I didn't mention anything about "up" (somebody else did) my take is that it doesn't matter if you lock something in a steel safe and bury it underground, if a cat wants it the cat gets it.

Attach your tree to the ceiling. It's the only way we could keep a tree up when we had our Siamese. We changed our ornaments to styrofoam balls covered in satin so there was no breakage. The balls were a very good idea after we got a golden retriever puppy who insisted on picking up every ball that hit the floor.

Now I understand why my mum always put my cats in the basement for annual Christmas parties, and parties in general. The noise and visual stimulation is too much for cats to handle. I learned very early on why we put fragile ornaments on high branches: so cats, and fascinated little kids, don't break them.

We found handmade wooden balls and old fashioned tin strips of tinsel! The cats can't hurt them and the tree has a wonderful Victorian feel.

I had an orange tabby named Sammy when I was growing up and he LOVED Christmas! I told my father that we needed to secure the tree..he didn't listen.. Sammy loved climbing and hanging out in the tree, if you tried to take him out he'd growl...every Christmas it's a little bitter sweet because it makes me think of him and miss him terribly.

I'm so grateful to this episode of Simon's Cat Logic. I'm living with my mom right now saving money for my upcoming wedding and apartment. She brought in some Holly and put it right next to my cat's food dish. I didn't think much of it until I watched this video and was informed that it was potentially poisonous to my fur baby. I moved that Holly away from my cat so fast and explained why I did it. My mom was so happy that we avoided a trip to the vet.

I absolutely love this channel. The cartoons remind me of so many cats I've had the pleasure of meeting or being owned by. I especially love the one in this one about climbing the Christmas tree. When I was 5, my mom had a cat who would do that anytime we left the house. My father's solution was to run chicken wire around the tree and nail the ends to the wall on either side. Our tree stayed upright and nicely decorated the rest of the season lol

My family have to use artificial trees due to pine allergies. Years ago, our cat (who clocked in at about seventeen pounds at the time), decided to climb the tree and warped the branches so severely by his weigh that we had to replace it the next year. He's now retired from tree destruction and now leaves that job up to our new mischievous duo.

Our Benni ADORED everything about Xmas!! His first Xmas he manged to haul down the new artificial tree. It was a very dramatic event. He was SO proud of himself! He liked to crawl into a pile of artificial branches and suck on the "needles". Apparently the plastic had a special, festive flavor. He also liked to suck on the old tree light bulbs. Dad did his best to stop THAT behavior. And the boxes...oh heavenly joy!!! Boxes and paper, tape and ribbons...Xmas was designed for his raptures. He even loved playing in snow and on the frozen pool.

I had such a weird cat. Geeko loved sitting under the tree and just to look at the lights. We had a plush nativity scene which she loved to play with when we were away, cause she knew she wasn't supposed to, and one time we came back and found the shepherd and Joseph swapped, a camel was in Mary's place and she was over with a wise man, and baby Jesus was in his usual spot, for her, of under the dishwasher.

I feel it necessary to say that all the dietary restrictions that the cat expert mentioned should be applied towards dogs aswell. Also, it would seem that humans have the the ability rare to safely digest chocolate, as it is also hughly toxic to dogs.

I've watched that one, and understood it as a public service announcement not to overfeed your dog(s). What I was saying is that chocolate is one of the many human foods that are out right toxic to dogs. Grapes and raw onions also make that list, but there are others that make the list, but there are dozens of others.

Basically anything but humans, though some humans can't tolerate the theobromide (the cause of chocolate toxicity and a naturally-occurring compound in cocoa).

This year will be the first tree we have attempted since (5 years ago) we brought our Sibe Buddy home. It should be interesting!! Our old man Max loves the Christmas tree as he has a great place to curl up on the tree skirt.

I got my Mokuba at Christmas 14 years ago. The next Christmas he decided to climb the tree while I was asleep. I awoke to a crash, and a large number of the glass ornaments I had spent so long painting we're broken. I switched to a small tree I could put on the table for several years after that. These days Mokuba lets the tree be, so I can have a regular size one again. Mokuba was an unexpected Christmas gift to myself. A friend knew someone who had found abandoned kittens and had bottle fed the litter. My friend got one, and she talked me into taking the last little runt. I will never regret it! He was so tiny when I got him, but he grew to be tall and long, twice the size of his sister. I always say I got the cat I was supposed to get. He's got a strange personality, but we live together well. My mom is convinced not having a mother is one reason for his strange personality, and maybe so, but has definitely had tons of love and care since he was four weeks old. My best friend in the world!

