Hi , I want to share my experience of being a failure artist: what keeps getting me feel unmotivated is not the fact that I don't like drawing enough, but the feeling of being lost, and not knowing if what I'm doing is helping me to improve my skills. I know that probably there isn't only one way to get to a high skill level, but I just would like to know that what I'm doing is not a waste of time , and that I'm practicing the right way. But I keep doubting that what I'm doing is helping me to improve and to reach the level that I want.

Out of all the videos I've watched on this channel, this one really spoke to me. I've had a dream of making comics for quite some time now, and even have some ideas for a series I want to create. But for a while now, that's all it's been: a dream. Instead of working on it or doing some smaller work before I take on such a huge project, I've been driving myself into a false narrative of thinking "oh, I'll get it done when I feel I'm ready; and when I do it get it done, everyone will love it." Either that or I think "what if they don't like it? I want this to be perfect/successful". Combined with my insecurites as an artist, my attempts at trying to improve, and a fear of failure, and you get a bunch of procrastination on my part. That said, while I do realize now that I'm a complacent artist, I still want to get this project done. Not just that, but I have so many ideas for stories that I want to tell somehow in comic form. This video made me realize now that if I want to get there, I need to gain a better mindset. I'm going to work hard to make sure these comics get put out there for the world to see, and with any luck and determination, they'll be seen sooner than later. Thank you DD Markk. I wish you the best of luck going forward, and hope you can remain in high spirits.

I had to pause the video because you said something that really touched me as a young mother with a child who just started school. It's hard finding time to pursue the things your passionate about when you have a family. By the time you get done handling your main responsibilities like your 9-5, being a parent, and if you're married like myself, being a spouse you barely got any energy left. Then there is all the other stuff like keeping up with bills, eating healthy and being active, etc. Anyway one thing that I'm realizing it's best to focus on one thing at a time and while you may not be able to do exactly what you want finding ways to get close to it can be just as good just as fulfilling. Like I have three story ideas in my head and they all relate to each other but I know right now it's probably best for me to do shorter stories that I can turn into mini comics instead of trying to do the whole webtoon thing because I just don't have enough time or energy for something so big. But I hope one day I'll be able to. This way I am gaining experience in what it is I eventually want to do even if it is on a smaller scale. Sorry for how long this comment was but when you started talking about kids and spouses and all that I just had to comment because I am in that situation right now and I'm only 24😂

I'm close to my 30's I've spend more than half of my life to become an artist and start doing projects that deserve attention. All the motivation, hopes and dreams was meaningless against the wall of truth. Art is about skill+passion+talent. Without talent passion will drop quickly and your skills might end up just not enough to break throu the grind wall. Majority of my relatives were naturally gifted in art and instead of pursuing the life of an artist they decided against it. Me on other hand wasn't gifted with anything at all, but my parents tried to make an artist of me and I agreed. I exited my art school with C grade and didn't make it to uni, so i took college which i dropped out multiple times and became a burden to everyone involved with my life in the process. Later I developed depression and multiple health issues due to my bad habits of self destruction. Not everyone meant to become an artist and I wasn't the one for sure. I have nothing to show for myself, no other skills other than drawing tasteless porn for anyone willing to pay, so i finally decided to quit and just live my sad life till my body gives up and die. Call me a quitter, but I shouldn't have took this path to begin with. Maybe I would be happier never taking this path and waisting so much time and energy into it. Now i have no money, no recourses and no energy to find new path to go. I know no one will listen until it's too late but if art in not working out in 5 or so years, drop it, it probably won't work for you at all. Consider your life from this point and while some hopes and energy is there, search for new path. Miracles do exist but I no longer believe in them.

Jesus Christ I never thought a RU-vid video on art could make me cry so easily but it’s a new sense of relatively “you don’t have all the time” because for me I only know how to mimic behavior. I don’t really have myself by default so I listen to others to carve my path since when I’ve tried; I’ve met with yelling, generally bs behavior. I’ve tried for so many years yet i see others doing better than me even though I know damn well I’ve been through more and it just always feels so unfair? So many things have happened to me but I keep pushing cus im incredibly stubborn and I don’t wanna give up on my old self or whoever that was. I don’t know who they were. I wish I could talk to them since everyone understood them better, since now I’m the brash overly emotional judge mental but usually caring kind. People have complimented me saying im well more mature but honestly it’s sucks on how I got it honestly? I’ve lost track im so sorry but Jesus Christ im actually in a whirl over that

this video was really inspiring. I feel like I've been in a rough patch lately because I've got my final high school exams coming up and well, my whole life has pretty much been just aiming to get perfect grades and I'm terrified about tripping up when it finally matters and I'm also not so sure that I want to pursue the career I was being nudged towards because I don't want to just end up in the work cycle that the masses ends up in for security and because they are too scared. I think the fact you are honest that you also struggle helps because so many of the self help videos present this unrealistic standard where they pretty much blame you for feeling down and not being motivated or productive, when it's a natural occurrence and what matters is how you get through it, not how you avoid it. The regret exercise really hit hard because I've been putting off making manga because it's time consuming and difficult to balance with full time school, especially when you are aiming for the grades I want, but I feel like it's definitely what I regret more. I don't want to die having never made anything, even if it was utter garbage. I also liked the distinction between determined and complacent rather than good and bad (honestly I went into the video expecting to be roasted). I've been working on my skills and fundamentals lately because I want to actually get better and not just have some pretty front on shots on Instagram that use bright colours to hide the fact that there's a lot that I currently struggle to draw. Sure, I could keep drawing those face shots and fanarts, and I'd enjoy it and probably gain followers faster, but I didn't start drawing to get Instagram famous or to get a heap of likes. I didn't even start Instagram to do that. So thankyou, a great video and I feel like your willingness to be publicly vulnerable and to discuss the real issues instead of just dancing about doing all the fun stuff, really helps artists. :>

