I au paired in Rome last September without knowing a WORD of Italian. I was shit scared but also found it totally liberating just walking around not understanding everyone's conversations!!! You'll have an amazing time, people are friendly and helpful and you'll learn bits and pieces of the language along the way!!!! xxx

I know how you feel, two years ago, when I was 15, I moved from Berlin, Germany to England for a year without my parents. I didn't know anybody there and just regarded it as an adventure and opportunity to grow. It turned out to be the best year of my life, even though the beginning was really rough. Keep going and no matter what happens during your stay, it's part of the experience. Lots of love from Berlin! ❤️

The thing about being in Europe, is you have to just dive into the culture and lifestyle of which ever country you're in. Start learning common phrases, learn what certains sign posts mean, or learn a coffee shop order in German, just little things like that. They appreciate people trying, and will engage with you more and help you more when they see the effort you are going to, to "fit in". I hope things pick up for you soon. You can have such a wonderful time if you just throw yourself into it. Life is all about learning OXOX

You got to just get on the train and go. I'm sure that one person will be able to point you in the right direction and if not maybe you end up in some backend town in Europe and lets be honest. That would also probably be an incredible vlog.

Gosh I wish I could have watched your videos (this in particular) 4 years ago. I am from Germany and have been to Canada as an Au Pair and totally got overwhelmed with the new impressions and my thoughts and anxiety even though I never ever struggled with that before. I was always so confident with everything. The family was amazing and I had everything I could wish for but I ended up leaving earlier than anticipated and on sort of a bitter note. I just couldn't handle myself. Up to this day I wish I could go back and change something about it. Make the most of it, you got it right girl these feelings are natural and you just gotta roll with it :)

you will get used to everything, trust me! me, as a european going abroad in another country, i had a major cultural shock when i first arrived. everything was so different, everyone was speaking in a language that was not my own, everything looked so different from what i was used to. but after a week or so, it was like i have never been anywhere else. just soak it in and enjoy every minute of your experience, it'll be great!

Feelings with Bri is sweet. I fully and totally understand how strange it must feel in a strange new place but the sweet, warm, fun and sunny Southern Cali will still be there and so is Hawaii and all your friends. Honestly, I was a bit surprised of you leaving it since you seemed to fit in there so perfectly well but yes, just think of this new adventure as one big learning experience. You also have an advantage of speaking english as most people understand it and almost everywhere in the world there is signs posted also in english wherever you go. The first thing I always do when travelling to a new place is getting one VERY big & VERY detailed map to put on the wall to look at all the time to get more comfortable with the surroundings and other countries and cities around you. Then put marks on it how long a train ride takes to go to a certain destination. That way I always know where in the world I am and it is also a feeling of control.

I watched you before I moved to Germany 4+ years later I’m still here, I was an au pair for 6 months, and it’s so true everything you’re saying, so many emotions, I only had anxiety once I was there, mostly fear, but it went away and now I live alone here, and solo travel.

Briana, you NEED to download Duolingo onto your phone. It makes learning new languages SO EASY, trust me. I've used it for a long time to learn/brush up on Spanish, and will be using it to also learn German and whatever else I feel like! (There are so many languages on that app, it's ridiculous)! I think it would make you a lot more confident there, at least in the language aspect of things. I hope you get more comfortable over time 💫

Don't be afraid to start small! That will build up your confidence in traveling. Travel to other cities in Germany by train and by bus. Check out meetup.com in other cities and just decide to go for a weekend or some weekdays and check out those meetups. Also there's soooo many aupair groups on facebook. Your family may know other family's that have aupairs in your cities and the aupairs friends I made are still some of my closest friends today. The part about why did you leave--Honestly this is such a valuable piece of growing up. I used to have a super wide friend group as well until I left home on my first exchange. I don't regret it at all. The connections you make across borders and cultures will be invaluable. Sometimes you only realize this after you leave this experience.. Also if you have a good relationship with the family don't be afraid to connect to the parents. They know you're young and this is your first time and you can definitely talk to them about things or for advice. It always made me connection closer and feel like I was apart of the family. Lastly German will be so important! Are you going to take courses at the local VHS? I was an Aupair in Potsdam for 10 months and am actually moving to Tubingen for university next year! I've been living abroad since I graduated high school in 2013, so feel free to message me if you ever just have something you want or need to talk about. It's not easy but it's worth it!

Nawww Bri, I feel kinda sorry for you! As a German I experienced the loveliness and kindness of the australians, americans and canadians many many times and every time I come back to Germany I notice how rude/shy the Germans are. Not everyone - for sure - but most of them are. They just need more time to get comfortable around you and open up a little :) The guy from the ice cream parlor for example...people here are not used to bloggers and vloggers, and I can definitely tell, because I was a vlogger myself for several years. Hope you acclimate soon, if you want to get in touch just send me a mail. I have many friends in Paris and I can speak all the languages. So if you ever look for a fun travel mate, I'd love to!! (No I'm not a strange stalker or anything, just someone who tires so hard to proof that Germans can be cool too haha)

I'm moving to Europe in March and watching where you're saying you're scared and how can you jump on a train and go to Paris... is how I'm sure I'm going to feel once I get there too. Also helps me put into perspective of how my family and some friends parents have immigrated to the states without knowing anyone or the language.

The thing next to your door with which you roll down the blinds is 'bendable' so that you can have it like this shape to roll it up or down and secure it as a stick (shape: straight). As a result it won't bother you anymore when you're opening or closing the window
