI will ensure an increase in their numbers and little else.

Debating socialism is a luxury brought to you courtesy of capitalism. Think about that. Redistributing wealth will not do a god damn thing for the average person. We need to think of ways to get people in a better position to generate their own wealth.

The whole point of a basic income is to get people in a better position to generate their own wealth. It’s hard to worry about a career when you’re already homeless, starving, no healthcare, etc.
@dopaminecloud

It is impossible to achieve this if you keep up a population growth. There simply mathematically cannot be good circumstances for all under perpetual growth. Don't have kids if you wish to start seeing improvement down the line or be quiet and lay in your bed of deprivation.

Learn how to spend less money then you earn. Don't fall into the trap that you 'need' stuff. Everything around us is designed with the goal to take our money. I never owned a car, instead I saved for 15 years and bought an apartment

@@Bldkkr I agree with several part of your respons. For example the systems design of consumtion and that society really can't aid a person who is irresponisble with his or hers money. But the situation of the precariate class is not about those aspects. For example, if i respond to the situation of you buying the apartment after years of responsible saving. What if you one day would lose your job, woulden't you lose your apartment aswell in the long run? Alot of people today don't have jobs that provide a stable income and foreseable future. They work in industries that don't provide security for the future. They can be replaced at a moments notice, they live in a constant state of insecurity and anxiety for the future. And it's not a quick fix problem since its built into the system wich they live in.
@BrickworksDK
@BrickworksDK 2 года назад
@@Bldkkr "Learn how to spend less money then you earn." Can't really argue with the sentiment behind that. But reality is somewhat different. When I moved to where I'm currently living, rent was about 1/4 of what I had available income, which I figured was well within my means even if I fell on hard times for a while. I haven't even lived here a decade, but the rent is slowly creping towards 1/3 of my available income. And I see no signs that this is ever going to be reversing. And it's not just rent that's increasing. Food has gone up as well. As have insurance, internet, and other expenses. And actually getting a house of my own has turned out to be a pipe dream. Even if negative interest rates and the current inflation weren't eating my meagre savings at a frightening rate, housing prices are going up way faster than I can put money aside. Point being, to put it bluntly, that you can do everything right and still fall behind.

If these new arrivals were as competent as they want us to believe they are then 71% of them would not be recieving social welfare payments.
