I agree. I believe, instead of focusing so much on mechanics of skating with young players, they should be forced to perform specific skating patterns with lots of reps.Things will fall into place. If they’re able to control their edges, pivot quickly, and they’re fast with a high compete level, thats what matters. I took my son out of a power skating camp in Quebec that we had paid for and committed to. He doesn’t need it. Money better spent here at home renting ice, having fun and honing skills.

I agree entirely that the questionable nature if skating lessons actually helps a player. It's about feel, posture, and the player's ability to be stable at a fast pace. The stride is something I see focused on so much however if you don't have the posture you won't be able to hold your edge, stick handling at speed more or less shoot a puck. Balance and control is my biggest focus, everything can come after.

I have to agree that the obsessions with power skating has gone too far, and the commercial aspect of it seems to take the priority over any potential benefits. Would be nice to see a video on what a better approach would be, especially for youth players who aren’t very strong on their edges or have a great balance?

very interesting...i feel that i can skate better than lot of people when i'm out playing shinny but i'm a lower than average hockey player.... however i can make the odd rush and defensive play and i think that's because of my skating ability........on the other hand i see lot of pretty bad skaters or people that look unstable on their skates but they do pretty well with the puck. they shoot much better than me too ....(but i spend probably 3 times as much effort/time on my skating vs stickhandling and shooting) maybe because i don't really like stickhandling and shooting as much as the skating itself...

Yes, you're hitting right on our point. Skating well is great, but if you can play and understand the game, you don't need to be the best skater, necessarily (within reason of course).

Is the answer simply to be where you need to be on ice? Doesn't matter how you got there, but you are in position when you need to be?
