My favorite gift I ever received was a bell that a student made with a bolt, nut, string, and a small bowl. Many of the parents worked two or three jobs, and this 5th grader made the effort to find pieces and make it for me. It's been 25 years, and I still have it.

this is an old episode but I just wanted to say that the best thing a teacher has done for us during the holidays was during 5th grade my teacher and his wife decorated these clear ornaments with beads and tinsel and personalized them by putting our names on the outside… Currently in high school but man I still have it and decorate my tree with it; that was the first time I had ever had like a handmade gift and I will never forget it

So glad I found your podcast this year. I was in a wreck this year and had to take Lyft rides for while to work. one of my Lyft ride drivers was listening an episode. My favorite holiday at school memory as a kid was my 6th grade teacher gave us each gifts which included two pencils with our names engraved on them. I have a very ususual 1st name, so I could never find my name preprinted on knicknacks, gas station key chains, etc. I also don't think I understood yet that you could just order stuff with your name on it. I LOOOVED them and refused to sharpen them, and just kept them as a treasure instead. Now I work in elementary schools and my favorite gifts from students include a jar of homemade loose-leaf herbal tea mix and a teeny (like thumbnail sized) glass jar with a cork. I love it just because it is so tiny!

My absolute, ABSOLUTE favorite gift to get are funny holiday greeting cards. I always save these and while I do have a gigantic box in storage of them, I still will never throw one away. My absolute favorite one was from when I was a swim coach and one kid's parents (who worked for a Museum) gave me a card with a Stegosaurus skeleton on it, decorated with holiday lights and a santa hat that said "STEG-THE-HALLs". That has been on my fridge for YEARS

I used to fight people over Santa being real right up to like 10 or 11. I SWORE I remembered seeing Santa fly away after he visited us one Christmas. Turns out it was the neighbor stepping in for Santa, but to this day I still remember being convinced we’d seen him fly away 😂

I feel Gabe with the middle schoolers. They leave the most RANDOM things in my classroom that I find at the end of every class, and it's like ewwww! The Starbucks is so common amongst my students, but it is SO appreciated cuz ya know, caffeine.

I find it funny that not only do Lauran and I both live in the same state, but my family does the same thing for Christmas. My mom makes Egg Casseroles (Egg Bake). One cheese, one with ham. And we also have Cinnamon Rolls plus the Christmas Eve Dinner. I always thought we did it and it was like this weird thing to do until now.

@@lexio4395 they're very close in what they are, although I'm pretty sure (at least from my mom's recipe) Egg Casserole has bread in it as well as the eggs. Quiche and Fritatas are basically the same as far as I know

Students are always amazed to find that we teachers like some of the music they like. I would play "Metallica," "AC/DC," and "Bon Jovi" playlists during group work time as I worked the room. The one that really got them is that I love "Gorillaz". It was always a way I could sort of bond with them in a different way as it made a teacher seem...more human? to them.

This year my parents got me something. My family is on the low side of the middle class, my dad got me a guitar and amp. I was so surprised and happy I threw up.🥹 I told him to take it back and it was to much, eventually I excepted it and calmed down😭😭🥹🥹🥹😭

These guys are hilarious. I've always had a hard time with teachers. As long as they liked me, I never had an issue. As soon as they didn't like me, my life became hell at home and at school because then I would be placed under their microscope. Not an exaggeration just fyi.

One year I got a $100 gift card to the mall and a $50 gift card for a restaurant from a family. I quit teaching in December of 2018 due to stress. I always appreciated anything. It never failed though that the most difficult kids were the children who didn't even give a card. Merry Christmas or whatever you celebrate.
