What Made The Da Vinci Painting Worth $450 Million (HBO)

After nearly 20 minutes of nail-biting bidding on Wednesday night, Leonardo da Vinci’s painting Salvator Mundi, shattered the world record for the most expensive work of art ever sold at auction. Including fees, the 500-year-old rare masterpiece sold for $450.3 million.
Some questioned the authenticity of the painting as truly Da Vinci but with a price tag that far surpassed initial estimates the concern now seems irrelevant.
Before the sale, Vice News Tonight went to Christie's for a private viewing of Salvator Mundi with contemporary Brazilian artist Vik Muniz.

Painting Expert (On Call-Friend of Rick): Seems authentic to me, but unfortunately, it is an imitation made by a Chinese. See this line here, it contradicted Leonardo's paintings, if you see his paintings (which I doubt, sneers). Still... (Look at Rick, then back) the painting has a value. You see, you won't find any kind like this, not anymore. Rick: Then how much is it? (Look at him with meaningful gaze) Painting Expert (On Call-Friend of Rick): They made 4 of this, so I would say... mmm... around 4 grand. Rick: 4 grand? Okay.

Money laundering

@angelgjr1999 6 лет назад
rurutu M No. Money laundering paintings sell for half to one million dollars. This is way more than anyone could afford. Tax alone would kill motive to launder that much money in one purchase.
@zainabe9503
@zainabe9503 6 лет назад
It could be money laundering alright. The way I see it, the purchaser is not foolish enough to waste his huge fortune on a mere painting. It is bought as an "investment", an "asset" to store your wealth into, that you can sell later on at much much higher price. Very much like gold: its practical value is nonexistent, but it is valuable as an asset and investment. And you might ask, what makes a thing so valuable yet so useless? The answer is in human emotion: the thing must be seen as "divine", it is romanticized so highly, venerated like a holy-grail, and it must be so mighty rare. Remember in Napoleon's reign, Aluminum was way more expensive than Gold, because it was a novelty metal back then. If your wealth is stored in paper money, it may devaluate (inflation) in a blink of an eye (remember in Germany post WW1, huge stacks of money were more valuable burned as a heater, than stored as wealth).

In the Salvator Mundi Christ traditionally holds a globe, meaning salvation for the earth. By painting a crystal globe, which represents the full cosmos, da Vinci is actually making a grander and less insular, human-centric spiritual proposition. Da Vinci was a deist, an individual with individual beliefs in the Absolute.

What’s the point of buying an authentic Da Vinci painting representing the FALSE image of Christ. That man that you see in the painting is Cesare Borgia, his father Rodrigo de Borgia also known as Pope Alexander VI decided that the representation of Christ needed a modern day makeover. So he hired Da Vinci to paint multiple paintings of his son Cesare Borgia and send them all across the world. I’m sorry ladies and gentlemen but Da Vinci was a small pawn in a much larger game. Don’t believe me? Look it up and decide for yourselves.

Da Vinci never worked for pope Alexander the VIth, he worked personally as a war engineer for Cesare Borgia . He was hired by Cesare while Leonardo was still in Florence and he was only commissioned to draw maps and make innovative war machines for Cesare's wars. And the story of the so called fake image of Christ which is in fact the figure of Cesare is a completely nonsense. There are many representations of the Christ before the reign of Pope Alexander in 1492 from the beginning of 14th century or even 13th century. Moreover the western depiction of the Christ in art is originated in the eastern part from the Byzantine empire where the Christ is shown again with long hair and white skin. And i don't say that because i believe that Jesus looked exactly like that , because i don't , but that story with Cesare and the modern representation is so overused by people that it has become annoying . The explanation for the Christ traditional look is that in the beginning of the Middle Ages the wise men and the important people of a community used to have long hair so the first christians could't imagine Jesus in another way than looking like the wise men of their time.

There is no human figure in any picture by Leonardo in which the head is perfectly aligned with the torso and shoulders. He always gave their figures some slight tilt or turning to make them more interesting. If this is a work by Leonardo then it is a anomaly, a singular exception. Although I must admit that other features (mainly the style) really look Leonardo's.

Honestly, it’s a rare of a kind. I think it’s abit absurd, I would have purchase one of Leonardo’s codex instead, but this painting is probably more rare since it’s never been seen in all of the public eye for the past 100th of years. Remember Leonardo was around the late mid 1400s died in early 1500s. All I am saying is that the price is well worth it, but it’s significance compare to other works are not up to par. No doubt this piece have some good technicality to it. In terms of art.

Before you speak, get your grammar right. I know he produced war machines, he only did it to find work. Remember that Leo bounced around from one patron to the next painting was not a stabilize income. Your theory about this whole crystal ball tool; I honestly, have no idea what you are talking about. Religion has many symbolism and iconography. You know that Leonardo, supported and ushered many of the way how people think, specifically science. I honest, think that Leonardo knew the sun was centered was a inhibit because of the technology at the time. You can say that Copernicus and Kepler helped ushered that thought. It was until the invention of telescope and different type of glass helped people to look beyond the stars. Most of his codex may have been lost as the result of time, invasion etc. Romans was way way before the Italian Renaissance and the dark ages. In the end, you don't know most of the type period, its a mere speculations. I have read many books on Leonardo's life time. I understand that your getting at that Man discovered many of the science today, which is honestly true and was not a divine gift of thought.

