Chanda Ladines I was born on Oahu too but raised in Waianae and 40yrs later im still here also...I totally agree with u this video definitely summed it up perfectly ;) I love it here the best place on earth!!!!!
A Romer Waikiki is mostly where the tourist are and that's why I think theres a lot of ABC Stores there, cause honestly ive lived here in Hawaii my whole life {Which is 40yrs lol} and ive never seen an ABC Store other than in Waikiki....Lol
Iray Z well it is a store mostly for tourists so the airport would be another perfect place for that...Lol I must be blind or something cause wen I flew off island I never took notice of ABC Stores at the airport, dam that's bad....Lmao I see other places but never did take notice of it now definitely this Island Girl is gonna head there for souvenirs for my family who lives in the mainland the next time I ever fly out, which will probably be awhile....Lol thanks for telling me Iray Z now I know ;)
Vicky Smith Born and raised Papakolea. Ohana on every island. Dads company folded 10 yrs ago so we moved to Henderson NV. I still luv the 808. Miss tracks so much. Walls is where I met my gf. We will be back cuz we surf 🏄♀️ Vegas only pool slide surf. Sorry about da abc. Us locos don’t shop dea.
I'm actually really glad you mentioned the homelessness and treatment of indigenous Hawaiian folk. that's important but didn't change how beautiful this all looked. made me want to go back!
funny how white liberal women can talk about injustices toward the native people( 100% bullshit) but can't talk about racism towards white people (100% real)
+Kinnish umm ok... There may be some racism to white people I guess? I'm confused as to how but I'm sure there have been instances of micro-aggressions or mistreatment during wartime; however, none of this alleged 'racism' towards white people can compare to what has been done to native people. Holy shit - the Apartheid in Africa, slavery, the countless times colonial settlers pillaged, murdered, and raped indigenous people, etc. The list of awful things done to native goes on and on and on. Native people have been treated like dirt throughout history and into today; sadly there are very racist people today who treat those with a different skin color like shit.
What does Apartheid have to do with Hawaii? It sounds like you are lumping all dark-skinned people together, whether Native Hawaiian or African (perhaps Kinnish is doing the same). Native Hawaiians are treated so much better than anyone else in Hawaii, except wealthy people. They basically get free land, they have two islands that non-natives can't even set foot on, they get jobs way easier especially in the service industry, and the authorities generally let them break traffic laws (like driving drunk and running someone over on the beach) and environmental laws (like harassing endangered marine mammals) with no consequence. Caucasians are not treated very well unless they have money or look like they do. A lot of fellow African Americans have told me the same thing about experiencing discrimination although I never really felt it myself and most of those that have said this to me seemed like they may have brought aggression instead of aloha and expected it to work. It does not. Ironically, aloha sometimes backfires on those Caucasians that live it the most. Hippies get it the worst. This was my experience living there. Have you ever lived in Hawaii? It doesn't seem like you have, but if so then maybe you should consider asking some Hawaii-born and local caucasians what they think.
The Democrat party is full of hypocrites and shysters, endorsed by the chinese. Just look at San Francisco, Chinese buying up everything, pushing locals out. Anywhere thats ran by Democrats, its sold to chinese.
Alexander Those rich chinese are skyrocketing affordability in canada too, they kept telling the people it’s good to have them around but I’m not seeing anything getting better meanwhile the housing prices are getting ridiculously high the residents can’t afford it.
ALWAYS BEEN THAT WAY....!!!!! ..THE RICH HAVE ALWAYS RUN HAWAII BUTTTTTT IN A GOOD WAY........ THEY KEEP CHAOS FROM THE PARASITES THAT HAVE ALWAYS SCAMMED HAWAII...YOUR ELECTED OFFICIAL...."HERO..NO"... IS A UNION PARASITE THAT PANDERES TO THE UNION LABOR SCAMS OF THE AFLCIO!!!! EVERY HOTEL EVERY WAITER MUST...MUST BE WITH THE CORRUPT AFLCIO!!!!! TOTAL SCAMMING GANGSTERS.......THAT WILL TRULY BEAT YOU UP.......SOCIALIST HAWAII...FUHERONO!!!!!
