Badd Medicine here and its Midsommar reaction time
In the film "Midsommar," Dani, an American student dealing with her sister Terri's mental health challenges and their family tragedy, faces a strained relationship with her distant boyfriend, Christian. He invites her to a midsummer festival in Sweden with his friends. Upon arrival at the remote Hårga commune, they witness disturbing rituals, including an elder's failed act of harm to oneself and subsequent severe consequence. Christian decides to write his thesis on the commune, further upsetting his friend Josh. Dani, troubled by the ceremonies, contemplates leaving but stays at Pelle's insistence.
Christian's group learns of the commune's practice of bringing in outsiders for a specific purpose, but Christian refuses. Mark, another friend, is lured away and faces a grim fate. Josh faces an unfortunate situation while snooping in the commune's sacred texts. The group is affected by substances, and Dani becomes the May Queen, while Christian is affected and takes part in a ritual with a commune member. He tries to escape but finds evidence of his friends' situations and is paralyzed.
The commune leaders reveal a plan for a specific communal event, with the final participant chosen by Dani. She selects Christian, who is placed in a bear's body and subjected to a shocking ceremony. Initially horrified, Dani eventually smiles, suggesting her acceptance of the commune's disturbing practices.

Funny enough, Ari Aster said the big moral of the movie is to "shit or get off the pot". Whether it's a bad relationship, or the situation you are in gradually turning ominous, it's human nature to rationalize everything until the pot tips over, but at that point, it will be far too late.

I absolutely love this movie, I find a lot of people hate it or misunderstand it. Dani going from not being able to show her grief around her “friends” and feeling like a burden, to being able to absolutely break down with the women who cried with her and made her feel validated. Of course she would join the cult after that, she never felt more welcomed and loved.

This is not a crime drama. This is a psychological horror drama about cults. Cults never make sense because they don't use their common sense. And as you guys mentioned, the characters weren't good people and it's hard to empathize with them. A lot of audience sympathize with Dani, who in the end finally is happy to find a group of people who emotionally connected with her. She finally found peace.
@lilscenechick1995
@lilscenechick1995 7 месяцев назад
It was insane to me how Dani was accused of being “abusive” to Christian for, uhm, seeking comfort from him. People who overly sympathize with Christian really get on my nerves. I don’t think he deserved to get burned alive, but he was definitely a horrible person, not just an emotionally unavailable boyfriend. He didn’t care all of these people were going “missing,” and was quick to throw his friends under the proverbial bus. There was really no hope for Dani; her trauma made her the perfect candidate for brainwashing into this cult.

@@alvinsmith3894 That's effed up. That's definitely a cultish thing to do, to "judge" if someone's decent that way. There are many different reasons why someone might sympathise with Christian here. You don't know anything about those who sympathise with him. That's no different from extremist Christians making up moral judgments based on if someone listens to Marilyn Manson 😂 You are projecting mate. It doesn't scream volumes on how they'll treat their partner. You assuming to know how people are only based on that screams volumes about you though.

Some details: - The opening tapestry summarizes the plot from start to finish. - "What is she so happy about?" The end line of the script explains it: "Dani BEAMS. She has been embraced by a new family. She is Queen. She is not alone. A SMILE finally breaks onto Dani’s face. She has surrendered to a joy known only by the insane. She has lost herself completely, and she is finally free. It is horrible and it is beautiful."

I watched a really interesting video on youtube, an ex cult member was analysing cult scenes from movies and Midsommar was featured. They referenced the scene in which Dani is surrounded and the other women begin to mimic her cries. He said this is a real and genuine technique thats definitely used in real cults to create a hive mind mentality. It dismisses her feelings, making her less of an individual and removes her autonomy. It adds to the feeling that all you have are the people with in the cult. Apparently in some cases it can even be trance inducing, particularly if done in a particular rhythm. Think we see that sometimes in even positive ways, say when we are at festivals or concerts and everyone sings along even when the music stops. We all feel part of something great for just a moment. Made the scene even more eerie when re-watching it.

Well, that's what I always talk about. Many of the approaches to films that you know, if it's someone as educated as Ari Aster, will have studied culture inserted. We don't necessarily need this information to get into the film's game, all it takes is sensitivity to strip away the addictive expectations of other horror works. But it's very enriching to know. This film is a masterpiece. Very misunderstood by people who expect terror to be just feeling afraid or scared, when, however, terror is feeling disgust, discomfort, anguish and even laughter at what is unknown.

