Being moral = being religious If you read history, morality was not known to tribes before they had prophets come to them. Morality was introduced by the introduction of religion.

Rafic Dalati Correction: Being religious = Being moral. It's not necessarily the case the other way around (being moral doesn't always mean you have to be a religious person). You don't need to be religious to be a good person. People learn morality from things other than religion (family virtues, life experience, friends, etc.) And personally, I find that doing good deeds just for the good feeling and self satisfaction is more respectable than doing it for reward (heaven), or avoiding punishment (hell). I don't find that very selfless because in the end, you're intention is to help yourself only. Think about it: Would you still be a good person, even if there was no reward for it (or no punishment for not being a good person)?

Someone who was born and raised in the ghetto doesn't experience life the way you or i would (assuming we live in quality homes, went to a good school, good parents, access to food and water etc). They may have loose, weak or no connection with family, their lifestyle may not be that great (living in the streets, selling drugs, witnessing crime, etc) Religion has been here for a LONG time. Islam teaches us that before Jesus and Muhammad (Peace be upon them both) there were other prophets such as Abraham, Noor, Adam, Yusuf + Many more. I do agree that we've been created (by God/Allah) with a sense of what is right and wrong but (Wether you believe in a religion or not) you MUST ATLEAST agree that religion has made quite an impact on our morality. People have been following it from as far as tens of thousands+ years ago.

AR Mohamed To your comments about doing good deeds, the way you just described, only to benefit yourself, those are qualities of satan. The best intention when doing a good deed is to do it just to please Allah, and to not expect things in return from someone for your good actions. If you're only doing good things to make yourself feel satisfied then thats a bad intention too, because that kind of intention leads you to have a big ego and pride, and pride puts people in horrible situations.
