What it's REALLY Like to Live Aboard a Sailboat as a Double AMPUTEE

Tyler gets real and shares the real side of living aboard our Tartan 42' as a bilateral below knee amputee. Things aren't so simple and often lead to hopping or crawling around.
So why live on a boat? Tyler lost his legs in a skydiving accident in 2017. He lived in a van and Kayleen was living on her boat. While still "young" and Tyler's mobility is still good, they have the dream of sailing south to surf and cruise in Mexico and beyond.

More awareness about adaptation in sailing is really helpful so more of us can go sailing.

Tyler, great video! I'm a right BKA and some of your suggestions I will incorporate for my sailboat. I have started a sailing program for taking other amputees day sailing so a lot of thought has been dedicated to the safety of everyone involved, Thanks again for all your input!

hi, im a recent BTK amputee, left leg. i kind of teared up when you said you were still learning. i am absolutely still learning and feel lost at times. my operation was last summer 2020. things are not looking so great for me. i fell into a deep depression and ended up losing my girlfriend and house. keep making videos dude, i'll watch em.

I know the feeling, just gotta keep pushing!! Anything will be possible, it just takes patience and persistence. I post a lot of videos about amputee life in my Instagram, check it out. I have no doubt you can accomplish all that and more! Ig- tyturner14

You are an inspiration! I am not an amputee but I am a nurse and have worked with many amputees like yourself. Some days will be harder then others but remember to believe in yourself, have patience and the rest will fall into place. Much ❤️ from 🇨🇦

Dude! As of Feb. 2020 I am RBKA. I am about to sail again for the first time in a couple hours and decided to take one more look for real info on sailing as a amputee. You were #1. Thanks for being real. It is a delicate balance, between being motivated and dealing with the daily smackdown reality of missing body parts. You have become part of my recovery. Thank you.

Wow, this is really cool! Thank you. How did it go!?? It is a very delicate balance between not complaining too much (I could complain all day) and not making it look too easy.

It was great. A Wednesday night beer can race, no wind, which was probably good for me. Just nice to be out there. I think I have been working a lot on my balance..but not enough! I am impressed with how you move around the boat. I have something to look forward to. Thanks so much for your channel.

@@suesholin7398 it looks pretty easy on the cool you tube clips but don’t be fooled, I really struggle on the boat. Feel free to message me on Instagram if you ever want to chat about amputee boat life!

Thank you for sharing. It is interesting that the first thing I thought of was how to make things easier. For example, when Sweet Ruca went around the tip of South America they were buddy boating with someone in a wheel chair who had a boat that was all one level from bed, to helm, to tender. On the other hand, Pete, who we have seen working on Tally Ho in port Townsend and also has no feet, is all over the place and it was not obvious until, as a joke, he walked in with his feet on backwards... I have lived with a much less serious injury for forty years after an accident on Lionsgate Bridge. I have lived with the pain ever since. Pretty quickly I had to decide I was going to do life in spite of any pain or limitations. You are making the same adjustment and doing a good job of it (if you think so or not). Many blessings, on or off the water.

Thanks for the vid. I work for the VA and process the orders and payments for prosthetic limbs as well as inspecting modular wheelchair, scooter and walker ramps for compliance to our and the Veterans standards and ADA compliance. So, after hearing about your channel thru Breaking Waves i checked you out and really enjoy your personalities and humor. I say thanks for the video because with my back ground, the first thing i wanted to know was how did you loose your legs. I had to skip a few vids to find out but, wow you answered even more questions than i had! And i am sure many others as well. The human body is an amazing thing and as long as the will is there, the body will adapt. Keep your great sense of humor and can do attitude and life will be your oyster. One other thing, when you find a beautiful woman that is as capable and can fix things as the one you have, brother, hang on to her! :) Subbed!

Super inspiring Tyler! In watching your guys vids I’ve often thought about how easy you make it look and what the reality must really be. I lived with an amputee and he and I are still good friends, his name is Jeff Denholm. Lost his right arm commercial fishing in Alaska. He still ice climbs, telemark skis, surfs big waves all over the world and is a spokesperson for Patagonia. He’s a legend and an inspiration, just like you are becoming! Keep charging, stay positive, eat well!!, and get plenty of vitamin D, stress little, stay fit. If anything comes to mind when we’re out sailing that I think might help you guys out on the boat I’ll pass it on! Peace ~ Curtis

I have a good friend who’s got a knee down amputation on one leg, and he’s one of the most basadas sailors (and overall humans) I know! Hope you see you guys on the water one day! Hi, Tyler! I just watched your video and found it really helpful. I have been a sailor all my life and last October I lost my right leg due to an accident. I'm still trying to cope with my new life as an amputee but I am determined to keep sailing. I don't know how things are going to turn out and I'm still trying to figure how it will all play out. Any pointers would be really helpful, thanks
@AllAboutSpray

Your passion for sailing will keep you motivated to push on. All it will take is some ingenuity and adapting a little! For example I use volleyball knee pads in the cockpit on days I struggle to put my legs on. Set small achievable goals and the end goal of sailing will come before you know it! All the best!! -Tyler

Your very brave and thank you for sharing your life. Forgive me for being nieve but would some kind of bars on the ceiling help with getting around, like a gymnast using bars or rings, it wouldn't be easy either. It's a dumb idea and I probably shouldn't of sent this. All the best :)

Hey Sherry, I have lots of suggestions but everyone is so different. So first I have questions! AK or BK? Walking or Wheelie? Other trauma or paralysis? I have tried so many different ways and I do things differently depending if I am legs on or legs off and how my other issues are doing. If you have Instagram or Facebook feel free to message me on there with more info and I’ll see if I can help! @tyturner14
