i think World War perfectly encapsulates what devin thinks about. he just builds whatever he feels like and doesnt have any care about the reception it gets. keep making videos like this its super entertaining
Zylenox can make unplayable levels, he made golden shade. Anyway I thought this was a really interesting video and touches on the difference I noticed between the 2 a long time ago in a way more collected and thought through way. Easily 2 of my all time favorite creators in the game but for very different reasons. Zylenox made a bunch of atmospheric masterpieces with incredible music representation, jam-packed with early newgrounds nostalgia, and Devin makes unhinged acid trips.
To put it simply, I've been friends with Devin for over a year now and I'm still learning stuff about him. This video is honestly incredible, so is Devin! Also, thanks for the plug at the end!
your comment about devins levels being like a diary is a really good way to put that. he has no rules and just builds whatever the hell he wants, whether it fits or not. i think part of the reason his levels can feel unsettling at times is because of the fact that they are decorated so well, yet there are so many random things that are unpolished or just dont fit the level at all, yet they are still good. truly one of the most unique creators of this era of gd
"He doesn't want people to like his levels, but he wants them to be disgusted by it" This was genuinely one of my biggest inspirations when it came to creating and building my style. This philosophy made me have SO much more fun creating
i think you talked for me, devin has been my favorite gd creator for a while and when my friends asked me why, i just didint knew what to respond. His levels feels so out of place and and original, i could see and play a devin level for hours and still be confused about it. thank you for this video mindcap, keep the good work.
Devin has inspired me so much, for his rebellious attitude towards the rating system. After over 7 years of not making a level, Devin and Mangut gave me the opportunity to make a part in a collab on his account called “Mangut Birthday” These two gave me the confidence I needed to start finally making a new level. I’ll try to make this like no other level in the game. Like how Man Man gave gd community utter disgusted feelings. I will try to give people the most Raw, Personal, and Emotional level I can hopefully invoke. Thank you Devin, DiamondDemon935, and Mangut for giving me the push I needed. 💗 Please look forward to the release of the level (in like about a year. lol)
My first exposure to Devin's levels was... Man Man. I couldn't get it out of my head for a full day after that. Few days later I discovered his other works and he quickly became one of my personal favourite creators for how weird and unconventional the stuff he makes is.
"He doesn't want people to like his levels, he wants them to be disgusted by it." In a few ways (excluding having a massive ego), Devin is kind of the Lars von Trier of GD. He doesn't create for an audience, he creates for himself. He doesn't make levels to impress you, he makes them to repulse you. Some might see this as shock value and nothing more, and that definitely has some merit. However, experimenting with media by doing things like Devin or Trier also has some merit. At the end of the day, it's a free world, and people are gonna make what they want to make. If you don't like it, then just move on with your life. (btw if you don't mind gore and intense subjects, go watch The House that Jack Built. It was made by Lars von Trier and it's a fantastic horror movie imo. It's DEFINITELY not for everyone tho.)
Even if devin doesnt care about his levels getting rated, I think it would be cool if robtop adds a +18 filter for the levels so world war can get rated, its one of my favorite levels rn, my favorite part is that one with the purple rotating circles
I love playing devins gameplay. He doesnt care about music sync outside of maybe transitions which makes his levels feel like weird platformer games, kinda like smw rom hacks
what amazes me is Devin has one of the most in depth understandings of the editor ive seen and could create virtually anything he wants and this is what he makes..Its AWESOME
unironically the levels i have beaten of his are some of the most fun levels ive ever played. I love everything about what devin is doing and i hope he never changes
I adore your work here omg As much as i’d love to talk about the beauty of devin’s art i can’t bc 1 you fucking did that already and 2 i wanna talk about the beauty of your art as well, these reviews and love letters to creators you’ve been doing lately, which i really hope will continue
Devin2003 has been one of my favourite creators for a while now but I haven't really been sure now. I absolutely love your perspective and it's gotten me to think about his levels in a different way
2003Devins work reminds me of dadaism sometimes. It was an artistic movement after WW1, which had the purpose of confusing and unnerving observers with randomness and meaninglessness. It challenged what could be considered art. Devin has a simular approach, where he just makes whatever confusing shit he wants and lets you figure it out for yourself.
I think my favorite part about Devin's levels beyond the crude and bizarre decoration, is that they always (at least most of them) use songs that aren't on Newgrounds. He goes so far as to pick a song HE likes, even if it's not usable on GD, and use it anyways. Widder, for example, used a Jackal Queenston song-- someone whose music isn't on NG. I want more levels to use Lapfox music and I am not kidding
This is exactly what I've been wanting, there are (very few) levels that use lapfox/halley labs songs. maybe someone can make a cool level with something from Trauma or PTSD
One of my favorite levels from Devin is his level called Game Player. It’s completely different than any of his other levels because you start out with Mastergame style mechanics, but then have to use those to hit buttons to move around a 2nd cube which later on you have to use to move a 3rd cube. It’s Minigame ception & I love it. Plus it uses the most unique song for GD, Another one bites the dust by Queen. This was the 1st level I ever saw in GD to use a real song in a level that wasn’t a NONG song. Later on there was Only in Ohio Dawg by cw2003 gb which used the entirety of Free Bird but this level came 1st. I love the normal interesting gameplay Devin has in his other levels, but this is just the type of not too hard puzzle game style stuff I like to see.
The way Devin creates was honestly the thing that made me pick up the editor again. The only two 2.1 levels I’ve completed have had zero theming whatsoever, and that’s because I think it’s more fun that way. The creating process for my only rated level atm involved me randomly coming up with something and thinking, “that seems cool, lets put it in the level”.
Devin is the representation of building for fun and not give a damn what the result's gonna be. Btw Devin if you see this, just wanna say that your level Scissors is amazing, one of my favourite hard demons.