Being a local from Oahu, Hawaii, your explanation of Hawaii is pretty accurate. It's cool to know that I live in a place that people dream of living or going to. Beautiful footage though😍
Been going to the islands for decades...Oahu isn't the "Hawaiian islands paradise" people think of anymore. It's freeways, crime, homeless and problems. I love Oahu but it's not what it used to be and it's getting worse. If I want to chill I go to Kauai or Maui. Bring lots of money if you want a nice life in Hawaii too.
Hawaii has it's problems but if you meet the right people who have the aloha spirit in them you will see something that no other place has . I live in hawaii and took people places that is nothing to me but to them is was unreal . A guy from New york i meet fishing . I brought him to my friends baby first birthday lua . Real hawaiian lua for free . A girl from Florida who was in waikiki . I took her to the north shore . we Saw turtles built a bonfire on a secluded part on the beach . If you look for the bad . You will surely find it .
mjgarrett9885ify I met local boy from the west side of Oahu when I came down from mainland he show me choke spots that I keep near n dear to my heart. Without meeting him & otha cool bruddas & sistas I met I would not have da experience I had.. mahalo to all people of the island. It’s true no place like Hawai’i, the energy that stay on island can not be found no where rlse
It is so interesting to think about how a place that so many people fantasize as a paradise, is just as normal as any where else. People live there, they commute, they work 9-5, they have families, etc. I can't imagine living that far from my family for so long, I definitely can understand the problem of living somewhere so small, where the only way out is through a long plane ride. This video made me think of that quote from Up, "Adventure is Out There!"
Agree 100%. I think people who've never been have an idealized view of what it's like to vacation and live there. The negative isn't shown usually. Not on Hawaii based TV shows or film. Friends that visit usually go during the summer months when the weather is great. Usually avoiding typhoons when they come. Stay in Honolulu or possibly go surfing on Maui's North Shore wanting to experience beach culture. While you mentioned there IS still the negative we'd find in other places on the mainland...I would have liked to have seen you show us the negative. Get some video if possible. Video shot during rain storms. People going to work. That it's not all a "vacation paradise" 24/7. What it's like to live there on a budget to what it's like if ridiculously wealthy. And it is like a "big small town"...more Maui than Oahu...where most people are more casual. Even if they do still have their share of multi-million dollar mega mansions running up to $22M. They only have a handful of car dealerships. Something some people living on the mainland might not be aware of. They have a few JP car dealers, 1 BMW,, 1 MB dealer 1 domestic...but if you're one to buy a mega mansion and what that Porsche or Ferrari to go with...you'd be SOL. Plus to have those cars serviced on Maui...good luck. :) Add some roads are not suited for sports cars. Hence all the pickup trucks and SUV's. Most are low-key. Casual. Some might like that. Would I want to live there? YES. But only if I could afford one of those homes on facing the ocean. Steps away....otherwise what's the point? I mean if you want to wake up looking at another condo or the roof of another detached home you could do that anywhere else on North America.
Not really, they do live in paradise, its their life to waste it on their own, you cant find that blue beaches in usa, you cant find that perfect climate in us...
Omfg I’m not gonna lie, I thought this was gonna be another “I loved hawaii1!!1!1!1 it’s so perfect everything is paradise!!!” Thank you so much for talking about all of our problems because a lot of people like to pretend that Hawaii isn’t a real place and it’s just a vacation spot when it’s not. It’s home to people, a place some will only ever know. I’m so glad you enjoyed your time here! You’ll always have hawaii as a home to come back to.
Born and Raised on O'ahu. Lived away for a couple years in California for school. Don't miss it at all. Came back home made it my home base once again. Came back, stopped going to school, worked several jobs so I could travel the world. Out of a backpack and very few funds. learned more than I ever could in a classroom... There is no place like Hawai'i. I don't care how expensive this place is, this Hawaiian is planning on dying here sorry. And yes you hit O'ahu pretty much spot on. But, people need to stop labeling their " Hawai'i" experience, when it's really their O'ahu experience. Neighbor island living is soo different...
