great diplomat, if only world leaders were as pragmatic as he envisions. Unfortunately, it only takes a 1 or 2 world powers to tip the scale. Global problems like climate change need international collaboration. Sad to see a backwards paradigm shift back towards protectionism and nationalism (a state construct)

The GDP paradox with destroying the environment was powerful.
@solarisengineering15
@solarisengineering15 3 года назад
Yeah, he does make a point there. I think people really need to take a forecasted approach to GDP. Investors already use methods determining whether an investment is good by forecasting future returns and putting them into prospective with the minimum return on an investment. The problem is, there are certain factors that aren't being considered, like the costs of environmental damage. Governments creating economic policy should include the costs of climate change and environmental damaged in assessing the return on investment for economic policy. There is real math behind this that people could use to make real decisions right now by asking climate scientists to give an estimate of the damages due to climate change and including them in calculations for return on investment for economic policy. I bet some nations are doing this already, but more really should.

That's because the monetary systems need to go. A resource-Based Economy should be finally implemented. The idea has been waiting for the last 70 years. Monetary economics is not a science. It is pseudoscience. It is monetary astrology. Regardless of how fancy the economist attempt to make it look like to fool the ignorant population. To fool that is a science.

@Jonessa Smith Frankly anyone with experience in PR should expect an UN official to dodge certain questions, (though this is not to accuse him of any wrong doing so). The matter of fact was many of the questions are obvious enough to not warrant an explicit answer, and rather is a question of how much accusatory power the UN is willing to demonstrate. They are neither 'low tier' or 'garbage' and the only one questioning reality is you.
@saadudin3758
@saadudin3758 3 года назад
The biggest problem is the security council in it's current form. The five permanent members have never been voted to be permanent members, they just decided so themselves without consideration of almost 200 other nations in this world. Additionally they have the right to deny any ruling, which has been accepted in the general assembly, that doesn't fit their national agenda und the UN can't do anything about it. I don't know how this is democratic in any way. Secondly the UN doesn't have enough power or leverage on the governments of the big nations in this world. Even if 150 country's voted for a resolution which would mean a disadvantage for one of the bigger countries and, which would be completely unimaginable, the security council agreed on it, the UN itself would not be able to push any consequences, that would be something the countries did on their own. Thirdly the UN relies on the payments of its members and is therefore almost incapable of sanctioning it's members
@saadudin3758
@saadudin3758 3 года назад
@Adam I know, but in my opinion it is quite funny how countries like the US are the first ones to bring democracy to other countries which may not even want it but on the other hand keep themselves in a completely undemocratic position when it is about global politics and in their favour
@ClockCutter
@ClockCutter 3 года назад
The permanent members of the Security Council are the major powers at the end of WW2. Of course they weren't going to give the rest of the world any real power over their actions. That would be stupid. And, the UN was never set up to be "democratic". It was never set up to be a sovereign government, the legitimacy of which would require some level of "democratic" support. So, it's hard to understand your whining.

that would require the concensus of all party nation states particularly gloal powers, but considering how much self-vested and egotistical global powers are, solving the issue of HRVs around the world seems a distant and ideal goal. Remember that this man alone is not the UN, UN is a conglomerate of those 133 member countries, and finding a common ground to solve a particular issue would be a miracle, since all countries have their own philosophies of foreign policy, and their own merits and demerits to figure out, which affronts them from taking a steadfast, assertive decision. FYI for the people in the comment sections. The UN is not designed nor meant to be an executive body, its primary purpose is to provide a platforms in which countries can and HAVE to talk, discuss and connect. If not for the UN communication between the US and USSR for instance would have been much more troublesome and it is partially the reason why from the 80's onward both sides could make certain amends. This is not saying that they fix the world but they provide something needed which otherwise would not exist. It is easy to only see failures while not noticing the day to day succeses which do not make headlines.

@@LucGendrot US is one of the member states and Guterres is a politician. It is not diplomatic or wise for him to snub the United States in order to satisfy that interviewer. He needs to be able to work together with ALL of the member states. the UN would become truly ineffective if the S-G had offended any nation and all of its allies.

This video touches on why it’s difficult for the UN to make changes, and that’s true, but you also have to see how the establishment of the UN has also created institutions that many might not have though of in the beginning of the 20th century, such as the WHO-eradication of smallpox, food and famine relief, globalization, and multilateralism to an extent. Of course the UN isn’t perfect because, like what the Realism through in international relations expresses, the international system is anarchy with no international authority over states and their interests. You can see this pretty well with Syria for example.

Let's not skip the fact that the UN intentionally screwed up the meridian election rule and skipped on Eastern Europe candidates for the UN Secretary and chose this bloke
