Around the world, the capitalist establishment is increasingly obsessed with the so-called ‘Culture War’, with conservative journalists and politicians scaremongering about the ‘woke agenda’, while liberals drape rainbow flags on war and austerity and call it ‘liberation’. How can communists cut through this reactionary nonsense and get to the heart of the issues facing us today?
To answer this question, this week’s episode of Spectre of Communism Podcast welcomes Yola Kipcak, a leading member of Der Funke, the Austrian section of the Revolutionary Communist International. Yola explains why communists oppose the toxic division sown by identity politics, and instead fight for a class-based approach to fighting for the liberation of humanity.

13:41 I think you’d be better off pointing out and explaining how concepts of identity, cultural communities and artistic productions, and social groups are penetrated, almost “colonized” if you will, and then commodified by the forces of capitalism and thus rendered NOT emancipatory concepts, or cultural institutions or social groups but instead have their organic social relations transformed to satisfy the interests of the capitalist ruling class with the aim of marketing, selling, and profiting from these things. Like all things commodified by capitalism they cease to be what they once were and instead become capitalist zombified versions of their former selves. So feminism becomes ċ|feminism| for example, and the once powerful emancipatory aims of the project and inner social relations of the members and the means by which the movement reproduced itself are diverted and transformed to suit the needs of capitalist ruling class and their incessant pursuit of profit … and here’s the important part … to include the exploitation of working people inherent to capitalism by its very nature. Participating in the liberal culture war pursuit of social justice only further increases the economic exploitation of the working class due to the process of commodification, which is becoming increasingly rapid and profound due to today’s internet and social media technologies! Economic class consciousness is the key to re-taking control of emancipation for social and cultural identities via their common foundations in today’s capitalist societies’ working class! I suggest rather than sounding so aggrieved yourselves and angry at those who believe in these “woke” and “politically correct” ideologies and the associated identity politics’ ability to achieve a future just society maybe instead focus on the way these admirable emancipatory “woke” movements when they are not associated with a class conscious and Marxist anti-capitalist revolutionary politics, now, especially over the past couple of decades, dominated as they have been by the ideology of the neoliberal capitalist ruling class, only end up as commodified centers of profit generation for the capitalist ruling class. And explain the commodification process and the commodity fetish to the woke liberals out there who whole heartedly believe there’s justice in what they’re doing and not just culture war division accompanied by the construction of capitalist PRODUCTS out of their identities and cultural artistitic expressions and social group relations. PRODUCTS which are now rapidly and effectively commodified by the internet and social media so that they no longer serve the emancipatory aims they were created to serve or maintain the knowledge of a culture for its people, but instead just subtly (or not so subtly) change them so that the ideas have changed, the people have changed, the values and interests of the new members have changed, and most importantly the main purpose of the movement now also significantly includes the generation of profits for the capitalist ruling class AND the recreation of the class hierarchy, relations and means of wealth and power distribution of the existing economic ruling class. Whatever revolutionary egalitarian energy that was once contained within the identity or cultural movement will be removed during the commodification process. This is the real reason to worked up about identity politics and wokeism as a Marxist in our current highly consumerist Internet social media connected age. Tell the comrades to be class conscious first, and at the same time explain how culture war identity politics makes the rich ruling class richer while turning their idealist culture based emancipatory politics into just another new means for the economic ruling class to reacreate their capitalist system of wealth generation and hierarchical wealth distribution. There can be no social justice without economic justice and no economic justice without economic class consciousness and without economic revolution. And no thus no justice without economic revolutionary politics.

completely agree, i’m glad this convo is had but the way it’s done is not it and misses a lot of historic context. “said oppression only exists bc of capitalism” isn’t a very good critique either bc a lot of these things will in fact not be eliminated with capitalism. misogyny is a massive one

@@LPempty How do you propose to eliminate misogyny?
@smalbeaste
@smalbeaste 6 дней назад
@@LPempty Systematic oppression has not always existed, it is upheld by class society in the last analysis. The need for the ruling class to divide and conquer is the root cause of all systematic oppression. The fact that we fight oppression, shows us it is not a natural or eternal thing - but it is forced upon us by the ruling class. Capitalism could not exist without racism, misogyny (the bourgeois family), oppression of lgbtq, oppression of nationalities, minorities etc. Oppression will not dissappear as soon as you crush capitalism, yes, and different forms of oppression appear in different stages of class society and are very different. But they have the same root cause. Womens oppression is the oldest, and first appeared at the same time as private property, the state and class society thousands of years ago. Anthropological and archeological evidence proves that hunter gatherer societies did not have systematic oppression, least of all womens oppression. Systematic racism appeared during the birth of capitalism, as a need to dehumanize the colonized people around the world, and legitimize slavery. But if socialism would replace capitalism worldwide, it would not be a class society, and it would eliminate the root cause of ALL oppression - because that society would not have any need to divide and oppress. You also would eliminate the need for having classes at all, since there are no exploiters and exploited. When there is no longer any need, you would in a couple generations have a communist society, where all structures and scars from the previous class society would be in the past. In a communist society, there would not be any oppression, but instead true liberation for all humanity.

Have you read Deleuze & Guattari's "Anti-Oedipus"? It deals (with excessive Freudian language, fashionable back in those days) with the dialectics of (corrupting, mafioso, decoding, "schizo") Capitalism vs the cultural and institutional heritage of the pre-Capitalist (landownerist, slaveist-feudalist, warlordist, patriarchal) regime, described as "paranoid" primarily. They argue that the latter polarity is ultimately powerless but that it's certainly part of a dialectical pendulum within a Capitalism that can't offer real solutions and can only decode everything via mercantile corruption producing a "moral vacuum". They don't touch on the role of the proletariat (even if Guattari was definitely a Marxist) but what happens when the old regime's institutions and values are degraded and dumped into the trash been?, what remains or what emerges? IMO it is an echo of what was behind all that walordist-patriarchal regime: primitive communist, the not really erased genetic legacy of all our prehistoric evolution as hunter-gatherers or even early farmers demanding things like social justice (communism ultimately), freedom and truth. The latter two are also recycled by Capitalism (democracy, science) but deformed and corrupted into unacceptable fakes, what Capitalism can't really concede ever is on the central issue of property, and thus can't manipulate communism as such.
