One thing I like about Adam discussing "past work" is that he "name drops" those he worked /collaborated with, irrespective of where they stood /stand in the "hierarchy"
I 100% agree. I love the he just genuinely enjoys the process, warts and all, even when or perhaps especially when something didn’t go particularly right or perfectly to plan. Mainly, I’m simply floored at how well his name recall actually works for who what where and when when retelling these stories.
I love that too, and he never has a bad word to say about anyone (I assume the people he dislikes he just doesn't mention!). I wonder how many people owe a successful career to Adam Savage, I'm sure it's a lot.
I went to ILM when I was looking at transitioning from becoming a dentist to become a VFX artist. I got an awesome tour of the facility including the stages and the model shop. It changed my life, I had found my purpose. Pan was in production at that time and I saw some of the ships. Such inspiring work. My dream was to work at ILM as a kid from the peninsula. Sadly, the opportunity never lined up, but I have loved every minute of my career. I love everything you are doing and thank you for creating so much magic that has inspired so many of us to pursue our dreams of spending our life in the arts.
I respect the decision to never get back into big special effects. But, but, if they ever make a movie off of one of Brandon Sanderson many wonderful books I hope you would take the job if offered. It would delight me in such a huge way to see your name in the credits with a author I love and writes books that seem right up your wheel house. Thanks for another great Q&A.
Well he doesn't need to be an FX director to participate. He expressed his love for making hero props before. Imagine an One Day Build of a Shardblade to be used in the movie. He could make Oathbringer.
Adam talking about Mythbusters and filming the first season in 2002, I didn't even realize that Mythbusters was started before I was even born. Really loved mythbuster, the show is what got me to go to school for engineering
At the time MythBusters came out I wanted to do the king of work Adam was doing but I didnt know how to get into that field. MythBusters is the reason I am now an Engineer.
I’d love to know with only getting as personal as you’d like to be are you getting residual compensation or do you need after that awesome run to find work after mythbusers ?
I'm sure most of the experiment-driven channels on RU-vid have MythBusters to thank. It changed the world/lives...probably more than Adam could have predicted.
Got my nerd kid into Mythbusters. Finally got him to sit and watch one with me.. its the one where you and Jamie built a tree cannon in season 2. He's hooked.
Getting a desk would be so exciting... I was so looking forward to getting a desk at my job, when the pandemic happened! Now I'm permanently fully remote. 😂
@@Ti-mothy8248 Lol! I can't afford anything like that! I work from home on a "desk" made of a door across two filing cabinets. It's not pretty, but I can move it completely by myself! Which is super handy being a five foot nothing woman living in an area where rent prices are increasing way faster than my salary...
Heritage auctions had a Peter Pan “Jolly Roger ship filming miniature model” that looks like it might be the ship Adam is referencing. The back certainly has a frowny face and the size seems about right. I can’t link it here because the comment gets deleted.
No disrespect, but I'm not sure whether to be amazed by you or be appalled by you. I can understand preferring T1 to T2. But to prefer any of the non Cameron flicks? That's incredible. Were you born after T2 came out? Did you see T3 at a young age? I'm genuinely curious.
My god, T3 is a hell of a film to go out on, because as a movie it's a profound disappointment of a Terminator film, but I can't say a single bad thing about the art direction, design, or effects work. It was wildly successful in everything Adam would have worked on and utterly failed as a continuation of the story. (As far as I'm concerned, Dark Fate is the T2 sequel of choice.)
Mythbusters is one of my absolute favorite shows, and I love it. Thank you Adam, for everythingn you do. You are an inspiration to all of us tinkerers, modders, and makers.
I always wondered why you and Jamie seemed to always rub heads so to speak. You were always very up to anything and everything to test a Myth while Jamie always seemed hesitant. Why wa that and are you and Jamie in contact and what is he doing now? I wish you guys were still on it was very educational and entertaining.
I think I would follow that last answer up with, well, so, your skill set doesn't put you in the effects directors chair, what about just building for the effects teams. I get that you are *A*dam *S*avage, but that doesn't mean you need your name in the big letters at the end of the movie.
Fire half the tested staff if needed - do the channel with less views to allow stop talking about Mythbusters & Jamie and do more new stuff. Adam is better then this then talking Mythbusters and Jamie for views. Channel be way better and bigger leaving Mythbusters in the past.
