In this video I answer 3 questions: 1. How do I know I'd like this genre? 2. What is Weird Fiction and where does it come from? 3. Are there beginner-friendly recommendations? #weirdfiction #booktube #sff
Great video and topic! I adore this category. And The Mummy with so many men easy on the eyes. 😂 Funny enough - I stumbled across your channel when I was searching for books like Piranesi. I fell in love with Susanna Clarkes writing this year. A few classic weird writings I found this year are The Three Imposters by Arthur Machen and The Willows by Algernon Blackwood - both really good and atmospheric. These old ones get very mixed reviews so Im being more selective about what I read.
Haha! So true. And like how gorgeous is Rachel Weisz in that movie too. She was my inspo to become a librarian. I keep hearing great things about PIranesi, I should give it a go soon. Machen and Blackwood are absolute classics in the weird fiction genre. Being selective is so important. The moment I realized time = my life ....I became a lot more selective of what I read. Glad you enjoyed the video. Glad to have you here
This was so interesting! I hadn't heard of Weird Fiction as a genre, but learned from you that I am a fan of it "accidentally" and want to now read more with that in mind! I appreciated you giving the history as well as recommendations ☺️
This is a dense video and very interesting! I'm not so sure if I am among those who will love weird fiction, though I do really enjoy M.E. Braddon and Shirley Jackson so that might be a window in. What I know I do love is your deep dives / 'fixations' into all sorts of non-mainstream things, and I'm very happy to go there with you, almost whatever it might be 😊
There used to be an editor who pushed forward quite a few "fantasy" books related to Tolkien's success, and through him I met Lord Dunsany (Dun-SANE-y, according to this editor) and I found him well worth reading. Enjoyable writing, exotic and quite disturbing at times. And fun!
I'm glad you mentioned the pronounciation because it's driving me nuts! I've listened to audiobooks and watched lectures and I've seen the pronounciation of dun-sane-ee and dun-sun-e an equal amount of times confusing me even more.... I decided to pronounce it the same way I would have read it before being disoriented.
i found with lovecraft i liked the premise to most of his stories but found the payoff or execution lacking. i have a collection of his short stories and wanted to love them, ill have to give him another shot. should also definitely check out some of the modern authors you mentioned
I think with Lovecraft each story is a world of its own in some way, but kthe more time you spend with each story and side by side, the lore of the place goes (kind of like MCU?-- weird comparison I know). No pressure! It's okay if he's not for you! There's other weird fiction out there!