Damn, fam, this was a great vid! A+ filmmaking, you could make a whole series of vids about your experiences in Hawaii, how about a video about all the best bookstores and libraries there?
+James Lawner I thought about making it a series, but ultimately decided that one video would be best :) also definitely thought about the bookstores thing but there really aren't enough to make a whole video about them, haha
A+ filmmaking? Maybe a C if you don't count all the out of focus shots. I wish I had you as my film and broadcasting professor. Could it be cuz she's good-looking?
I'm studying for my Spring semester in Hawaii and I couldn't be more excited - though, I am glad it's only for about 6 months. I've never been very far away from home (i'm from Boston Mass) so going to Hawaii is HUGE for me. But, from what I've heard, and from this video, I feel like I'm definitely going to enjoy my time:)
Hawaii is so far away from the mainland. I'm here in Hawaii doing virtual school. It's awesome to hear about other people from the mainland on the island.
What's really amazing is how different Hawaii is compared to the rest of America with its spirit, the people, and culture. I feel it is a very different and special place. I also know its a place where more money doesn't always make it better since it causes homelessness to rise like with all places when big money moves in to your neighborhood.
Hawai'i once was so called "Hawaiian Paradise" in the 80's, early 90's Honolulu, O'ahu seen $$$$ signs in property and prices of living slowly went up, traffic began increasing while outsiders invested in Hawai'i real estate that the state pushed out the one's who couldn't afford home and sell to outsiders with $$$$$. Our Local musicians who made songs about Hawai'i are reall if you here their lyrics and understand what they were saying "No More Hawaiian Style" this place was a place of HUMBLEness....
I love this video. I have a very similar experience and everything you said seems really accurate. I moved to Honolulu with some friends after graduation collage. Oahu defiantly has a dark underbelly but I had an amazing time too. I had to move back to the mainland to get a decent job though. I miss Hawaii a lot and now its actually been 10 years since I have visited. I have gone to Maui and the big island in the last few years though. Anyway I share your love of Hawaii and know how it is to miss the beach and the warm weather. I hope to move back one day but probably to the Big island. Thanks for sharing your story. Aloha.
this was such a great video. i am born and raised in hawai'i and i am still in high school so i'm still living here. but hearing your experience of the islands was just so fascinating to me. im starting my own youtube channel now with only one video. hawaii is my home and i'm glad you got to experience it for yourself :)))
Aloha. Great video. I grew up on O'ahu (26 years). I left 3 years ago, now live in Oklahoma City. (3:52) I just noticed the girl in the background is my sister-in-law's friend. I hope you get to go back. My grandma passed away last week in Kona on the Big Island. I don't plan to go to the funeral.