As a Swede I absolutely love this film, the attention to detail and research they did is amazing! The painting over Dani's bed isn't just foreshadowing, a bear and a blonde girl, but is also q very famous painting by the Swedish classical painter John Bauer. The aesthetics, clothes, art, music, it's all very similar to our folk culture. Ättestupa was mentioned in viking texts. If you lived long enough to be a burden you could jump from a cliff and still have an honourable death. The blood eagle is also from viking times, the victim had their spine split open and lungs pulled out while still alive. The dancing around the maypole is traditional, and the dance until you expire is from a folk song called Hårgalåten (which also gave name to the commune, Hårga) in which the devil dresses as a fiddler and makes the young people dance until they die. There's a brief scene where girls are walking backwards picking flowers. This is from an old superstition, it looks a little different in different parts of Sweden but basically if you pick 7 flowers and put them under your pillow on Midsummer eve, you will dream of the man you will marry. Honestly, the least authentic part of this film is the nature around the commune. It isn't filmed in Sweden and it shows.
@Lannisen
@Lannisen 7 месяцев назад
Oh, and you can see them put a pair of scissors into the baby's cot. This is from the superstition that iron wards away Fairy folk who would want to steal the baby and switch it with a changeling.

as far as i understand it, tho... the blood eagle is more of a mythical ritual, rather than an actual one. i remember reading that historians haven't been able to find any evidence that this was ACTUALLY done.

@SidPhoenix2211 oh sure, there's no proof that ättestupa was practiced either, because its very very hard to find proof of any of these things after 1000 years. I was in India when this movie intially released. By the time I returned back to Norway, the movie was almost done with its theatrical run. I managed to catch the VERY LAST SHOWING in my local theatre. It started around 2100. I arrived and discovered that I was the ONLY PERSON IN THE THEATRE lol. Over the course of the next few hours the movie proceeded to freak the fuck out of me. At a certain point I thought that everything in the frame was slowly warping and I was going crazy. And I couldn't look around at other people to check if I was seeing things or not lol. I rode my bike back to my dorm 2300 onwards and to date it remains the most on-edge I've EVER been lol. At a certain point, while walking my bike up a steep hill, I properly JUMPED cuz I thought some man was creepily waving at me through a basement window. Turned out it was just a plant on a windowsill with a knick knack next to it lol. The scissors in the baby crib could have a meaning of 'cutting' the attachment between parent and child, cutting of that development of empathy. In an earlier scene a woman holding the baby tells Dani “Her mother is on pilgrimage. It helps them to detach.” And a point is made in showing that the baby keeps crying and no one comes to help it calm down. In this way they raise people to be detached, unempathetic, so they will more easily accept their practices of human sacrifice and killing old people and visitors. And it could be partially based on real practices, it looks a bit similar to how in some cultures superstitious people would put a small lump of metal under a pillow of a child who has nightmares or in general is a fearful child (scared of thunder etc) to "help it against fear". I'm from Eastern Europe and my grandmother did that to my brother when he was a kid, we found a lump of some metal and were like what the hell.

I’ve rewatched it a number of times and read some deep dives online, but basically if you rewatch the film and look at how the Horgans act towards Dani v how they act towards the other New Bloods, it’s very different. It becomes clear that Pelle was meant to bring her as the May Queen to his Green Man and the other NBs were meant to be sacrificed. But we make flowercrowns, eat midsommar food (crawfish, shrimp, potatoes, eggs, sour cream with dill, herring, meatballs, strawberry cake and so on), sing short songs and drink or as we call it (snapsvisor). It’s popular to celebrate it by the coast with a big group of friends/family or the countryside! Or you just gather a group of friends and get wasted lol. The movie had alot of similarities from reality, except that the movie is a cult 🙃

The thing that stood out the most was Florence's acting in the beginning. She let it out when she was crying and it was powerful. The music set the tone for the rest of the story and while I knew things were going to go bad, I didn't know how and it made the film unique and special.

A film that makes horror in daylight, in the clear, in a candid place, beautiful in that way, full of angelic people with Shangri-la behavior and good vibes, this idea is perfect and a great social critique too. In fact, I like it when horror subverts expectations, like, turns something seemingly innocent into a disaster. In Ari's hands, discomfort is right, and it's a compliment. Midsommar é my favorite film of his. I could spend hours citing scenes and symbols, but I leave that to specialized critics. I loved the reaction.

