For a long time, I thought that having the VR button switched on on my Nikon lenses was going to help me get sharper photos all the time. I mean, it's designed to compensate for camera shake so why wouldn't it help to sharpen my shots right?! I'm so glad that I did a little research and found out what VR is and when to use it.
In this video, I explore what VR stands for, how it works, and when you should be using it. This is also a bit of a Nikon Vibration Reduction Review, as I take some test shots and show you the results.
If you use vibration reduction in the way I explain in this video, you should get the most out of it. Remember to only switch it on in low light situations with stationary subjects and you should get great results.

Handheld, low light, and mostly stationary objects - perfect! I should've watched this video years ago. Fortunately, I've just always kept VR turned off because it never seemed to produce good results (because I always used it in the wrong circumstances). Thank you for the clarification!

Thanks for a good straight forward explanation of VR on Nikon lenses. Just got a dx 18-55mm, but now think my VR is broken. As it says it's off in photo info whilst reviewing photos. But I'm not too bothered as you feel keeping it off a lot of the time anyway is better. And it was cheap and the auto focus seems to be working fine. Not really sure on how the manual focus functions, but do everything else on manual mode. Many thanks. ☺

Thank you so much. I am really not sure about VR for video. My best answer, off the top of my head without doing any research would be no. I say this because VR is designed to help eliminate you capture images at slower shutter speeds hand-held. As video is continual frames being captured multiple times per second (24, 25, 30, etc), I would say that VR would only hinder video. Also, VR helps with stationary subjects, not moving ones. These are just my personal views. Maybe do some Googling and let me know what you find out?

Hello Barry ! I am sort of a rookie with photography, and I wanted to ask if the VR would be helpful if you're doing portrait photography or automotive photography with no movement in them?? I want the pictures to be as sharp as can be.

Hey Juan. Thanks for your question. I would suggest using VR for Automotive photography absolutely, as it would be very helpful, especially if the cars are stationary. It may also help for portrait photography if your subject is still. As long as you are hand-holding the camera in both cases, not using a tripod. 🙂

Hi, so for still photo one needs tk shoot in manual mode to enjoy VR benefits right? Does VR help stabilise footage when shooting video? (without having to tweak shutter speed). Thank you

You do not have to be in manual mode to use VR, you can use it in any mode. VR will help to steady your videos slightly also.

If your photos are really blurry, it won't be VR causing that. You want to look at shutter speeds and/or focusing to fix that. 🙂

You could try it but you would most likely need faster shutter speeds anyway to freeze the movement of the artists. Higher ISOs, wide apertures, and faster shutter speeds are what you need for concerts.

As you cant turn VR off on the Nikon D7100 is the Nikon AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR still a good lens to use

VR is a feature of the lens, not the camera. The AF-P 70-300mm would be perfect for the 7100.
