@@hyperrealhank indeed. Also, I would add the last episode of Revolutionary Left Radio podcast that was released yesterday. It talks about Sweden and the nordic countries in general, how they took part in imperialism, and how they still do it, dispelling myths over their “friendly” portrayal by the media. It’s great for socdems who still argue that that model is a solution for the US.

Unlike his wonderful videos on history, I've always found Bastani's ideas on global communism (as articulated in Novara Media content, etc) to be lacking in the political department, as noted by the reviewers too. He speaks of achieving communism like our societies are comprised of just workers and technology interacting with one another and having a smooth sailing towards an inevitable outcome, and there's no private capital that is successfully preventing that outcome. I can't see how it's likely that communism will be achieved without a struggle that wins that future from the capital - especially in the context of the impending climate crisis.
@archief1783
@archief1783 11 месяцев назад
He’s never said that though, quite the opposite. He often talks about how various crises in the future (demographic ageing, climate change etc) combined with extremely powerful artificial intelligence will disrupt the capitalist model, possibly to destruction. That’s not smooth sailing at all. The reason he stays vague about this issue is because it’s nearly pointless trying to predict exactly the ways in which this will come about. That’s not the same as saying the transition will be smooth sailing, but rather that it’s gonna be rough and unpredictable.
@SvalbardSleeperDistrict
@SvalbardSleeperDistrict 11 месяцев назад
@@archief1783 Well it's one thing to say it will be challenging, and to point to AI and other elements like that, and another to talk about the obstacles caused by political actors within class war, which I never hear him mention in the context of future struggles. And that was my main point in my original comment too.

In the political directions section, starting around 59:40 there is discussion on Bastani's claim that "socialism could not have built communism in the past" and the underlying premise of this assertion by Bastani is that, only through capitalism is the efficiency and cost-reduction of commodities in production brought to near-zero. From what I understand from when I attempted to understand what I read in Capital that Marxian thought is that Capitalism is a post-feudal, economic reformation , and not the end-all-be-all of increases in efficiency. This doesn't make sense to me because I could have sworn that Marx criticized capitalism at least several times on how it has deficiencies in production as a form of political-economy. Even if Bastani isn't making an orthodox Marxian argument here, it doesn't seem correct that Capitalism is the only phase of economic organization that would yield gains in efficiency of production. Obviously progression of efficiency of production occurred prior to Capitalism, and I don't see any solid argument as to how Capitalism is a necessary condition for raising the efficiency of production. One could argue that post-capitalist nations of the 20th and 21st centuries achieved heightened production of certain commodities over capitalist nations, but I don't see this as a necessary point, plus the semantics of whether or not a post-capitalist country has ever existed would be a whole tangential argument by itself. A dictatorship of the proletariat would have so many reasons to pursue gains in the efficiency of production and the benefits of this efficiency is so obvious as a net-positive goal to pursue that it couldn't possibly be an isolated occurrence under Capitalism. Gains in efficiency certainly have occurred under capitalist modes of production, but capitalism itself isn't the only organization of the economy where gains can occur. Anyways, if I'm wrong or missing the mark I do hope that someone will correct me. Thanks to the channel for all the work y'all put into these videos! I stopped the video at 1:00:04 to write this comment while the question was fresh on my mind and if this question is answered in the video I'll delete this comment.

it's probably more likely bastani thought that despite socialisms successes the capitalist propaganda will be too strong to overcome, or that despite socialisms ability to grow it won't be able against external. i think that is wrong there are probably ways socialism could've been achieved without automation. but here is one simple thing to keep in mind; *people will mostly only rebel against the system if it is unable to provide a minimum quality of life* and so this is revolutions won't happen in imperial core countries until automation comes along. people are satisfied with how things are, and don't actively search up alternatives.

Enjoyed this commentary a lot. I think the point that has to be emphasized about the "political direction" section is that the book was written in the heady days when Corbyn was still leader of the UK Labour party, and pretty many of the workable, incremental solutions he describes was the policy of a would-be Corbyn lead government, or at least alive ideas in those circles. So I think he was trying to connect his ideas with some then-current political action that a reader could get involved in immediately. Shortly after the book was released, of course, that Corbyn-lead government failed to win the necessary electoral battle and the right of the party has since purged itself of any of these progressive ideas. The section reads very differently in a "post-2019 world" where these things aren't on the cards electorally. To be honest I think this makes some of the questions he doesn't address or glosses over (mainly the conflict with capital and finance) all the more urgent.

