It's how they learn. Plebs
@Mr._Lister_The_Sister_Phister
She didn't say the Pleebs do all the work. She said the pleebs are in charge of making sure the etiquette actually happens. Basically she's saying that the "waitstaff" will set the tables according to army etiquette, but when it comes to the rest of the mealtime etiquette its up to the pleebs to "do the right thing" and follow it while nobody is standing over them enforcing it.

This is new. And it is West Point. They are the aristocracy. At OCS, we had to march in. Give the command to sit. Don't talk. Eat the meal as a square, basically at attention. Then see the TAC officer to be quizzed on tactical knowledge to see if you would be in the pit, doing exercises until you threw up the meal you just ate. OCS had more hazing than boot camp, because they wanted you to quit. And I went to both Ft. Benning and Parris Island for boot camps. Not all commissioning programs are the same.

There was an air force version that we'd see only during parades, but there was sort of a rivalry between us. One parade, it was STORMING. It rained the whole time. As we were marching before it started, just warming up, the air force kids were standing under a tree in formation holding a huge tarp over their head and laughing at us getting all wet. I'm not sure what they thought would happen during the parade, that they'd march with a tarp? IDK. But they ended up having to march right behind some horses and it felt just poetic justice.

Of course there’s a difference. At the end of BCT, you should be able to be a basically trained soldier capable of deploying if need be. You know how to wear the uniform, operate and clean your weapon, wear a gas mask, and follow orders. All of that has to happen in 3 months. This is not BCT. They are trying to make officers over the course of 4 years. Thus the process is much more drawn out. They go through their own version of basic, but it’s 7 weeks and it’s easier because the point is to get them prepared to be military college students for the next 4 years, not to be combat ready. That part happens later after they graduate. The academies are difficult to go to, but it’s a different kind of difficult.

The utterly unprofessional sprinkling down of cutlery by the eating end from a hand grasping out of a mixing bowl would get most wait staff a warning and a docked wage for screwing up the business food hygiene standards. How hard is it to pre-arrange the cutlery like a restaurant would by wrapping the set in a napkin instead of handing some random a bowl of utensils?