Kahale Ishikawa Oh you posted ting! I lived in OKC 4 years & I couldn’t wait to come home to Hawaii!!! The one thing I learned living there is “WHITE IS RIGHT”! I learned about racism first hand living in Oklahoma. Had I not met a few very nice white people in Oklahoma I would have believed all whites were RACISTS!!! There are GOOD & BAD IN EVERY RACE, that’s why if you are Racist then you are a STUPID, IGNORANT SOB-POINTBLANK PERIOD‼️✌🏽
Aloha, nice vido. Makes me homesick, a little. I moved to Honolulu in 1983, and met my 3rd husband there. He was my boss in a furniture store, near the airport. While I was there, we got married in Kakiolani Park, jad my last 2 children there, owned my own Taxi Company, and a tour company, as well. I did tours for almost 10 years, so I really had a great chance to really know and understand Hawaii and it's history. Absolutely loved doing tours, better than any job I had ever had. The Hawaiian leople are so awesome. Not really any prejudice in the islands, like on the Mainland. I have lived there a total of 14+ years. Actually moved back, four different times. Once my Honolulu born children grew up and got married, I decided that I just was not in love with there father anymore, so I left and moved back again. I stayed for a year, and moved back to Fresno, California, where my family was. Stayed there a year, and Hawaii called me back again. This time while I was there (2013---2014), my husband decided that we might as well get a divorce, so we did. Then I moved to Grants Pass, Oregon for 6 months, until my divorce was final..Okay, when that was over, I moved back to Honolulu, again..I stayed for just over 2 years, and my .kids wanted me to move back to California, because they could not afford to come and see me with their whole families. So, now I am in Sacramento, where I was orn, and went to High School at. I didn't want to live in Fresno anymore. Now I hang out with a bunch of my High School friends., but I am getting bored again..LOL, yes, I am a ROLLING STONE. So I am going to buy an RV and live in it and that way I cand just pick up and go whenever I feel the need for change.(which is about every 6 months)..I would love to move back to Honolulu, but my Hawaii living is pretty much over with. I have a ton of friends there to visit, when I feel the Islands calling me, which they do when I watch these videos, like yours. Anyway, just be very happy that you had the chance of a lifetime to say you were a KAIMAINA (local girl..lol)
Oh, also while I was there this last time, I went to the University of Hawaii and took a semester of Drama and Acting..Got to be on Hawaii 5-0, was on Comedy Central with Adam Divine, and was also an extra on Jurassic World..So many fun things to do.
Ahhhhh the duality of Hawaii, loving every minute you're there but nothing like taking your memories and heading to the mainland to spread that aloha and know that such a wonderful place exists to someday return to.
I really want to move to Hawaii when I'm older. It's been my dream ever since I was little. I don't know though because it overpopulated and many of the natives are being pushed out. I also don't know how I will pay for it. Hopefully I'll go there someday!
Devin Grace I was born and raised on Oahu and my friends and I can't wait to move, I could give 55 reasons but we mainly want to live in a place with 4 seasons in the future, we can't stand the summer heat! The only good thing is we have the best mall. But Maui and Lanai are my favorites and have more open land/scenery and the best food 😄
please don't native hawaiians are facing so many issues and the more people that move here the more those problems are exacerbated. We welcome visitors but when you are done please return from where you came
It was a good decision not to linger on the negative aspects of living in Honolulu. As the saying goes, "it's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there".
Thanks for sharing a realistic experience with us. I think many people travel to Hawaii with hard expectations. (it better be sunny, it better be warm, the beaches better look exactly like they do on the post cards, the people better be nice). The truth is whether one has a wonderful experience in Hawaii or anywhere else it begins with your own attitude and how well you treat those who you travel with or those you meet. Smile, wave , be gracious, courteous, thankful, sincere and it s guaranteed to carry you and those around you thru the less pleasant experiences. It's no different in Hawaii.
There are 8 Hawaiian Islands. Her experience is ONLY on the Island of Oahu. Every Island is different and this is a video on someone's experience on 1 of the Hawaiian Islands.
Music Games...That is exactly my point. She did not clarify that her experience of “Hawaii” was specifically on the island of Oahu. ALL Hawaiian Islands are not the same. That is the only point I was trying to make. If your perception is beyond that...so be it.
Music Games...You have taken my point (as a true statement of Clarity) and turned into a common sense issue. It has NOTHING to do with common sense. It has to do with clarification and knowledge of the Hawaiian Islands. Someone who knows nothing about Hawaii and has never been to any of the Hawaiian Islands may take this video and other comments on this video as “That is how it is” in Hawaii. All she had to do is say, “The Island of Oahu”. I don’t think that is a difficult statement of clarity.
