Hey YC - a question about the A7iii. I keep seeing people bringing up the banding/lines that occur with LED lights, but I never know how prominent it is or how that really differs from other DSLRs. I’ve been thinking of getting the A7iii as a film camera but I’d appreciate your thoughts on this. No one has been able to answer this for me!

A DP is a Director of Photography and and big production they report directly with the director and then directs the camera men in what is wanted. The DP themselves, generally don't operate any camera. Great video man!!!

yep. being a DP is not a fun job if you have a lot of ideas and things you want. but if you are into following instructions and all than DP is good for you. I also believe that being DP does not only do the camera works. but also set up the lights beautifully that the director needs. which insanely hard.

I disagree. My belief is there there was money contributed in some way, whether it was just the gas in your car to get to the location. all jobs don't have to have a monetary value, the experience and work in your portfolio sometimes is a better ROI!

I started with photography then studio portraiture. I have probably spent more time on sets filling randome roles than I did in a classroom. Knowledge, experience and trail and error are the best teachers. Way to be fpr stepping out of your comfort zone. Being a solo gun can be fun but having a crew is so much less stress!

Best trick was setting the wb for tungsten in the handover to the priest scene. I thought it was a interior to exterior shot but it was completely interior. Interesting!

I'm the proof of this, which is why I'm spending so much time learning about the process from channels like this one, despite having a Pocket 4k, gimbal, couple of mics, etc. It's like saying good paint and brushes makes you a good artist. Great video yc. I think the interior he wanted handheld when the mom/ son confrontation happened is because of the rocky situation... then he wanted the tripod cause she realizes he going to go and has to accept it so it's not so rocky anymore..

Thanks YCImaging for putting out content that really helps creators. I always find myself coming back here, not only to learn stuff, but to also be motivated to get work done even if the budget isn't all that. I just did my first ever music video. How low budget was it? We used candles, fire, and cheap LEDs to make it work. No doubt some of the concepts you've put out has really helped. Thanks and cheers from Papua New Guinea!

Watched the music video and the shots are pretty neat. You nailed the DP work! Don't know if it's a director's choice or not, but maybe one could have given the video more depth by blending in real dialogue audio of e.g. the mother/son discussion scene or later the drug handover to the priest. For me, tricks like that always add something more vibrant to the video, even if the shots and the music are more of a relaxed style :-)

You're right about the whole camera not making you more creative thing. You can have the most decked out camera in the world but if you don't how to use it to its fullest ability and get creative with what your shooting its not going to make a difference.

I thought that you did an amazing job as the DP in this video. I like the way the director told the story in the video. Also, I thought his choices of when to use a tripod for a still shot or a handheld/gimbal moving shot worked for the story. Not every shot has to be a moving shot to be interesting. Def really liked this music video.

I've done dp work, but if I'm working for free, then I tell em up front that we're going to discuss what we're going to do b4 we do it. It's not just a hear an obey kind of relationship...or you can pick someone else. Also, It's important for me to understand why we're doing what we're doing...I'm the paintbrush. I have to know what's in your mind to know how you want me to hit the canvas. There's a finesse, and technique, and technical proficiency to all this... that's how we make art.

the car won't win the race but a good driver. all cameras are tools for still/motion images (out-put quality variance) creativity depends on the one behind the camera, to some, it's a gift, I believe the only reason people go for the high-end camera is not for creativity but for flexibility and the quality it produces.

@@CoachDeeFree Thank you. I appreciate that. I directed the video and wrote the treatment. I wanted the tripod shot to allow the action to happen in front of the cam instead of chasing the action. My favorite cinematographer is Roger Deakins who allow long still shots with or without dialogue. It grants the viewer some authority with their imagination.