The thing that separates devon from zylenox aand virtually every other creator. Hes completely unhinged, he doesnt care, and hes probably eacaped from a mental asylum😊
Devin is my second favourite GD creator of all time (JonathanGD is in 1st). I have always liked Zylenox and I have watched every single one of his videos when he was still playing GD, and to me Devin is the perfect replacement to Zylenox since he quit GD. My favourite Devin level is "Devin2003", and "World War" is my second favourite level of his. And like MindCap said, I also really like that he doesn't care about any criterea that almost every other GD creator is soo worried to not break. :D
He definitely brings a level of eclecticism to geometry dash levels with his style. Which i haven’t really seen anyone in this game execute as well as he does In a weird way he reminds me of Mike Patton with his bands like Mr Bungle and Fantomas. Its a weird comparison but it makes a lot of sense, an extremely talented musician who utilises his talent to make the weirdest, wildest stuff imagineable with absolutely no care as to how it should progress, its disgusting in places but thats the whole point of it all. You can listen to any of the music made by those two bands and see where i’m coming at with this analogy. Devins like an outsider to the modern landscape of creating and will go onto make whatever weird stuff he feels like and i hope he never stops.
Devin is an amazing and unique creator in GD history, all of his work in the levels have a lot of awesome details and effects, and I love this in his levels, is my favorite creator! ❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
@@ayuu7 Mas é claro q eu ia comentar né mano, kkkkkk. É o Mindcap, e claro, o Devin2003, meu criador favorito do GD, e pelo jeito, é o criador q o Mindcap admira muito, kkkkkk.
In my opinion,i think Devin Is the most free creator on gd,he Is not a slave of the level standards,he Just.....doesn't care....he just uses the editor as a canvas for his paintings. Devin is just built different.
Zylenox levels are like the story mode of an fps game. You walk into it and expect a good, high-quality, detailed story. Devin’s levels are like the online ffa pvp severs. It’s wild and unpredictable, unorthodox and sometimes completely madcap. You never know what you’re gonna get. At the end of the day, it’s all about which one you enjoy. A grounded, solid theme or a completely crazy unorthodox level that’s just as enjoyable as the other.
When baking a cake, zylenox adds the ingredients very meticulously and carefully to craft the perfect cake. Devin just adds shit if he feels like it and doesn’t care about the final product because he had fun adding random shit
You know. When he said that he didn't want people to like his work and to be disgusted by it and of him expressing himself of making these types of conversational and weird levels that he does in his own ways like a diary. I do give my respect to him of him accomplishing those goals and of what he does. Even though, some of his work is really graphic and gross to me. I still give my respect to what Devin does. 👍🏼 - Very great explanatory and entertaining video you made MindCap. You said a lot of things very well to put out of the questions of what Devin does in the GD Community. He's certainly an interesting creator. In the good and the bad side of things at the same time for us people on how we feel about what he does and makes.
I really appreciate this video, both zyenlox and devin are my favorite creators and its really cool to see them both discussed with this level of analysis.
i gotta say this was a brilliant video and has opened my eyes to Devin as a creator. for the longest time i was judging him based off Red Rooms and yes, especially that infamous “snuff scene.” i still kinda think that level is mindless edgelord garbage, and is a prime example of how NOT to use shock horror, but the other levels shown in this video seem seriously interesting. dare i say i think maybe he’s grown and improved as a creator lol. definitely will be giving him another look :)
There's that whole saying of "Good artists borrow, great artists steal," from Picasso, and I feel like the former really applies to Devin in an intentional way. I feel like he's intentionally breaking all these rules so that other creators would be inspired enough to "steal" from him in the sense of breaking every established "rule" of how to make a GD level. Honestly inspires me with a level I'm making when I'm somewhat trying to play by the rulebook when really I should think about how I can push the envelope a little.
Devins levels remind me of a game called cruelty squad in a way, where everything is just going against being intuitive or normal at all in a way that makes me love it
Ya know, i want rob to make the rating standards more like this. People can get rated levels just building what they like, not something that is "rate worthy". Sure there still will be standards like no rating those recent tab levels, it still has to have some effort put in, but you could just create whatever you like.
As a person who did graffiti for a while i think comparing devins levels to graffiti is perfect Both have a random vibe and can be interpreted as anything and can work as commentary on whatever is goin on at the time for the person who made it or in general
Devin's honestly one of my favorite creators ever lol. The thing about his levels is not only does he go all-out with the themes and decoration but the gameplay itself is very odd and unconventional, works yet is creative in the most unique way, which makes playing his levels even weirder as a whole. Not only that but I also strongly agree with what he stands for, as don't get me wrong I love Robtop, but creators concern themselves way too much with stupid shit like creator points so seeing someone going against that norm and just *creating* is a massive W for art and proves truly that only you should be concerned with what you want to put out if you want expression in its purest form. Wanna put your OC in there despite it literally making no sense? Fuck norms, it's in the level now. It's so chaotic yet so beautiful at the same time. Side note: Devin's fav movie (the one that inspired "Man Man") is apparently disturbing AF XD.
Devin is a true artist. He's bold, controversial, and talented, and proves that the GD editor is indeed an art form. That's not to say his levels don't make me feel queezy from time to time, as he said, he wants you to hate them
Devin is the most unique creator in the gd community no doubt. His psychopathy levels are really disturbing which is the best thing about his levels. He doesnt want people to like his levels but he wants them to be disgusted by them.
4:08 slight nitpick, what youre describing here is street art! graffiti is often done for the same kinds of reasons but particularly *has the artists name* attributed to it, either as a tag or as the only focus of the art piece. street art is simply an art piece, graffiti is "getting up" with your name. either way tho this is honestly a really good comparison