+Im noob there are so many! A good touristy one is hula grill, for authentic Hawaiian stuff there's ono's, and if you want something super American, there's downbeat diner :)
Us locals really do hustle everyday only to JUST meet our needs. I'm 23 and have a one bedroom apartment that I share with my boyfriend and rent is 1,200 NOT including utilities. It's literally 500 square feet. My parents and family have struggled our WHOLE lives, and they did not contribute anything to my adult life. I have go here on my own. Imagine being young and not even able to do school shopping every year as some are fortunate to do. I've worn clothes that were too big for me my whole life(hand me downs from my 5 year older sister). I can't even afford to be sick from work because that loss of One Day could really impact the payment of bills. Although Oahu is beautiful, us locals can't even enjoy it because we are too busy working 365 days out of the year and working 12 hour shifts only at $15 an hour. It's ridiculous and (yes, we could just leave), but this is the price we pay to live here. Not because it's "paradise", but because this is where our Ohana is, and where our roots started.. thank you for this great video!❤
Without your family, life is hollow even in Hawaii. My grandfather moved my grandma, mom and aunt out there in the mid 50's for his air traffic control job and they didn't like it because the locals didn't make anyone new feel welcome. And from all acounts, it's worse now. My idea of paradise is the Outer Banks, NC beach wheelin in the Jeep with my family. You can have Hawaii.
Beaches and hiking. Thats it here. The dating scene is horrible just a bunch of tourists and locals and if youre not attracted to asians then good luck. This place has nothing to offer. Overpriced for piece of shit apartments and run down crap. Its outdated. In other words. Theres cheaper places to vacation and live in. Youre not missing anything. Hurricane season 8 months of the year. If you dont have a gov job then ha you have to work 2 to 3 jobs here. Traffic is stupid crazy and bad drivers everywhere. Dont go here lol. Rampant messy city and lots of homeless.
Hawaii is a special spiritual place for me, especially Maui. I am not sure if could live there, though. Also I am about to retire, so I wouldn't be working or maybe part time
@lewiss1100 im currently living in florida right now, im 16 but my parents want to move to alabama. I dont want to move their because I can tell its boring. No beaches, barely any amusement parks, and it looks like a place for old people. Is it more racist over there? And whats the population like? I love florida. I live in orlando but i told my parents to move to jacksonville or tampa atleast
Mahalo for your video! Aside from a short stint in Washington state, I have lived here for 53 years. I love to travel, but Hawaii is the most special place on the planet.
Rose K. STFU!!! The Hawaiians, like the Native Americans, lost our land to White America & we are treated as badly as Native Americans in our own land, & you wonder why we don’t care for Haoles? To the Dumbass who said we would be under Japan if not for the U.S. protection!!! If the U.S. didn’t steal Hawaii, the Japanese would not have bombed Pearl Harbor! The Japanese had beef with U.S., not Hawaii!!!
amazing. going to school in hawaii really seems like such a unique, unbelievable experience. thank you for letting us see a little of what that's like--good, bad, all.
It sucks, there is nothing to do after 2 moths and it's like you are trapped on an island and the only way to escape is to pay thosands of dollars. All anyone ever does is go ice-skating or to Chucky cheese when they aren't at the beach
having lived there for most of my life, everything you've said is 100% accurate. Oahu especially has some very serious issues. but yet still remains one of my favorite places
I've been out here since 2002, and I love living in Hawaii. Yeah, I miss being home and my family, but so happy I started a life out here. Loved this video.
I go to university on an island and I can definitely relate to this even though it's nothing like Hawaii. I get to live in a place so many people visit on vacation and I get to experience all of it in my daily life. I feel so lucky to live here and everybody who lives here are so kind and cares about the island. As mush as I love it I definitely feel isolated from time to time because of the distance. It is weird to live on an island and I do find it hard to describe to people because even though it sometimes drives me crazy I love it so much. Loved this video!
I live on Oahu, and have been here for 2+ years. My husband is military. The beach is awesome, the weather is decent, but the prices to live here out weigh all the positives. It's so hard to function here. I'm a California girl and my husband is an Arkansas man, it's just not for us. It's pretty, so pretty but I'm ready for the mainland. The prices of flights to go home are insane too. I was able to go home once but my poor husband hasn't been able to. My brother lives here and it kills me because I most likely never come back to this island.
I’m born and raised on Oahu and love my life here. But just like any place there’s the struggles and hardships we face everyday. I appreciate your honest and true depiction of your time here and your respect of our culture. There’s really no place like here ❤️
Love it!! I'm so happy to finally see a video like this from you because I was always so curious about the "whole story" of you being there. Very cool.