I love that Adam has been around so many Aussies that whenever he says "Sydney Australia" his accent turns into this weird hybrid of American and Australian. Accents are so fun.
@@williammaxwell1919we tend to punch above our weight in several fields. I believe we have one of the best medal rates compared to population in the olympics
Adam was my Model Making 1 teacher. Still know how to make space ships out of styrene sheets because of him!! He got some tv job or he could have been model 2 teach also 😊 Such a great teacher and inspiring…as we all know now because we watch his channel.
I found it sad that ILM shut down their model shop to exclusively digital. To me, that was the dream job of being in the special effects industry. Even the company 32TEN, which took over the original model shop, shut their doors down. Maybe this would give smaller FX houses more opportunities to work on model making, and other forms of practical effects.
Not to mention, as Peter Jackson demonstrated, "bigitures" have the advantage of resolution where all digital effects stumble. I found blended effects often made the most interesting and realistic effects since some things still can't be readily modeled with accuracy.
My dad started working on pan at the same time . He also built the model for the interceptor that they blew up for pirates . I believe he helped with the rigging on the ship for pan . He was at your going away party ILM threw for you guys when you got the discovery deal . He considers it the best job he ever had :)
Pretty sure i got in the mythbusters train around season 2 or 3, so i was about 9, i am grateful i grew up watching you guys create and problem solve and think and have fun. Probably sculpted my mindset in some ways. You guys are kinda like heros haha
When you said, "We delivered the particle accelerator, and Peter Reuben was the art director..." my mind heard that as Paul Reuben, and I had this visual of you delivering an IRL particle accelerator to Pee-Wee - which sounds like it could have been the set up for an amazing mad-cap comedy script.
Can someone explain to me what Pan he was working on? There was a Pan that came out in 2015 with Hugh Jackman, and a 1995 European Pan... but there doesn't seem to be any movie that were made in the early 2000s...
My great grandmother lived next door to Mr. Whipple. I actually knew him as Mr. Wilson. He moved next door after WW2 to her in California. He was from Canada from what I remember. My grandmother sent flowers to his funeral after his daughter Melanie called to notify her. He and his wife Meg had sent flowers to my great gramothers funeral in1998.
That would actually be an amazing contest to have, Adam Savage builds a prop for your short film. Hell, there are a lot of short films being made by broke students, would even make for an amazing series of episodes and give exposure to some students just starting out.
Geez man. One annoying thing about adam is he just name drops over and over and over again. Very annoying when people do that. I guess thats not surprising considering the city he lives in
Adam, I love that whenever you're asked about "bad experiences" or anything in a similar vein, you find some way to pivot your response to something positive. Like your 'Bicentennial Man' story and many others I can't recall right now. It is an admirable quality and a thing worth emulating.
I’ve been watching your vids for the better part of a year now. With this video, I’ve been forced to contribute to your patreon (I’m cheap as hell btw). Thank you sir for your transparency and guidance.
Please Hollywood!! bring back practical models. It is not the same lighting a 3d computer model to a real practical model. You can tell the difference.
Did Josie Mayday really ask if you would ever be an effects director? I thought the question was more general than that. Or was some of the question not said out loud?
And after 4 hours in a hot car, still maintaining the texture of a semi frozen beverage. Grimace being the facial reaction. However, purple is purported to be the color of royalty, 🤔 and Barney. Yeah, nah... scratch the royalty descriptor.
I absolutely remember the first Mythbusters show..It came on in late Jan/ early February of 2003. I was in Orlando Florida with my Girlfriend of the time. I was watching the show from our hotel while she was working at the Harley Davidson University amual conference. I was absolutely hooked. I had always heard the Impala and the Myth came from the New Mexico/Arizona area, and an Air Force Airman. Absolutely loved the show
You should all check out the Corridor Crew episodes with Adam, you can see the models Adam made for Star Wars and Matrix as well as some back story for the movies. It’s pretty awesome to see
At 1/4 point of any creative process, you're starting to figure it out and figure out where it wants to go, while coming against the first issues with making it. I feel bad for Dave! He did an amazing job, though!
Did you call her mom Matthew in a round about way? Maybe you could do something similar thing with you two switches places because," Women and children first"