I know some of the things you said were dark, but those are legitimate fears tho. Our passions are precious. And everyone wants to fully realize/achieve those things. I mean I’m 24, and I feel like I’m not even close to starting the things I want to. Characters I’ve drawn once, and never revisited. Stories I’ve thought up, but haven’t drawn yet. It’s sad to think about. But I guess I just have to turn those sad thoughts into motivating ones. Instead of thinking “All this time, and I’m still not at the place I want to be”, I can think “Wow. There’s so much to look forward to”. And hopefully that helps.

It's nice to hear from someone smaller who's art is close to my level and see you struggle with the same things I do. I'm also working on a comic book and this vid was helpful in maintaining a positive outlook. If I had to have one note watching an unrelated timelapse of you drawing would be a bit cooler than those anime clips but since you've been feeling down you probably didn't have energy to draw and that's completely understandable. I've been "starting" to draw since I was 15, I would buy these drawing books, even go to courses, but I always picked it up and dropped it off, I'm definitely in the quitting half of people, If there are any younger people watching, my main advice I would give is please ignore any thoughts that people might tell you or you might tell yourself about doing something at a certain age, I remember that thought used to always linger in my mind, oh people learn their craft when they're like 5 years old and are created in a test tube and were just born to draw, that's nonsense. Just keep practicing and don't get too overwhelmed. I'm 28 and even though I left my passion for becoming a professional artist behind, before a single sketchbook would last me years, now in this year alone I've managed to fill up 3 sketchbooks and the idea of that just drives me crazy, I can't believe how much our own self thoughts bring us down.

as a kid, I wasn't talented but I never let that fact stop me from drawing. around the point of me being in 4th grade and drew my first comic, I actually believed that i could be the best comic artist and continued to make the series no matter what. and then in 2020, I hit my art lock and thought "I wasn't good enough" because of it. even though I'm still young, I loved that false narrative of making the best manga series yet took no steps. despite the fact of me not being Talented, I still made the time to draw pictures. though, I was just doing it for fun and didn't really set a goal until recently, I have. I've finally decided to stop being lazy and actually take steps.

really simple. if you cant motivate yourself look back at the things that initially motivated you before. there are certain mangas i love and read every time im not feeling motivated. and above all make the time and sacrifice your time. if it means not hanging out with friends working two jobs just to supplement the ability to make art everyday you gotta do it. there will be many time you wan to cry and give up , you might even comes to terms with the fact that nothing may overcome out of it. but you have to keep going. put hte foot work and keep going. replace habits like mindlessly scrolling on your phone to habits that will benefit you, such as research, adjust your social media to fit your needs and help you. and if you cant find the motivation find deadlines, things to apply to. Giving yourself deadlines makes you work, its a total game changer. even just a deadline to apply to things will push your art so much. You just gotta keep going

Sometimes it feels like all of us need to get together as artists and all give each other a helping hand in order to succeed, which is why I'm grateful for youtube cuz you can come across stuff like this and get that spark of motivation to keep pushing forward for our passions. I'm about to turn 18 soon and im about to get started for this struggle but this is one of my biggest dreams since I was a child so I'm gonna push through and I really really hope one day my art and stories can motivate others, just like DD does for us and continues to do. Sending you all my love 😔❤️❤️

Thank you DD, I'm aspiring artist in my teen and I really needed to hear this. This really made me contemplate what I truly want to be when I grow up and how I'm trying to make it happen.

Maybe i should go back to trying to learn how to animate, i kinda gave up on it and just settled with just improving my art, animation is something younger me always wanted to do but always gave excuses on why im not starting even if i didn't have an animation program i could've still done it if i wanted to. I really appreciate the videos that you make, they really motivate me to change myself for the better and just go for it

You forgot about the last 2 types of artists: Those who are born with talent and don't care. Those who are born with talent and are driven as hell.

Our immigration system is a big poop filled trash can fire. I hope things start working for you. You are running on determination fr fr. It sucks you dealing with this. Focus on what drives you. Also maybe that biology knowledge that you have may be part of your stories one day. I was the quitter for years, the military was my dead end job and now I am pursuing animation. I start back school next week. Bro you young don’t start doubting yourself now. You nursing a tree when you nurturing a dream. It takes patience and time.

When you are facing your fears and anexiety just pretend you are space marine, like there is this neat feature about them in lore where the more terified they are they are more driven to overcome whatever trethens them, its basicaly reverse fight or flight response that helped me so much! If something is dificult, it is more of the reason to overcome it now instead of procrastinating on it Also, here is my drawing practice plan for those who might find it helpful: 1. Perspective, Line, Form, Observation (basicaly you train your eye and brain to recognize simpler forms in world around you, which is one of the most important skills) 2. Values, Conture, Texture, Color theory (its whole other beast, so learning all of fundamentals mentioned previously is a must before tackling color) 3.Anathomy (the fun stuff, big tidies and child bearing hips yay)

This is an amazing art video and so real and a little raw. But I think there is no hack or secret to being successful than this, this decision, this amazing dedication. All the heroes of life have to go to amazing levels of effort and dedication so why would your success. I an so glad you are made of such tough stuff ddmark and I just can't imagine anything but amazing success with this mindset... just ah don't burn out. You can do it!