I am glad you got an intelligent and positive experience of Hawaii life. I am a native of S.L.O. Cal. And have been living here from 1990. When I visit S.L.O. it is fun, but I am glad to return to Waianae (or Puako, Hilo, or Kailua , Kaneohe or H.P.P). It just is "All that".
So many tourist don't really respect the aina(land) and that kind of ruins the island's family. The old Hawaiians believe that everyone should be together like a ohana(family) and with people who look down on the homeless that lived here for their lives and people that are racist, this family is dead. No one celebrates the Hawaii culture and it is also consider...dead, unless it has to do with money and now this place is like New York, no one cares about you and you work for yourself. Locals call white people "Hoale" which means foreigner and I (a half white, half Polynesian kid) have been called a hoale, so don't recommend coming. Go to Japan, that place has like hentai and robot dogs or something, i don't know.
Omg I just went to Hawaii in May and seeing this video made me feel like I was just there. I remember and been to most of the places shown in this video! Just lovely. I often think about what it's like living there so thanks for the video. I don't know if you mentioned it or forgot to but it would've been great to also say how expensive it is to live on the islands and one of the most expensive states in the country!
What about the ALOHA??? I LOVE Hawaii it's been my home 4 37yrs & EVERYDAY I found the ALOHA. I look 4 it Everyday, & Miricles happen every min.. LIVE ALOHA💖💖💖 🌟✨💫💖💗💓✌on🌎
I had to take some pretty obscure classes as electives to pad out my minimum credit requirement for my student loans lol there was one semester where I only had two main classes, Physics and Astronomy that only added up to a little more than half lol and all the rest were like, "Art History 102," lol and, "Human Sexuality," so I guess I kinda know where you're coming from. 😂👍
Don't go to Hawaii, traffic sucks and they're alot of crime, and the weather is just awesome everytime and so is the beach, but Hawaii sucks don't go! lol
Rei yen theres traffic and crime everywhere u go, what makes Hawaiis traffic and crime worse than other places?! Im born and raised in Hawaii in Waianae and Waianae is known for a lot of bullshit crime but I can tell u its far from it....Don't get me wrong yes theres crime here in Hawaii but not like the mainland the mainland has more worse crimes than Hawaii does!!!!!!
Vicky Smith Another Waianae resident here. To give an example of how the crime/justice system is bad, rapists with long sentences are out in weeks or less simply because the facilities aren't big enough to hold that many people. So with people knowing that their punishment for any crime will likely not see the full length of time they're sentenced, they usually don't care what crime they are doing. Of course, they'll try to avoid getting caught because it is annoying. But besides that it's annoying, many don't care if they're really caught at all. I'm sorry but I won't pretend the justice system here is as good as the mainland.
Live in Waianae also...homeless growing to point where they're everywhere here. Stolen/abandoned cars every 500 yards. Crackheads all along Farrington Hwy. Love Hawaii but lotta shit here too. Traffic really sucks.
It's because she is talking about Life on Oahu , I moved to Hawaii when I was 20" got the hell out of Southern Ca. You want to live on one of the outer Islands less congestion/Traffic/ Less expensive to live. I moved to Kauai first in 1983 lived on The North Shore for one year. Then moved to the Big Island, been here ever since. Only a population of a 175,000 And you can fit all the other Islands in Hawaii on The Big Island so plenty of Space along with a variety of climate zones. Very little home less people not knocking them just making a Statement. Homes are far less expensive here.
T M Who says I’m black I’m Asian and You’re racist for saying black people have it hard have you even been hard probably not because you have no testosterone
Thank You so Much for being Real sis! 🙏🏾Thank You for not over glamorizing Hawaii! Too many people out here in youtube putting unrealistic Island life. More people need to be aware of the hardships here. But yes we live in a paradise ✨✨
Hawaii is a beautiful place with some beautiful people, but you need to explore the world be for you can honestly the say the "best" or "most beautiful."