The length worked for me because it's a novel of a movie. It's like an adult fable. I just love how absorbing the story was, especially how it was told. I always thought that there was an interesting exploration between loveless relationships and friendships to those with cults. There was always something onscreen telling different parts of a story. I'm sure someone has recommended Aster's previous one, Hereditary. Comparing the two, I can say I definitely appreciate the humor in Midsommar.

The film's about relationships, basically. More specifically, a break-up. Danny didn't feel valued and in the end chose to let go. You can see how the villagers shared her pain with their cries and yelling and such. For the first time ever, she felt a support she hadn't had from her boyfriend. I love how tragic, yet poignant the ending sequence is, though. That's the genius of this film, and there's a great line from the script that goes: "She has surrendered herself to a joy known only by the insane. She has lost herself completely. It is horrible, and it is beautiful". All that coupled with the great visual effects that symbolize the drugs and the hallucinogens, plus the fantastic soundtrack make this an absolute treat. It is kinda hard to understand at first, though. Ari Aster truly is the current horror movie king. Him and Robert Eggers have made some of the best stuff in horror atm.

@LiaRavenswood

This is one of my favorite horror movies. In a way it's very cathartic? lol. It's very hypnotic and relaxing despite the disturbing bits because it's so visually pleasing, and even though Dani joined a literal cult by the end, from her perspective she got what she wanted: to feel loved and supported by a community, and a "happy" ending is so rare in horror movies. And it was pretty satisfying seeing Christian get punished, even if he didn't deserve a terrible death. There's a lot of perspective at play. Like we know everything that happened is Bad, but at the same time it's easy to get sucked into the cult and accept it all as "normal" or "good." A testament to the good writing. Also having a lot of prior knowledge/context for the viking inspirations and stuff and an interest in folk traditions really took away a lot of the shock of things for me. I was like "this is fine :)" Very interesting movie in how it affects people differently. I imagine it was a really awkward viewing in cinemas lol.

Guys this is definitely not a cultural thing xD this is a movie about cults and the methods they use to recruit people. In this movie we see how they are constantly being handed sustances, sleep deprived, Danny was love bombed by the Pele and the whole cult, Pele targered Danny because she was in an incredibly vulnerable state and even Christian in the end was r~ped because he was in no state to concent. The funny thing is that the movie even gaslight us the audience to believe Danny is happy and in peace at the end but we do not know if she is save (what happened to the old may queens??) or what type of life she will have (will she have to convice people to join? will she be forced to have kids and hand them over?) so is kinda like people how thinks she has a happy ending because she was finally over Christian or "has a new family" were also indoctrinated/conditioned by the cult just like Danny. Is a great way to show how easily any of us can be sweped into a situation like this one and how hard it would be to get out.

