I've been following Kym since he started his RU-vid channel. Love his content and knew a little about his previous success outside of F1. Great to hear the full story. He's a real legend in my eyes. Hope to meet him in person one day at Albert Park perhaps.
I shot motorsports for years. It's hard work and with a few exceptions, doesn't pay well. Always enjoyable to see when a shooter makes it to the top of their game like Kym has, making great content and bringing us along for the ride. 👍
Blew my mind to hear he started Messages on Hold, watch any game replay from the 90s here in Australia and you saw his logo! His M logo is imprinted in my mind! Was always behind the goals
Great chat with Kim. Photography has certainly evolved significantly, to the point where success in the industry often seems accessible if you have the financial resources and a basic sense of composition. Years ago, I shadowed Darren Heath, and I was disappointed to find that much of his process involved holding down the shutter 24/7 continuously and selecting the best shots afterward. In contrast, I worked with a modest Nikon F100, limited to 32 frames per role, where capturing the perfect moment required precise timing and careful attention to settings. Photography was a true test of skill-but those days seem to be long behind us.
Wow , quite insightful from Kym 9:23 When he talks about how he mentally dealt with the challenges of is first business. People of today would be sulking and blaming other people and playing victim. Really good mentality He really deserves all the success he's earned 💯
This guy is living my absolute dream shooting F1. I've been shooting automotive action for years but waiting and grinding for that break in! Awesome hearing all of this stuff from someone who has made their way in. Good work!
Huge thx & appreciation for this excellent chat/interview with Kym Illman Olly, so much so that I’m now subscribed & keen to peruse your past & future content! 👌🏽 I’m a fairly new subscriber to Kym’s channel & as a casual but highly enthusiastic fan of all things Formula 1 (esp. in the last few yrs!), I 💯 lucked out as imo he undoubtedly has THE BEST ‘all ‘round’ F1 content out there, checking ALL the boxes & some! It’s sooo cool to learn more about this inspiring soul & his life’s journey! 🙌🏽 Cheers! 🏎️
Followed Kym, probably not far off from the start of his F1 photography career, in recent years I've found more and more out about him through just random curiosity and he's a really interesting dude. Great interview and the reason I've stumbled across your channel. Well played Olly 👍
Only 20 comments, what? It's been great following Kym He is a great compliment to the sport of F1. His formula while not new, is new to F1 and he delivers it so brilliantly. A very clever man who saw a void in the industry. I enjoy his content more than the F1 races themselves. My F1 consumption would be. 1. Kym Illman 2. F1 Highlights on YT 3. Ted's Notebook Sitting to actually watch an entire race is now becoming less and less. And now Kym fancies himself as a Sam Chui 😊
I've been following Kym for a while now. I love his behind the scenes content and he's definitely an inspiration. Thank you for an absolutely great interview! ❤
If you're shooting near the track, always have at least one escape route. Got some cracked ribs shooting an offroad race and a buggy kicked up a good size boulder and I had myself pinned between 2 trees.
Well.... Kym and F1 Photographer..... it just doesn't fit. He bought his way in. He is no more than average and really he doesn't need the money and brings his crew to film him while shooting average images. TBH is not a great addition to F1, and I know how many regulars felt about him when he started and how some still feel that trying to give pics away to Teams is not good. F1 photographers do not travel in Business or First Class planes, they do it on a budget, they do not have 4-5 cameras and as much lenses as he has, and no they are not rich as he was since Day 1. So.... nope thanks.
Fair enough for commenting. But it’s a shame you have made some claims that aren’t true. I personally think Kym is an amazing addition to formula 1, he brings a new perspective to the sport and has worked incredibly hard to give value to his audience. Don’t really know what you mean by that statement about buying his way in… he followed same process every other photographer has to follow. You might have seen a few of his videos on business flights and first class planes, can’t see a single problem with that tbh. Positive vibes only on this channel.
@@OllyFawcett Fair enough also. But I can dislike him and tell some truth. Oh no, he did not by what i've heard. I can see the issue. The issue is that this is Not the reality of the most of the F1 Photographer's out there. Positive vibes only, no issues. I haven't said anything wrong, just what I know about the guy and that I don't feel it's a rolemodel. That's positive vibe.
It's: AN F1 photographer' not A F1 photographer, the title alone makes me not wanna watch ... even though I like Kym's channel, I'll go watch his video's instead.
