Did you know that when 2 lb spray foam insulation is first installed it rates at an R value of 10 per inch?! But then it loses some of that value over the next month. In this video we explain what is happening and how to properly see what your installed Long Term Thermal Resistance Value (LTTR) will be.

I am just about ready to closed cell spray my top floor walls, dormers and roof with 2 inches of closed cell..after watching your videos. You have probably covered what ELSE would help prevent transferring the temperature OUTSIDE to the INSIDE. Some are advocating radiant barrier..aluminum bubble wrap under the foam. My big concern is transfer through the dimensional support lumber...2x6, etc. Would a thin layer of foam insulation boardbetween the drywall and the 2x6, etc help lower the transfer. I cant build a second wall with air space as some do. Thanks

4:00 You said freon. Freon is a brand name registered to duPont. The term is used broadly and can mean a lot of different things, kind of like the word Kleenex. The question is what is the actual chemical blowing agent in that purple foam and what is it's GWP?

Enjoying your videos. We have been spraying our houses for several years now. I live in Iowa and we typically apply 2" of closed cell to concrete basement walls and fully fill 2x6 stud cavities with open cell. By the way I sub out this process to an insulation contractor. My question is this, how critical is the thickness of the closed cell? My guy says an "average " of 2" . In some places it will be closer to 3" and other places it might be 3/4". Should I say something to him about this issue or is it not that critical? I appreciate your thoughts and the videos you are making.
@SprayJones
@SprayJones 3 года назад
If we are doing it at 2 inch closed cell will be 1.75" - 2.25". I have had customer try to get us to come back for even touching up that spec. If we have 3/4" and then 3" would be getting a phone call. Your installer needs to get better.

35 years as a residential building contractor. R-30 in a wall is fantastic in any zone of North America. I built many homes with a total value of R-22 in the walls and R-30 in the ceilings. In several homes I installed a radiant barrier under the decking and R-19 insulation in the ceiling joists, which gave an equivalent of R-52, according to the radiant barrier mfg. For an exposed floor (like a vacation A-frame cabin) R-30 in the floor is desired. Cost of foam vs fiberglass batts would be the major consideration. Some applications (like a dome home) with irregular surfaces/spaces would definitely be easier with a foam insulation. I did a job where we built a stick home inside a Quonset Hut with 2x6 framing. The walls got 5.5" of a latex-based foam. The soundproofing and insulation value was great.

@SprayJones

If not complicated. Everything with board stock relies on perfection to work. Any gap between the board and siding is where water can sit. Any gaps around the perimeter will let air in to sit inside. You won't know it is happening until there is a lot of damage. So this is the down side to this.

So educational. I want to renovate a home built 1980 in Dallas. Gut walls. Add a second row of 2x4 to make walls 2x8. I’d love to do all closed cell but may do flash/Bat. Brick is painted with 50 year elastomeric PSINT. It’s like rubber. I also want to fill the 1 inch cavity between brick and outer 2x4. Simply because brick cannot absorb water. I hate that the brick isn’t part of the insulation. It’s literally 4 inch of stone with a liquid vapor barrier outside also acting as PSINT. Would love to see a video on a remodel. Also considering putting the zip green board sheathing inside since I have brick outside. To completely cover studs so there are no thermal breaks. I know this is completely reversed engineered.

I find it hard to fathom that the freon could be completely dispersed and replaced by air. Is the freon pressurized inside the foam? If it is pressurized surely then it would simply lose the positive pressure which would not leave room for air to infiltrate since the pressures are now in balance? I find it much easier to understand wall performance as that figure more closely relates to overall value of heat input vs heat loss since it is based on time. It is sort of using thermal mass relationships or am I completely scrambled?

Unclear to me why as over time Freon leaks out and is replaced by oxygen (air) lowers R-value. Freon and air are both gasses, the fact that it's not Freon matters that much? Air is in fiberglass, Rockwool, etc. Sprayfoams huge R-value over those products is because no airflow happens in the product itself wisking away heat.
@SprayJones
@SprayJones 3 года назад
Not technically correct. The better insulating layer is created by the chlorine gas inside the freon. Over 40 years less chlorine has been allowed to be in the flourocarbon. Chlorine is very dense and inert so it takes the maximum amount of energy to get through it. Hence the better insulation. Oxygen is not inert and easy to transfer energy - this is why hot-air furnaces are used. This is just a small snap shot of what is really going on.
