That this seems unusual is a testament of how few people have served in the military. Everyone knows everyone else's salary because it's visible on your sleeve or collar. It also shows that fairness - even in the largest org. - works by having a max. ratiio from the lowest to the highest of 10x. (Highest General makes only 10x the lowest private.)

I see pros and cons to this. I mean like you said, it helps you value yourself to your peers, but I'm not sure I'd want the general public knowing my salary. People treat you differently and expectations change when they know your financial situation. Not to mention it opens up bigger potential liabilities (people making more will probably be more likely to be targeted for fraud, to be robbed, etc.). Think this might be better if it was just data published internally instead of publicly.

It shouldn't be, but this is why so many people in america are poor, there are people out there that havent made a buck over $10 an hour at their job their whole life that are wealthier than people who have made 60k a year for the past 2 decades. We have an extremely childish education of what wealth is.

@Wendel Bolide Have you tried alternative solutions to your housing problem? Like househacking or trying to find a home with a separate living space you could rent out? Or if your single renting a room and saving money for a down payment for this. Do you have a significant amount of debt causing financial stress?
@zacht9805
@zacht9805 5 лет назад
@Wendel Bolide 2 options 1. Go to school avoid going into any debt and do a side hustle to pay rent and living expenses. I would definitely keep renting the space your in if it's the cheapest you can get. Build your credit a bit while doing this so you'll have a good credit history even if you have to start off with a secured card and just spend a few bucks a month on it and pay it completely off every month 2. Get a full time job, establish credit history, keep a side hustle and save up as much money as you can. After this buy a property that you could rent out part of it even if it's not a duplex just something that will take a significant chunk out of the mortgage. Build your wealth and eventually buy a 2nd home rent out the first house and do this as many times as you can. Invest your extra money in a roth account and always live below your means. If you do all of this successfully you will be on a path few people in this country are on financial freedom and the freedom to not be tied down by a traditional job. Wealth is all about building assets and keeping liabilities as low as possible (debt, cars, loans, etc)

@@kotyayv I'm not sure exactly which way OP meant this but the way I read it, there are two interpretations: 1. If you are an employee of a labor union (like myself) all salary information gets reported to the DOL. Which is then available for FOIA requests. Which then ends up on union-busting websites so they can try to show how overpaid union staffers are. You can find me here: www.unionfacts.com/local/employees/509111/SEIU/1199/ 2. If you are a member of a union, you are likely on a wage scale. Which means if someone knows your job title and seniority, they can easily look up your pay in the contract.

Races and Genders are types of classes. A class is a broad group society designates for you based on real or imagined features which determines how you will be treated and what is expected of you. @@ooohspookyghost8400 I'm aware, but all forms of class have these features in common and have similar consequences in the work place (e.g. disparity in salaries. variable probability of being. ceteris paribus, hired or promoted). Also, different forms of class have an effect on one another. Being part of one type of class (race) can have an effect on your wealth and thus your economic class (although it would be more accurate to call it your decision making class). So it may be worthwhile to mention these commonalities, because people often fail to see the similarities between these types, and thus fail to properly define the problem. If one realizes that all of these civil conflicts (Gender conflict, racial conflict, immigrant vs native, economic conflict) are really all forms of class conflict, one may be able to find transferable solutions for each of these kinds of conflict.

No, the real reason pay isnt transparent is because capitalism benefits from it being that way. You have to know what number you are in a capitalist society. If you dont understand how to or arent motivated to navigate a capitalist society, your pay will always be the minimum default. This is just one more example where people benefit when they organize against capitalism.

Another problem with payroll in America, is that employees are asked to exceed their job description but aren't paid extra to do so. I don’t think putting your wage in your bio or something is the same as pay transparency. While the latter is about to enabling workers to be aware of the fairness of their earnings and to avoid or spot possible discrimination, the prior is sort of including your monetary status to your social image/identity, which can be very problematic.

I like the 2nd guys idea the most. The whole point of this is to have transparency to make sure you are receiving a salary that matches your work effort. He does this by allowing the person to compare their wages to the average WITHOUT anyone’s name. Yes it’s great to go to boss and say I think you’re being unfair but it’s also bad when we criticize a person for their pay. We all know people in the work place can get really angry over salary comparisons. For this reason I will never be for full transparency just because it is a safety risk. If people want to tell others their salary then fine, but don’t force them to.
