Liquid Staking Derivatives! LSDs. What are they, how can we use them to generate returns, and WHY!? are they becoming so popular, so quickly? We’re going to address all of these burning questions right here, right now. So strap in.
Two years ago, researchers at crypto venture firm Paradigm argued that staking derivatives would have a “major impact on the entire ethereum ecosystem.” They even suggested that stETH could eventually replace ETH in many use cases, and potentially even replace ETH altogether.”
Given the rapid growth in ETH staking through platforms such as LIDO, we have to wonder whether we’re in the beginning stage of that transition. Yes, tokens issued by protocols like Lido and Rocket Pool are hot right now, but the importance of LSDs goes even deeper.
Slowly but surely, liquid staking derivatives are seeing a level of adoption that suggests they’ll eventually dethrone ETH as the most important asset in DeFi. So let’s quickly remind ourselves of the key concepts at play here before diving deeper into this promising new DeFi instrument.

What happens to these liquid staking derivatives in the inevitable situation where nodes containing the real ETH are slashed. If the slashing reduces sizable amounts of ETH then the derivite tokens are no longer properly backed, and the price seriously depegs from ETH. This could cause cascading liquidations on all the lending platforms destabilizing markets?

This reminds me of the 1920's US stock market where you could borrow 90% of a securities value to reinvest and buy more stocks. We know how that ended up. There is a reason why equities margin today is 50% and 30%. If DeFI wants to prove itself as an evolution than it needs to incorporate the lessons of the past. The ability to borrow "Adfinitim" will ultimately crash the market and wipe out all crypto holders.

Slashing is one reason which could be a catalyst for a crash. The other might be another Luna event. Where a major staked token fails causing a cascading reaction because millions or billions of dollars of [leveraged] LSD's were used to purchase them.

It's quite intriguing, I must say. The ascent of LSDFI seems to be relentless. There's an influx of impressive projects entering the scene and pushing it forward.
