Have you ever wondered what Waldorf education is? Are you considering Waldorf but aren't sure if it's right for your child?
In this episode of Sunday with Sarah, I sum up five unique aspects of Waldorf education and philosophy. Trying to define Waldorf "in a nutshell" is no easy task, but hopefully this video will give you a sense of what the philosophy is all about!
If you like this video, please give us a thumbs up and subscribe to our channel. As always, I'm here to answer your questions regarding education and parenting so drop me a line at sundaywithsarah@bellalunatoys.com and I'll do my best to answer in a future video.

So lovely to see you back! I love your Sundays with Sarah and re watch often. My son is almost grown now - almost 16, and we've just come to the end of waldorf inspired home education in the UK. He's off to college in September. I regret very much that we didn't home educate from the start and that I didn't know about Waldorf when he was infant age. I wanted to say that what you said about the teacher staying with the children all through school really chimed with me; we found that each year my son was in school, the teachers would start the year almost disbelieving that my son needed extra help (dyslexia, hypermobility) and by the time they'd got to know him and realised yes, he did need help, he was off to the next year and a new teacher, and that whole process started again. Hence, eventually, we gave up and home educated! I hope you'll post more Sundays with Sarah soon :-)

Thank you, Jess! My plan is start posting a new video again every week now. My grown son Harper, a filmmaker, has been really helpful in getting the series going again. It's so hard as our children approach adulthood, to not have regrets about things we wish we'd done differently, isn't it? But we have to constantly remind ourselves that we did the best we could with the information we had at the time. I often say that Waldorf teachers may not be experts in every subject, but over eight years, they become an expert on the children in their class.

Your son is obviously a credit to you! And yes - you have summed it up perfectly, that's all children really need isn't it, adults who know them and love them and they'll do the rest in their own time! x

Hi! My son is almost 13 and he has Dyslexia, Dyscalculia and Dysgraphia. He is also Dyspraxic. I have been homeschooling him for four years now after he consistently fell behind year after year in public school. We haven't found anything that works for him yet and he is at like a 3rd grade math level. Is it too late to begin this teaching method with him? I have an 11 month old and 15 month old that I want to begin the process with soon too.

I'm a Waldorf kid, having attended the Marburg Germany school. You did a great job explaining it, as I've always struggled to help my American friends to understand what it was about. You actually made me understand where some parts of me were made, and why I am so lucky to have had such a great educational experience. 35 years later, most all my class is still in close contact. Virtually all of us have led successful, fulfilling lives.

I would have LOVED this style of education as a child. I am the type of person who is passionate about all art: theatre, music, drawing, dance, painting, knitting, cross stitch, sewing- all of it! Traditional schooling cultivated crippling OCD for me and has made natural creativity difficult, as I am so terrified of failure.

Barely saw this video so sorry for such a late reply lol but yes to all of this. Regular education systems here in America don't support creative outlets very much and when they do have anything it's rarely actually enjoyable unless you get lucky with a passionate teacher.

Hey, 16-year-old girl from China here. My parents transferred me to a Waldorf kindergarten very early on because I was struggling emotionally in traditional kindergarten (Waldorf kindergarten was a lot more expensive so that's probably why we didn't go in the first place). My Waldorf journey ended when I was 7 when I went on to study in a very academically focused traditional Chinese school. I then transferred to an American curriculum school, and now I am in a British curriculum school. But it is safe to say my years in Waldorf really surely helped me grow emotionally and to live, for lack of a better word, happily with my thoughts. I remember it was a place filled with love and support. Academically, it is hard to assess the skills I picked up along the way. This is just my personal experience, but hope this helps.

As Sarah ma'am says, What makes Waldorf school different..? 1. Non-academic preschool 2. Story telling 3. Integrated arts 4. Class teacher looping 5. No textbooks. children make (illustrate) their own books.

When I was a teenager I really wanted to study in a Waldorf school. My parents didn’t understand. When I had my first child I started studying Waldorf and looking for a good school for her. My husband didn’t want her to go to a Waldorf. He was afraid of her future, about her not being incorporate to the “business world”. 🙄 Now we are in Florida, my daughter has 6 yo, I don’t like the schools here and I know much more about Waldorf (R. Steiner). Have 2 other boys, 3 yo and 9 months. Crazy tô find a Waldorf school. There is none here. I’m even ready to convince my husband with all my strength that kids must go through this path. SARAH, what is your suggestion ? Im so happy that I found you! 🌷

My daughter is almost 2 and we live in a small apartment, and that likely won't change any time soon. I feel like I'm always struggling to find a good rhythm and organization for different toys and activities. As I’m learning more about the Waldorf school system, my 5th grade class was selected to loop to 6th grade and that was public school. A lot of concepts I’m seeing in this system were used in the public school system that I attend back in the mid to late 90’s. And oddly enough, there was and still is a Waldorf school across the street of the public primary elementary school I attended.