I will admit that at first I did feel a tiny bit of relief/satisfaction over Christian finally being removed from Dani's life no matter how violently (though obviously if he had been a real person I wouldn't have) but realistically she wasn't gonna be ok let alone happy after everything that happened. Dani had replaced neglect with an even worse abuser. She was no longer ignored & alone but now she was essentially controlled & obviously unable to leave. The Helga act like they love Dani but they almost certainly picked her because she was so obviously vunrable with very few people actually going to question where she had disappeared off to. So how can an attachment built from delibretly & repeatedly breaking someone down mentally, ever be healthy? The answer is it can't. The Helga "love" Dani but it's all bassed on manipulation, like a magnificent play they're just acting out where the only one (outside of the university guys) not aware of what's going on is ironically the very girl that's been picked for the lead role. The Helga fawn over poor lonley Dani but only because they want something from her, after that need has been met what would Dani's life in Helga really be like If she was even left alive after the May Queen ceremony (because the movie states that there had been a previous May Queen so it's up to the audiences to wonder what might happen to previous May Queens especially as no matter the attention lavished on her during her time in the cult Dani is still technically an outsider as she was not brought up a Helga)? She would have to cook what every other woman cooked, eat what every other person in the cult eats, clean when all the other women clean, wear what every other woman wears, take copious amounts of drugs, dance when the other girls dance, have sex with the men that are picked out for her (after potentially having to put her pubes in thier food & her menstrual blood in thier drink) while a bunch of old naked women chant behind her, bear children (only for them to not even really belong to her as 'babies in Helga are raised by everyone'), have to take part in/witness more gruesome rituals, then kill herself when she gets "too" old (having to make sure to "land right" or else face getting bulgened to death with a giant mallet). Dani, understandbly, couldn't handle the stress any more so she gave up, she surrendered every last bit of morality/sanity she had so she didn't have to deal with the pain anymore but by doing so she gave up her entire identity as an individual with the ability to say no. This is quite clearly shown as, after the initial adoring attitude of the crowd during the May Queen ceremony they immediately get Dani up in the air, though a surposed sign of respect & adoration for thier new queen it leaves Dani phyically as well as mentally unbalanced (especially as, like usual with the Helga, no one warns or explains what's about to happen) & quite vunrable as at any point the Helga could let go of the podium they've placed her on & let her fall. The second instance is when they're at the table about to eat. The Helga let Dani enjoy the a small sense of power for a brief moment (having her sit at the head of the table & be the one who decides when everyone could start eating) but it is only an illusion as when they dangle the unappealing fish in Dani's face, force it into her mouth against her wishes & then do nothing but laugh while she retches over the side of her make shift thrown they are sending a very twisted message to the audience if not directly to Dani (who's probably too mentally distressed by this point to untangle what's really happening to her anymore) & the message is clear. Dani may be wearing the crown & that may grant her a certain amount of "special treatment" but we should never forget who actually pull the strings. Dani is the Helga's toy, a new born baby to laugh & fawn over but her actual comfort & right to autonomy are non existent to the Helga, after all in her desprete need for "acceptance" she had traded it in, unknowingly, as soon as she had let them crown her (obviously her fate was actually sealed the moment she set foot in the "commune" but the Helga didn't really let up on thier 'we love you' act with Dani until she'd gone past her breaking point mentally). When Christian & the others are burned alive it isn't just them that die, Dani as we had known her throughout the story dies to, gone is the distraught insecure orphan desprerate not to be abandoned again & in her place is someone else, a Helga. The cult had finally won, Dani was one of them now & I think the reason why they no longer seemed to focus on her anymore (she was left to choke on smoke & stumble around in her entriley impractical flower costume crying) is because they knew they no longer needed to get her to accept their way of life as her's, after the very last remains of her old toxic life are burned away Dani had finally surrendered completely to the way the Helga's lived, she had been fully indoctrinated. The Helga knew that Dani was no longer going to try to leave or object to all the terrible things the cult dose, which is what the Helga had wanted all along. They'd hurded thier trumatised prey through a maze of horror into a castle of flowers until she was so emotinally exhausted she no longer had strengh to care that they'd trapped her there.

Swede here and I love answering questions! Weed and mushrooms are very much illegal here, even for medicinal use, and are generally very frowned upon. The scissors in the crib was for protection of infants (before they had the chance to be baptised) based on the old belief that certain creatures would come and take the human child only to replace it with their own. Disabilities and the like were often explained as the "healthy" human child had been replaced with a disabled non-human child. So Ättestupan has a complicated history in that there are no legitimate historical documents that mention it. It's most likely the idea of it was used as a deterrent of crime and unwanted behaviors. But it's never actually been used in this kind of aspect so no worrying about offending the culture on this one Oak 😊 The bear in the cage is not a cultural thing. The pants license is a real thing, it's when you turn 16 so this college guy is literally impregnating a recently turned 16 year old 😅 It's not really an old folk tale or anything, but Midsommar is one of the biggest holidays of the year in Sweden with lots of food, dancing, May poles and old folklore and traditions. But it's really them just taking the holiday and traditions and using them as background for the horror element. Also, while the movie takes place in Sweden with a lot of Swedish actors, it was filmed in Hungary so that cliff (the Ättestupa) is not in Sweden. Sorry for the very long post but I love talking about this 😂

What i think it's really interesting about this movie is that is both really unsettling and also really beautiful. I remember the first time i saw it i was also disturbed but with time it really grew on me. I think it's brilliant for Ari Aster to find new ways to see horror in really contemponary ways, this being the terror of a clash of cultures and not being able to understand the meaning behind it. This movie also makes me think about (being mexican) we are always tought about how when the spanish came they saw the mesoamerican cultures as mearly barbaric people who needed to be saved when it was just another way to understand the world. And how the western culture was violently imposed to "save" this people. So i believe this is a great movie for that reason, bringing a cultural debate to horror.
