Thanks for this. I just purchased a 2014 crosstrek Xv with only 50,000 miles. This gave me a really good gauge on what to expect with its lifespan. It helps that I also drive 40+ miles a day for work, and I live in the western part of PA 😂

Low mileage may not be a good thing: my 2014 have very low mileage because I mostly only drive short distance on local streets. My car has been mostly trouble free. The right front struct went bad making clunking noise and was replaced under warranty. I only change oils and filter when the maintenance light comes on. I have only needed to replace tires, batteries. My car does light up all the yellow error lights on the dash. Reading the error code would show a few error codes. The clear the errors and restart the car and all errors are clear. When all errors light up, the only real problem is the hybrid battery indicator on the front lcd display show empty. Clearing the error codes restart the car and all back to normal. This would happen once a month.

Bought a 2015 hybrid 3 months ago with 200k kilometers. Last owner took amazing care of it, and so will I. Seems like they had the start/stop battery replaced by a subaru dealer along with wheel bearings. Glad i dont have to deal with those issues for the time being. Id never pay full price for one of these but considering i snagged it for 12 grand im very happy with it. My own commute gets me around 5.6 litres per 100k (42mpg) per tank. Hope its been smooth sailing since you made this video.

We're a shop in Colorado that has worked on many of these. Stay away from the 2014-16 Crosstrek Hybrids. If you want a Subaru from this era, just buy a regular one. Subaru's older Hybrid system is not reliable, especially when compared to Toyota Hybrids. Why do you think used RAV4 Hybrids sell for a lot more than used Crosstrek Hybrids?

Have the same car. Same exact issues at 40,000ish thousand miles. Had to replace the wheel bearings, axles. Then got the rotten egg smell, check hybrid system, and had to replace all my batteries. Already at 54,000 miles and the start/stop quit working. Not a very high functioning car maybe compared to a Toyota but a good car nonetheless. I use it for rideshare so the plan is to drive it into the ground.

I own a 2013 Subaru Legacy. It now has almost 130,000 miles. For the first 119,000 miles nothing went wrong. Then the master brake cylinder failed ($500). At 122,000 we lost the rear wheel bearing (a known Subaru failing) which was another $500. At the same time the front McPherson struts went (another $1200). Fortunately, now at 129,800 nothing else has gone wrong at this point. Still, it is a pretty good reliable car because once you hit 120,000 the rubber seals start going on engines and transmissions. This has happened with every car I have owned (Toyota, Honda, GM, and Subaru). I think the first oil seal, around the oil cooler, will need replacing which will cost me another $500. It is just regular maintenance you need as a car ages, nothing too major. However the Subaru battery is bought from Toyota as this is the first generation hybrid system. Makes it more expensive to fix.
@DannyDrives
@DannyDrives 2 года назад
Yeah 100k has seemed to be the marker for things to go wrong on Subarus.
@madacan
@madacan Год назад
Interesting about the rubber seals. For me, no rubber seals have EVER gone bad on any of my Honda and Toyota cars, and I usually buy them at 60-90K miles and then drive them over 200K miles (I've bought a few new ones too). There's a few issues here and there like a timing chain tensioner and starter in an old Corolla that was over 220K miles, and also a power steering module at 140K miles in a 2013 Honda Accord (replaced with junkyard unit). I've recently moved to a hilly location in a place with a wintry climate and am looking for a Subaru, but I'm not wanting the problems that appear to come with them at 100K+ miles.

Appreciate your article and post. I’m considering my first hybrid purchase (2021 Crosstrek). Is there any financial benefits worth mentioning (tax, fuel savings)?
@DannyDrives
@DannyDrives 3 года назад
I will say that the hybrid mentioned in the video was discontinued and then Subaru brought it back in a plug in hybrid version (this one is not plug in). No tax savings as it isn't a full on green vehicle, it is as green as a car is a performance car by adding a sport button. Fuel savings, this got a mpg or two over the standard one, but the best part was I might misquote the amount off the top of my head but the hybrid system added 20 hp more and 40 lb-ft of torque over standard.
@CheapSushi
@CheapSushi 17 дней назад
It's so hard to find info on how the Hybrid electric motors aid with initial acceleration and torque. Every video and even the manuals are so vague about it. I want to buy one just to mess with it, especially now that there's a turbo kit for them. I don't care about the Hybrids usage for fuel efficiency. But I'm interested in it for how the electric motor aids the gas engine and wheels; especially before the gas engine gets into peak power. I just want to do something different and fun. I have a 2014 Premium Crosstrek from the beginning with just minor issues that I've put 70,000 miles on. Only thing that really bothers me is no eyesight for my model and later gen eyesights are good. But I want to have another one to test some weird ideas on. So many other vehicles have big communities around them but rare to see a hybrid having fun too. If I can find a used one cheap enough, I'm gonna see if I can get 2019 and put the AVO turbo kit on it.

@@DannyDrives Danny, do you notice a difference in take off / acceleration when you go into Sport mode? From reading, the 2nd gen hybrid has two motors, one to help charge the battery and the 2nd is for traction, the traction motor has an output of 118 hp (120 PS; 88 kW) and 149 lb⋅ft (202 N⋅m; 21 kg⋅m). The manual states that putting the car in SI-DRIVE Sport (S) Mode delivers more power faster. I wonder if it's obvious or not in the Hybrid. I also found someone who did a teardown video of the hybrid's mechanics/engine/motor and the eCVT is different from the regular CVT in that it doesn't have the chain-like belt; so it seems stronger, more reliable and longer lasting since has something less to wear down. It's super interesting how it engages. Said to be based of the Toyota Prius (2nd gen). 1st gen was something more unique to Subaru.

a bad bearing and another bad bearing due to the boot rotting away.. at over 100k. I don't think older cars are better, you've just been lucky. The hybrid version of the XV/crosstrek is not worth it, only very minimal fuel economy gains out on the open highway fuel cycle (0.6lrs/100kms) $6000 more and the fuel tank is 15 litres less so you get less range per tank on a hybrid than a NA 2.0 non hybrid engine.

I am possibly moving to Northern Ontario in the Autumn and need something a little more rugged than my current Toyota Prius C. The prime candidate I am looking at is a 2015 XV Hybrid with about 67,000 miles on it. It sounds like you have had a fairly positive experience with yours. Thanks for the info, with that said I will stay with my 2013 Prius V. Any recommendation for an AWD hybrid?

At this point, I just am against hybrids. I don't want to recommend you any hybrid. Under warranty none of my problems matter, but after 30k miles, its all your problem.

@@DannyDrives Now that's funny! Thanks for the honest eval (of the car that is). I am trying to decide whether to skip the hybrid or not. I would be looking at a 2022 model. It sounds like I should just stay with the gasoline version.