I went to a Steiner school in Sydney Australia, I remember in the mornings we would stand at our desks with our hands across our chest and stand silently for a minute or two, i think to calm everyone down and get ready to learn. But i remember that they used to have like a poem or something that we would say during these minutes, do you know what that poem or saying would be? When I learned about Waldorf kids having the same teacher for all those years, wherever I read about it pointed out that it's about prioritizing the relationships with classmates and the teacher over mastering a certain grade's material. In a regular model, even if they move a teacher grades, the idea is that the teacher is assigned to a grade then given students. In Waldorf, the teacher is assigned the students then passes through the grades one by one. Then the teacher decides if they want to do another round at that school or move to a new place and new Waldorf school and do a round there...

That seems incredibly cheap to me. In NYC, the Waldorf school is almost $40,000 - $51,000 a year. In Long Island, NY, Waldorf is $25,000-$30,000. I now live in TN, and we have here one of the lowest costs of living in the USA. Our private school, which is not strictly Waldorf, but does borrow aspects of it, is $13,500. If it’s 13k here, I can’t fathom where you live where it’s cheaper than that!?

I want to take this time, however, to warn any parent who may be considering sending their children, that AWSNA, who owns the rights to the name Waldorf and therefore has great influence, is proactively engaged in promoting anti-racist curriculums in the respective schools. If you are not familiar with the term "anti-racist", it may seem harmless enough, but when you study the way the term is used by its advocates, what you find is that the term itself invokes divisiveness and is, dare I say, racist! that is to say, it promotes the idea that white people are the problem. This couples nicely nicely with the Neo-Marxist concepts of white male dominated capitalist society being the cause of all our problems. If you agree with those concepts you will probably like the way many Waldorf Schools today our now trending. If you believe in the power of the individual human being, however, and in human freedom, you may be disappointed. but If you are considering, I would still check it out at your respective school because it ALL depends on the teacher!

I wish I went to a Waldorf school 😞. I would have been so much a better person. They didn’t exist where and when I went to school and even if I could have it is very expensive as they are private.

Rudolph Steiner's belief system is so eccentric, (ego-centric!) so unsupported by evidence, so manifestly bizarre, that rational skeptics are bound to consider it delusional. I have a younger family member who went to a Waldorf school. It ruined said member in many ways.

Sure, and this is coming form your background in higher education or because these schools say so. You should actually look at the statistics coming from the university’s. Also take in to consideration those kids you say go off and excel In these fields had outside tutors to supplement their education.

Really, the most important thing for a teacher in dealing with pre-reading age children is the correct use of air quotes. Without that the century old teaching methodology of Waldorf education crumbles. Glad I read this comment and avoided sending my four kids through Waldorf, with my oldest graduating with honors and landing a dream job at Google. Oh, wait, no I did send my kids through Waldorf school, and it was inspiring and wonderful. Haters gonna hate.

You were going for witty but ended up strawmanning at best or being too daft to understand what I actually said at worst. "...with my oldest graduating with honors and landing a dream job at Google." Glad your kid landed his dream tech job by attending a school that treats technology as an evil hindrance on intelligence. As long as your kid didn't land this job despite the shitty school you send them to, and/or you aren't some pathologic liar, lying about your successful kid. "Oh, wait, no I did send my kids through Waldorf school, and it was inspiring and wonderful." Unfortunately for your children, it's your legal right to send your kids to whatever ridiculous excuse for a school you see fit. I don't really care. "Hater's gonna hate." Your methods and thus philosophy is opposite of the Prussia based educational model ref: (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HvHDcSY_yfo.html) - great news. "The Prussian education system (not a Wikipedia link), still used to this day in most countries worldwide, originated in the early 18th century as a way to instill absolute obedience and uniformity in the students under the guise of education. What the students wanted and thought was irrelevant-the Prussian education system was there to teach them minimal literacy and indoctrinate them into believing in the infallibility of the supreme authority (Prussian King Fredrick William I at the time). The end result was a useful generic worker, readily replaceable and dispensable."

The public school institutions in America and abroad have been infiltrated by intelligence agencies desperate to recruit the brightest minds of the future. In the book, Spy Schools: How the CIA, FBI and Foreign Intelligence Secretly Exploit America’s Universities, investigative journalist Daniel Golden details the exploitative relationship between higher education and intelligence services, both foreign and domestic. Golden examines various case studies illustrating how the Central Intelligence Agency and Federal Bureau of Investigation use higher education to their advantage." source: irasocol.medium.com/the-prussian-model-and-the-failure-of-personal-ethics-83cf46602c92

The only thing I don't like about Waldorf is it's not cruelty free. Many of the traditional materials involve animal products such as beeswax, wool, leather and silk. I love the philosophy and just swap out materials for cheaper vegan versions.
