Keep in mind that the power of the presidency has significantly grown since George Washington was the country’s first president. Not because the Constitution has changed, but because presidents themselves have expanded their inherent powers. In particular, I’m looking at you, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson, and George W. Bush.
That all said, the president doesn’t control everything, man. So maybe, I don’t know, pay attention to OTHER PEOPLE running for public office this year?
So what did I leave out regarding presidential responsibilities? Also, I am planning on a follow-up to this video about what makes a GOOD president, according to the experts, and I’d like to hear your opinions about that. Ya know, because y’all are experts, too. Personally I think it’s their morals that make them a good president, if they can bring both parties together to make a difference in our lives. What also makes a good president is their strong commitment to their country. Hope that makes sense!!!

I think it’s the type of leadership shown especially in difficult situations. Look at Lincoln and FDR. They rose up when the US needed someone with their type of leadership most. And Washington basically set the standards of US president. That’s why I don’t think we have yet to truly have a 21st century president (I refereed it to as such as Washington was voted in the late 1700s aka 18th century, Lincoln mid to late 1800s aka 19th century, and FDR in early to mid 1900s aka 20th century) that can truly say they are among the greatest because as bad as things have been so far we have yet to hit the rock bottom like the American Civil War and 1940s Great Depression that draw out the type of leader needed to rise to the occasion.

I used to live in the USA but I now live in Canada. People here always blame Trudeau when the gas prices are high but then I talk to my family in the USA and the gas prices are high as well so I always find it stupid to blame the president or prime minister for that. While sometimes actions they take can affect the price of gas (especially for the american president), many time it is factors out of their control.

I feel that it isn't a case of the president having zero control of the economy, because with legislation the president can at least influence the economy, to an extent. I'm not really familiar with Van Buren, but when it came to Hoover, as was said in another Mr. Beat video he either did nothing or he passed legislation that made things far worse. But, it should be said that I'm not entirely familiar with issues of the economy. Mr. Beat, if you see this can you please explain it a bit more?

What makes a Good President? 1-knowing that he or she is NOT above the law. 2-the ability to reach out to someone who has a different point of view and try to find some sort of common ground..without coming off as an elitist OR an insult comic. Disagree without being disagreeable. 3-The ability to know how the Congress operates and use that to your advantage. This includes knowing the key leaders, parliamentary procedure AND knowing which committee handles certain legislation. POTUS can get the Cabinet Secretaries to serve as his/her liason to the chairs and ranking members of the committees.. A good President needs to be able situations, where his/her party is in control of the Congress or when there is divided government. 4-The ability to hire (and fire) people to do the job required. (Some cases do involve Senate confirmation in hiring.) This ability extends to hiring experts on certain subjects, such as Agriculture or Labor.. However, POTUS should not abdicate his/her authority over a certain part of the government. Also, a good President would feel comfortable having a subordinate "seizing the initative" on an issue (subject to Presidential oversight). 5-To have a loyal VP. Im thinking mainly in the mold of Walter Mondale and George H.W. Bush. 6-The ability to admit when a mistake was made AND to take personal accountability. 7-The ability to speak to the American People and the People of the World. This includes knowing that if POTUS speaks, he/she knows the subject AND he/she is speaking the truth. This extends to being able to handle a press conference and a one-on-one interview, on Fox, MSNBC or the local high school. This includes the ability to talk with people of all races and religions. 8-The ability to share credit for accomplishments, even if its from the opposition party. 9-The President needs to be a positive rolemodel. 10-The President has to be able to make decisions, which might not be popular. But its whats best for the country in the long run. For example, George W. Bush bailing out the Banks during the Great Recession. 11-To be capable of doing the duties of Conmander-in-Chief. 12-To be able to understand economics.

i agree! i think there will be a time he will get there. i'm hoping this is an ongoing theme of video he will put out and explain other government jobs. what i think could be an issue is these jobs are potentially not as clearly outlined in the constitution (maybe i'm wrong, it's been a while since government class)

It is interesting because the President was supposed to be a much less powerful figure. Mason, Franklin, and Madison all wanted to limit the powers of the presidency because it was too dangerous, especially in war time argued Madison, who was probably looking back at the failures of the Roman Republic where individuals accrued a lot of power by emergency. The only dissenting voice was of course Hamilton, who was vociferously opposed. As time went on, the office was given more and more powers and responsibilities. This was probably sensible, or at least sensible at first, because you saw reliable men like Washington, who famously despised one-man rule, enraging Madison with some of his decisions that Madison claimed were overstepping the position, and Jefferson, who was against a strong executive, but then in his presidency passed the Fifth Embargo Act where he gave the president the power to execute the whole thing. So essentially Jefferson and Washington realized that the position needed to be a little stronger, even though they were both opposed to a very strong executive, probably realizing it as they went along. Though I am sure they would be horrified by how much power the President has today.

This going to be a very busy election year and my recommendation to voters is to pay attention to federal, state, and local elections. The Presidency is important, but so it Congress, and state-level offices like Legislator, Secretary of State, and Governor. This is going to be a dynamic year with the a very real chance to shake things up on all levels of government.

Really great subject for a video and I have definitely had lots of occasion to think about this. Especially given what presidents in several other countries do. And especially given how often presidents in this country make media appearances that make people think that they do more than their already awesome responsibilities.

