What is The Tevis Cup? This is the popular name for The Western States Trail Ride. This takes trail riding to the next level and takes endurance riders and horses a lot of time to train and prepare for it.
This ride is annual Endurance Ride starting in 1955 and taking place every year since with the exception of 2020 due to the Covid Pandemic. The ride travels from Truckee, CA near Lake Tahoe to the Auburn CA Fairgrounds. The rugged trail is 100 miles through the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
It is taking place this year, July 24 2021 and I will be there crewing for my friend, Sue Basham. Sue's son, Paul will crew along with me. This will be my 5th time crewing for Sue!
This ride marks Sue's 10th Tevis Cup ride! She will win her Decade Buckle if she and her phenom Arabian Mare, Kismet Cognac (KC) get a completion! Sue will be in charge of her ride and Paul and I will do everything in our power to help her have a successful Tevis ride and completion!
There are 18 checkpoints where the horses are checked by a Veterinarian to insure the health and well being of the horses during the ride. Pulse/respiration, hydration, gut sounds, body condtion, signs of lameness, girth sores, other abrasions, are all looked at by the vets. There are strict compliance guidlelines that riders must follow if the vet pulls a horse for any reason.
Many 50, 75 and 100 miles endurance rides take place throughout the US and many are sanctioned by the AERC, the American Endurance Ride Conference. The Tevis Cup is a sanctioned AERC ride.