What the painting sold for is its purchase price, not necessarily what it's worth. Most of the time the purchase price and the market value are equivalent, but there are instances when that is not accurate. All of us have seen the last two bidders for a piece competing with each other to the bitter end. You have to look at where most of the bids ranged not necessarily the last offer. You also have to look at Da Vinci's and his contemporaries bodies of work as this sale may be an outlier and not representative of market value. The problem with overpaying for art is that it is unlikely to come back onto the market until market prices rise to where this painting is once more worth selling. That could be a very, very long time. Eventually, like all things in life, the painting will come to market either by this buyer or their estate. It would have been nice to see the actual painting as it is like a bridge in time between you and the artist but I can live with photos and reproductions. To the buyer. Enjoy it with your friends as it is an amazing piece of art. As with all art, no one really owns it, we are just one of many custodians through time.

Its obviously Christ. The position of the right hand in the posture of blessing is a common trope used in a variety of religious depictions of "The Big Cheese", if you'll pardon the expression. The "Halo" is the face. Its radiant. eva alam You make a good point regarding the crystal ball. Christ was often depicted holding an orb, meant to represent the world, but DaVinci had a skeptics opinion regarding organized religion and liked to take shots at the system in his paintings so your magicians comment was actually on point in a sense
@Megaabal
@Megaabal 6 лет назад
Because the crystal represents the world, it's just take a look in the name of the painting, "Cristo, Salvator mundi", this is Latin to "Christ, world savior", there is a long tradition of paintings like that in the art history, google it, and all of them with the same common title, that it's the title to this Christ especific pose. One hand in a blessing gesture and the other keeping some globe that represents the world. This is so Christ, that the globe and the hand blessing let's even more clearer that the author used a traditional technic to paint it. But, however, would be not strange if Da Vinci would have wanted to give a mystical impression to his Christ.

In my opinion this painting is a depiction of Lucifer and here is why: 1.As we all know Lucifer is a master deceiver and some argue that he is half man, half woman. As we see from the painting the man is way too feminine looking, has a 'fabulous' hair and as 1 Corinthians 11:14 asks us, “Does not even nature teach you that it is a shame for a man to have long hair?” But let us get it clear - Back in the time of Paul, society (social nature) considered it a shame for men to have long hair and for women to be bald. Modern society does not. Neither God’s nature nor biological nature considers it a shame. Adhering to the social norms of their time was a form of keeping the second greatest commandment. Those social norms have changed. Therefore it can be concluded that men may wear long hair if they so desire, AS LONG AS THEY AVOID LOOKING LIKE WOMEN AND VICE VERSA;Christ is usually depicted with a beard and it is missing here. Look at the chest area, it is almost looking like a women's breasts sticking out. And notice how the clothes line on the chest sweeps downwards as women's and not upwards as men's. (check different depictions of Christ and you will see); 2. Let's continue.They say that this painting is one of the few that Leonardo da Vinci had actually finished painting which is fine, but ask yourself this question: if you could paint as good as Leonardo how would you represent Jesus Christ? If it was me a would paint it similar to many other depictions - kind looking man with slightly longer hair, beard, maybe I will paint a halo around his head, for a background I will put bright blue sky, some fluffy white clouds...you get my point I would like to represent something divine and pure. And here comes the question: Why would Leonardo, if he is depicting our Lord and Saviour, paint his background pitch black? It is almost like the man is lurking/coming out from the shadows - and we all know who is hiding and scheming in the darkness, far away from God's light, the Devil himself. 3.One fact that everyone seem to miss: Since when is Jesus Christ using a crystal ball?! The only ones that are using crystal balls are the mystics and mediums, and we all know what the Bible say about them 'Leviticus 19:31“Do not turn to mediums or necromancers; do not seek them out, and so make yourselves unclean by them: I am the Lord your God.'' 4.This point is purely optional :) , because we delve deep into the conspiracy. Is his brown garment on the clothing representing an upside down triangle with an "eye" inside? and continuing downwards to create the symbol 'As above so below'? Is this a nod to another secret society?, as we know Leonardo was a part of one. We can only speculate here... As a conclusion I ask you not to believe me, but at least think about it and open yourself to extreme possibilities that the man painted in this painting is not our Lord and Saviour, as they want you to believe, but the exact opposite! Thank you.

On the frontier of liner perspective and accurate human anatomy, Leonardo sparked a style that is being referenced to this day. From movies to games, we can see his and many of the artistic masters hand in the compositions. This is why his work is valued. Drapery and hair has been a ongoing object in painting pre Hig Renaissance, but what he does different is not only his lose sfumato style but his depiction of emotion. This could have been a much more interesting video if y'all were to slightly inform the audience about these MAIN points without losing the vibe you wanted to put out about Leonardo and contemporary currency.
