The historic center of Delft is actually a large open-air museum. You just have to visit it once in your life on a nice sunny day. The East Gate. This church dates from the year 1246 and is still in use as a church. The scientist Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, the navigators Piet Hein and Maarten Tromp, and the world-famous painter Johannes Vermeer, among others, are buried in the church. The church tower is so crooked because it was built half on a sand ridge and half on a piece of filled-in moat. During the construction of the tower in 1325, the tower already started to lean. There is a kink in the tower because they have built right on a crooked base. Every Saturday there is a large antiques market around the 'Oude Kerk'. It is held from April to October. Delft is a touristic place for many international visitors. In the first place for the world famous 'Delft's Blauw' pottery and porcelain. The old town hall, built around the 800 year old belfry, is an example of typical Dutch Renaissance style. Opposite the town hall is the 'Nieuwe Kerk' with the second highest church tower in the Netherlands, which can be climbed. Of course this church is famous for the tomb of 'Willem van Oranje', father of the fatherland and the crypt of the royal house. Hugo de Groot, founder of international law and the law of the sea, is also buried here. A statue of him stands in front of the entrance to the church. The 'Beestenmarkt' is highly recommended for a snack and a drink on the terraces between the trees. The Doelenplein also invites you for a drink on one of the terraces. Of course Museum Prinsenhof should not be missed during your visit to Delft. Every Dutchman must have visited the museum about 'Willem van Oranje' at some point in his life.