The French Constitution of 1958 is very flexible, with its articles 5 and 20 and the sharing of powers between the President and the Prime Minister. 2 totally different forms of government whether we are in a period of « cohabitation » or « concordance des majorités » (the President has a majority in the National Assembly). For the 1st cohabitation in 1986, many said that the Constitution was not adapted for this political situation and that François Mitterrand should resign… he didn’t and easily won re-election 2 years later against his Prime Minister Jacques Chirac !

Could you please make a video of all the things a president does not do, such as raise or lower the price of gas, milk, eggs, etc.? Also, include with that who or what is in control of whatever it is if the president is not. I am an independent in a red state and wowza there are some crazy theories on anything and everything. The bit that makes me chuckle the most is all the folks who shared a picture of the prices of things and said they were the lowest with Trump and to expect the price of everything to go up with Biden. I have not heard a peep out of them lately with the gas price at $2.65, but I'm sure I could find more than one old farmer type who would complain that somehow the gas was better priced before while I am happy to not pay $4 or $5 a gallon for it.

solid video mr beat, love to see it i think a good president tries to make sure everybody is represented and nobody is left behind, not just doing what's best for their party but more importantly ALL the people in the country they are leading. it also helps to be precise with their wording to ensure no confusion with their statements, because they will be heard by many for years to come.

Thanks for another great video, Mr. Beat. For me, a sign of a great President is to be fully aware of the History of the United States. You can't lead a group of people into the present and future without fully understanding where we've started and what we've gone through as a nation. Also, learning from past Presidents is a good way to understand the shoes that one has to fill for the role.

So glad to see a vid like this. It is so misunderstood. People think of them like a king who just directs the government to do this do that. It is pretty limited. Commander in chief and the ability to enter agreements with foreign states are the most wide ranging powers, but both of those also have checks and balances (eg congress must declare war and the senate must approve an agreement for it to become a binding treaty… and unless it is a self executing treaty there is an additional step for congress to make a treaty law domestically). Then there’s the ability to hire all the heads of the various departments and the Supreme Court justices but again there are checks everywhere with congressional approval. The founders very deliberately set this government up so that no one person could get things done very easily without support. The gridlock isn’t so much dysfunction as it is a feature of this very deliberate system.

I have quite a big interest in the British constitution and I can definitely see the inspiration for the President from the King. Obviously the prevalence of silly ideas like democracy have led to the King losing a lot of powers, but a lot of the "powers" (ceremonial things technically done on their authority) are quite similar to those of the President, and a lot of the powers the President has are similar to ones the King would've still had in the 1700s. Obviously the rest of the government is formatted very differently, but the President does seem like an elected king from the powers defined in the constitution.

Thanks for making this. I have seen alot of noisy comments around the internet in the last few years from people (or bots?), both Americans and foreigners, who seem to think that the office of the president is alot more powerful than it actually is. Some even seem to be under the impression that the prez has the ability to order civilans around like an absolute monarch. Some, especially foreigners, might get that inpression because the US militaty is so powerful and the commander in chief has deployed them almost eveywhere on the globe in the last eighty years. But the office has little direct effect at the domestic, local level. Even executive orders are limited to the actions of federal agencies and still must fall within the scope of the law. However, the president does have alot of soft power. In additon to leading their party, they are one of the few people who can command media attention at pretty much any time, for instance.

I believe that a president must possess at least three of six fundamental abilities and avoid three hindrances/negatives. These abilities include public speaking, critical thinking skills, experience in law and government, willingness to stand up to enemies (and allies if your friends become too extreme), admission of faults, and the ability to defend their beliefs with factual arguments while still being open to hearing the other side. On the other hand, the three negatives that a president shouldn't display are having a mental disorder or illness that hinders their ability to serve the country, being corrupt/seeking to make a substantial amount of money from the job, and selling their country out to their enemies. Although having all six abilities is unlikely to the point of improbability, I believe it is reasonable to expect at least three or four of them. However, any of the three negatives are too dangerous to be tolerated and are significant enough to argue for the impeachment of that president.

The President is also the nominal head of their political party, and having or not having a legislative majority matters quite a lot in how their presidency is rated. Clinton did not have a legislative majority for part of his two terms, and arguably his record was what he could get Gingrich to agree to, and vice versa.

I like the conclusion of "please look at who is running for local office" since it includes people from Congress to city/town assemblies. They make decisions from directing the POTUS to directing education to directing real estate developers in your area. It's like legislators are Boards of DIRECTORS, however incompletely democratic that is.

Responsibility for enforcement is a major power that has been exercised in _not_ enforcing acts of Congress or judgements of the Supreme Court. The ultimate recourse rests with the people, who can refuse immediately to cooperate with active executive malfeasance (and wield the delayed threat of voting out officers whose dereliction of duty consists in inaction).

Subscriber from New Zealand 🇳🇿 here, we currently have a 3 party coalition, with the deputy prime minister role being shared by the two smaller parties who made up the coalition. Our elections are 3 year terms. Question, do you think the US major parties would be more successful if they were allowed to team up with independent runners, allowing independents to run in states without the major party needing to campaign there (providing their loyalty and seat is essentially alleged with the major party it aligns with) ??
