“I feel sick. My chest hurts. This is insane. I love this show.” that’s the apothecary diaries experience right there, and I wouldn’t have it any other way 😂
The light novel author, Natsu Hyuga, actually confirmed in an X (formerly Twitter) post made in January 2021 that the guard later received punishment from the military strategist, Lakan. During “The Ritual” chapter, Lakan was visibly upset that his daughter was hurt. The short post of author Natsu Hyuga, also nicknamed Boar-sensei, revealed that the guard was beaten and tormented by Lakan for a while after that incident. The guard eventually managed to get promoted 2 years later because he is a hard-working guard at heart. She also added in a reply that the guard was just faithful to his duty. The events of episode 19 follow the light novel’s Volume 2, Chapter 12. Aside from this X (formerly Twitter) post, there are no further mentions of the guard’s character in The Apothecary Diaries’ light novels and manga adaptations."
This is one of the best episodes of anime ever. The setup, all the cases Maomao has touched, and her flash of insight; all lead to this moment. And Jinshi's walk as he carries her. The song. His anger. And his love. It's magnificent.
If you notice from the previous episodes, Lakan has been feeding Jinshi some intel that are related to the things that have happened here. Lakan was surprised when he saw Jinshi, who wears clothes exclusively for royal family here, carry someone like Maomao, a mere servant and courtesan. They basically confirm here that Jinshi is not just a eunuch
He may have also been from the shock of seeing his daughter, *spoiler for those who haven't finished the anime* A face that he can actually see, being so injured and being treated with such care from a royal man who easily could have ordered anyone in that room to carry her
Jinshi knows the way to Maomao's heart. Feed the crack addict their crack, or in this case, the apothecary their drugs. Wait, a minute... Also, the intensity of this episode tugged at my heartstrings so much, glad to see you also felt it.
Lakan wasn’t expecting either of them to die, he’s just shocked that Maomao is that hurt, and that someone as high up as Jinshi is carrying her in full show of his status. It had a lot of implications. But maomao wouldn’t have got inside the building without Lakan, so Jinshi would have died if it weren’t for him. Wouldn’t make sense to think it was him that set it up. Not to mention he’s been investigating it too and nudging maomao and Jinshi along with hints about certain things. He figured out what was happening, but he just doesn’t really care at all. He’s more interested in maomao than anything
Yeah, the both of them like puzzles and when he saw her perusing the grounds, feeding her certain things to solve kinda scratches her itch. Only this time, you can see the pain in his face that Maomao is so injured and needed to be carried out. I think people feel he was sinister just because he smiles a lot and Jinshi doesn't understand him so he calls him "creepy" lol.
Lakan is making that face here, because he is MAD. Like, really mad, much, much more than Jinshi - first, he saw his daughter got beaten by a guard, second, when he saw unconscious, bloody Maomao in Jinshi's hands, he understood that he basically almost sent his own daughter to her death, and now he is FURIOUS. Lakan, if you rewatch the previous episodes very carefully, is actually the investigator who tries to solve these mysteries as well from his official position as the royal military strategist, it's just he prefers not to get involved himself and uses other people to do all the work for him - in the scene with the warehouse explosion he dumped the investigation on Lihaku, then in the following episodes he dumped all these hints and suggestions on Jinshi, trying to got Maomao involved as well, and as for why... well, this is where the spoilers start, I can't say any more than that) Will wait for your reaction for the remaining episodes)
For me, this is the best episode of the series. I know a lot of people like the last two, I do too, but so much culminated here and the stakes and everything, the intensity, for me it just puts this episode above all the rest.
Lakan wasn't involved in the "accident"... but I think he had a hunch something is going on and kinda persuaded Jinshi to look into these incidents... If Lakan was involved, he wouldn't help Maomao get pass the guards or push Jinshi into investigating the cases... Lakan was shocked most likely because Maomao got injured and because that "accident" happened, but he didn't know that every case would lead to this
I kinda think the same. Maomao mentions one of the things she hates about Lakan is his incredible intellect. And how he doesn't use it. He doesn't do investigations into things, mostly because he really doesn't care about anyone. Except two individuals. But his intellect gives him a gut feeling about things without having to put any effort into things. Which I think is what Maomao dislikes the most. Basically she is a little jealous. She puts all this hard work into things, and Lakan just figures things out with a gut feeling. Most be very infuriating. I'm still unsure why he looks so shocked when he sees Maomao being carried. Jinshi's rank? Maomao being hurt? That someone tried to kill someone of Jinshi's rank? That Jinshi cares about Maomao as a person? I don't know!