@@themarxistproject Communism is characterized as the mode of production, following capitalism's qualitative change, wherein the means of production are publicly owned and privatization is abolished. Due to the lack of private property, there is no state, there are no classes, and there is no money. The reason the meaning is confused is because socialist movements called themselves communist because communism was the goal, even though they had definitely not achieved it yet. The USSR was socialist, and it was called communist because that was the end goal. Cases like those, and people forgetting or not knowing the principles of DiaMat, are where the confusion comes from.

Can you guys please research & advocate for full intellectual property (IP) abolition? This is the most important activist aim for working class people! A just economy (& most leftist projects) has very little chance without first abolishing IP. IP is the most severe & oppressive tool of the rich & powerful. Please see the work of Stephan Kinsella, Michele Boldrin, & David K. Levine. These are the best experts on intellectual property in the world. Everyone who cares about seriously improving things for humanity needs to know what IP abolition is about.
@user-wl2xl5hm7k
@user-wl2xl5hm7k 2 года назад
IP laws make no sense from either left or right politics. The “property” in intellectual property is a false term used for propaganda purposes. Intellectual property is not property in any sense. It’s monopoly. IP actually stifles innovation & creativity. IP also is the main component of cultural control, propaganda, & advertising. And IP seriously screws up our economy & stacks it for the rich & powerful more than any other tool (especially IP with digital tech & the internet). IP abolition is the most important aim to liberate artists, programmers, inventors, etc. & make them all better off financially.

I don't believe automation is a great threat to jobs outside of manufacturing. Autonomous vehicles only work in controlled conditions, and the kind of machine learning necessary to enable them to replace human operators would be SkyNet level AI. Look for Alphabet, Tesla et al to push for new wireless guidance infrastructure projects as a shortcut; creating even more tightly controlled conditions would be the only way that current autonomous vehicle technology could succeed. And vote them down when they show up on your states' ballot initiatives, because they're not bringing us any alternate employment opportunities.

Automating statecraft is basically gifting autocracy to a person who designs the AI. Fair and square. All communist ideas like these tend to despotism, be it "dictatorship of proletariat" or disctatorship of AI
@NeoZondix
@NeoZondix 2 года назад
Only if individual government institutions are automated in an absolutely correct way (which cannot be done without capitalism, prove me wrong if you can), would it look like a functional system eventually. But the AI would never be an independent entity. It would always have a creator and a support team, who would basically be the only government in the system

@@NeoZondix yes my point is that capitalists pushing the technology would need government intervention and probably government money to make it work reliably. Think about the complexity of aircraft guidance systems; it would require something similar on EVERY roadway in the country.

Technology creating class division isn't even dialectical, in fact it is quite the opposite. Class divisions happened under capitalism before mass mechanization so his insistence to the contrary make pretty much the entire "argument" awkward. Bro never even criticizes the notion of not going to space being a lie told by the neoliberal capitalists in order to create a closed sky. I mean he could have at least pointed out how the exploitation of the global south has grounded us to the planet unnecessarily. This is basically the pinnacle of technocratic solutionism not communism. Promising that our technocratic overlords will agree to end capitalism, for some reason an issue Bustani never actually addresses, and build this space faring society is not communism. I love space. I am a communist. But they are not compatible as revolutionary ideals. This "book" reads like a freshman overachiever wrote ten ten times more than the teacher asked for a research paper. I mean I LOVE space enthusiasm, I really, really do (I've been a huge fan of Star Trek since I was a kid) but this really is incoherent nonsense no something "to be read". I mean fine, let's build a space faring communism. I've been told my whole life that that political project has been dead in the water because nobody is going to fight in the streets to try and make the government build spacecraft. That still seems to be true. So it's not useful as a political project to win people over to the leftist causes, and it doesn't address the contradictions of capitalism...... So what is useful about this? Once again, incoherent nonsense not something "to be read".
