We take the R53 Mini Cooper S out for a spin and ponder - What makes a car fun? Fun to own, fun to drive? In fact, what makes a drivers car full stop?
Which elements of a car really add to the experience of car ownership and make it fun? Is it the Engine, the Gearbox, the steering, the noise, the handling, the looks or the layout?
Can a FWD car be as much fun as a RWD car? When it comes to fun on the public roads, what really matters?
There is such a variety of fun cars available, we try and understand what it is that makes for a fun car experience and discuss which elements really matter to us at OVERTAKE.
Finally, how do you like your cars? Do you like small, light, agile, pure driving experiences? Or perhaps you favor a large beautiful GT car to crush motorways in!

Really enjoyed this video, best of luck with your channel. My 2005 MINI R50 (I've owned it since new) makes me smile every time I drive it. I've upgraded it over the years and it makes about 140HP at the wheels (which doesn't sound like much, but that's more than a stock R53), but it FEELS fast and it handles like a dream, and that's all that matters.

I didn't care too much for the Mini until I drove one. Then I just simply had to buy one. They depreciate something shocking so I picked up a great full spec R56S for a bargain. Other cars have come and gone from my fleet over the years, including some V8 muscle cars and a Porsche, and the Mini waves at them with it's silly grin on its face as they depart. This thing puts a smile on my face everytime I take it out, it's like taking a naughty happy puppy for a walk. Even here in Oz driving thousands of Km across the country it's a far better long distance car than you would think. Goes quick enough to embarrass many things far more expensive too. I like my cars but love my Mini like a goofy pet dog. Preference for the Cooper S over the JCW tho, just add a decent exhaust and you're done (Yes, avoid the N14 engine).

How come you prefer mcs over a jcw one? I have an r56s n18 myself but I must admit I search the ads for a n18 jcw from time to time.

@@I.o.a.n.n.i.s Personally I find the suspension too harsh on the JCW and I prefer the auto. If I only used the MINI to blast around in the mountains for a couple of hours on a weekend then I'd take the JCW but as a daily driver the S is an easier car to live with for my type of environment. Plus here in Au the price difference can be quite significant and using that extra coin to add coil overs and mild engine upgrades to an S you can end up with a 'better' car than a JCW for less money.

@@CathodeRayNipplez I see your points. Truth is, the extra hp and the upgraded brakes make me a bit jealous. Other than that you are right. Enjoy your little devil😉

The Lotus Exige Thrill was EASILY the most fun I've had in a car. The super charger right behind your ear, light weight, corners flawlessly, you can take a corner with maximum grip or drift the shit out of it and it just goes "okay! No problem!" I drove that car on the Silverstone track. Then my tutor for the day showed me how it was done, drifting in the rain past ferraris carrying so much speed he paased them on the straights. Awesome day!! Personally I like corners so any car with part way decent suspension is fun to me. An engine worth bragging about is a huge bonus. Also I don't really like attention so I want a car that is understated. I used to drive my Avensis like a total twat and got away with it because it was so ugly no one wanted to look at it. My Accord type S was fun to drive but got too much attention so I got done in the ULEZ and got a speeding ticket. It's a grandads car, but a beautiful one so I used to get "I like your car" every five minutes. I thought it would be invisible like the others. Nope.

Great to see a new film from you! High quality as always - love it! I'm with you on the analogue experience - i feel that this connects with you as a driver in a way a more assisted car never could. But as you say, fun - or maybe rather enjoyment - can be had in a completely different car. I wouldn't say my 406 Coupé is fun as such, but i really do enjoy driving it! I think in either case, the engine plays a big role. I can't think of many cars with "bad" engines, that are still considered fun or enjoyable. The DeLorean might fit in here, but i struggle to think of others? Having so many ways to make a car enjoyable gives me hope for the future. The automakers just need to remeber that "fun" can be part of the equation too!

Thanks for your continued support, it means a lot! Cars can be fun to own as much as they are to drive, but a good engine can definitely make anything fun. As you say, hopefully the manufactures find plenty of ways to keep us enthusiasts happy, if not, we will just have to keep the older stuff running for a lot longer!

My wife used to have an R53 One (convertible) 10 years ago. I'd jump into that from my E46 330i Msport and have an awesome time nipping to the shops etc, the handling was pin-sharp, fantastic. The engine was lame but the handling more than made up for it!

My answer without watching: low weight and revvy engine (only petrol) coupled with short-throw gearbox.

That sounds like a very good recipe for fun! I wholeheartedly agree about the engine, I've always had most fun with petrol, even with low power figures as long as it likes to rev.

Thanks! It's either just a regular GoPro or a Delkin Fat Gecko depending on the camera used in the shot. The Delkin triple can handle a mirrorless DSLR pretty well!