This was by far the most emotional episode for me. Those animators did NOT hold back when animating just how badly Maomao got beaten up just so she could save a life. And she didn't even know it was Jinshi she was saving! And even afterwards, she was in so much pain that she couldn't even pay attention to what was going on and was just like "oh, my leg is bleeding... I should stitch that... Do I still get the ox bezoar....?" SHE CARES SO MUCH THAT SHE WAS WILLING TO DIE FOR A STRANGER
Please let ONE of the youtubers reacting to this show get to the end spoiler free. I love this show but hate the fandoms insesant need to spoil the twist to every reactor in order to feel "smart"
Very much yes. Especially with this ONE aspect that’s intentionally hard to interpret until late in the game, and people very insistently try to prevent the attempts from the show (of which THEY ARE FANS) at obfuscation and misdirection from succeeding. Ugh. Hopefully this arc adapting LN2 will be the worst of it. I _am_ worried about one of the core mysteries of S2 being too obvious, and even if it’s not, people are very likely to go “tee-hee, I know something you don’t know” and _make_ it obvious. (If you’re a source reader who’s not sure what secret I’m talking about, look up “ROT47” and translate this: “$9:DF:VD ECF6 :56?E:EJ”.)
@@VisualEnjoyer9756 This would be in the second half of LN4, which Nekokurage’s manga hasn’t reached yet, even in the Japanese magazine chapters. I think the other manga maybe has?
@@VisualEnjoyer9756 I started on the LN from volume 3 when I ran out of manga. I'm still waiting on manga volume 10, too -- neither of my local library systems have a physical copy, and even the ebook has 17 holds on 5 copies, so I'm resorting to Inter-Library Loan.
There's something strange about this series. It's not something I'd usually watch, but the mysteries, light as they are, has kept me engaged. And 20 minutes of every episode goes by in a flash and I'm off to the next one. Suddenly 2 days later since I started the first episode, here I am. By the way, I'm catching up with these reactions as I watch the show, so nothing is spoiled yet. But so far the story has been light and predictable; and I'm usually not the type to predict things in mystery stories. Jinshi is already revealed as the son of a concubine. Considering the current state of the Rear Palace, Jinshi is the rightful heir to the throne. Naturally, certain parties will make attempts on his life. And that is the premise of this season. Oh, and Jinshi's not really a eunuch.
I hope Alana avoids the comments like the plague until the end of the season. People REALLY like spoiling the next few developments in the story, even accidentaly (by suggesting character motivations and whatnot).
Lakan è arrabbiato, ha sospettato che stava per succedere qualcosa e così è stato 😢 è tutto frutto di un piano ideato 10 anni prima con la prima morte accidentale. Forse si scoprirà 😤
I still never understand why so many reaction channels paint Lakan as some evil guy and wanted Maomao and Jinshi to die this episode when he's visibly shocked at her being so injured. He didn't see her because she never turned around before, only caught her argument with the guard. So to see Jinshi carrying your unconscious daughter with multiple wounds made him mortified.
Because he's been coming off like he's a ruthless genius who engineered everything and can't be trusted or understood. And maomao goddamn hates him, when she usually has a certain amount of compassion for nearly everyone.
@@ragnar3434 How did he come off ruthless who engineered anything lol. He inspected an explosion site, and gave her a riddle task to complete via Jinshi. Which neither led back to him at all. But you're right Maomao dislikes her father. Still doesn't mean he shows up to help her means he wants to see her hurt..
@@Timmycoo That's how he's coded. All his visual cues and the way he's introduced. It's the shit he says plus the fact that maomao hates him, the way the camera portrays him as mysterious and strange, the fact that hes one of the only characters where you can never tell what he's thinking, and seriously, maomao clearly loathes him for reasons she doesn't seem willing to explain.
@@ragnar3434 The entire point that is hammered home by Maomao and her adoptive dad is don't come to a conclusion based on preconceived notions and lack of information. Which is what a lot of people who watch this show are doing. The only things we "know" about him are what Jinshi tells Maomao and even he doesn't know much, plus he's presumptuous lol. I agree that the way he skulks around is mysterious but isn't that jumping to a conclusion that he's evil because of that? He's touted as an incredibly intelligent strategist so you can see the parallels with him and Maomao in what they enjoy.