I have 59 years experience of cats, and make a point of adopting black rescue cats as they take longer to re-home, which is ridiculous as they are just as lovely, and often are particularly affectionate! The only ones I’ve had that aren’t black, are the homeless ones that turn up in my garden looking for a home. They are all loyal and loving but the bravest and kindest one I ever rescued was a little black feral girl with a slightly deformed nose, who never left my side after I tamed her, and was always cheerful and happy, even when she got old and lost her sight. She had to be put to sleep almost a year ago, and I still find myself crying.......she is sorely missed. BLACK CATS ARE BEAUTIFUL

I had to laugh when Nicky Trevorrow said to put chrismassy things "out of cat's reach." And where would that be please ; ) My house is my cats' temple, they can reach everywhere and be sure they do! One of them has a thing with doors and drawers. Whenever she comes by one she has to open it. So "out of cat's reach" hasn't happened here yet but I love it.

I guess we got real lucky with Snowball. She was a SPCA rescue, all white, domestic short hair. We've had her over 6 years now. She doesn't climb the tree, pretty much leaves the ornaments alone; but, she does love to sleep/nap under the tree ON the tree skirt - so we try to leave a space for her amongst the presents.

Or put eye screws at the ceiling and tie the tree upright with strong cords. I know folks who had to do that, as every day, the cat climbed and toppled the tree when they went to work.

oh, they were wide spaced eyes, heavy and wide base, and tied tightly and it didn't move enough to slosh the water out of the base when it was a real tree. A cement block steadied the artificial tree in the same wide base. The little blighter was resourceful, though the artificial tree was harder for him to climb.

Try heavy duty monofilament (30 to 50 us pounds) tied to a hook above the tree, almost invisible, and it helps protect it from kitties and kiddies.

My cat loved Christmas trees when she was a kitten. And she behaved herself too - she would just climb up, lay in the branches, and look out the window. She never even messed with the ornaments. Mommy's good girl...

We don't put up christmas trees anymore, mostly because there are no more children in the house so our decorations are simpler, but the first time one of our cats, Milo, saw the tree he was incredibly fascinated by the twinkling lights. He sat there just staring at the tree for nearly an hour. Then he fell asleep under the tree. Thankfully he never tried to climb it.

When I was a child we tried our best to keep our cat away from the christmas tree. ( he is the reason I fell in love with cats! So smart but at the same time so silly!) . We tried putting up a small fence around the tree, giving the tree a really heavy anchor. Trying to make sure that he was always in a different room. He always found a way to climb it though. Almost became a Christmas tradition to try and keep him from climbing it just to suddendly hear the tree fall over!

Our first cat was always good with the Christmas tree. Our next batch of kittens were curious, but luckily we had the baby gates from when my brothers were younger to keep them away. Good thing, too, as they were climbers when they were babies. If you stood still for more than a few moments, they'd jump on your legs and shimmy up to your shoulders. I could only imagine what they'd do to our tree!

Ah yes, for a brief moment this year I thought I could finally have a Christmas tree. Instead I rescued a pregnant cat and decided to keep the one black kitten. Like Teddy, he is a fluffy, adorable and constantly exploring. I think the tree this year will be a pile of cat treats and toys, since the felines out number me 5 to one. I get the joy of a kitten for Christmas.

I grew up with 6 cats and while they never tried to climb the tree, they loved to try and slide on the tree skirt which nearly toppled the tree a few times. There was also a fateful year when we had bell decorations. Not the best choice, as they apparently loved to play with the bells

I've had cats for 60 years. We learned how to keep the tree up. You tend to put the tree in the same place every year, so install a hook in the ceiling (paint it the same color as the ceiling, so it's unobtrusive) and tie a string from near the top of the tree to the hook. No matter how many cats or how much they weigh, the tree won't topple. Also, don't use glass ornaments.

Watching your kitten is just as important as they say during the Hollidays... my kitten was climbing our tree (under my supervision and it was almost her bedtime) and she fell down the tree in such a way that the tinsel completely wrapped around her neck when she hit the ground. I ran to her and had to try for a good 20 seconds to get it off of her neck and she was basically choking to death.. she was fine after the ordeal but I was traumatized haha. Needless to say the tree was taken down

My little black cat (Poe) on his first Christmas also destroyed my tree, climbed all the way to the top and knocked it over, broke most of the ornaments. I have a new kitten this year and she hasn't seen a Christmas tree before, and she is best friends with Poe

I guess I was lucky, none of my 3 cats wanted to climb our trees. When we go to a friend's house for their annual Halloween party, one room has a sign on the door, "Do not open, Scaredy Cat inside!" We all honor the kitty's space!

Thank goodness our cat has never been tempted to climb our tree. Especially considering we have several vintage glass ornaments. She'll hang out _underneath_ it, but she's never climbed it or tried to bat at the low-hanging ornaments

a lot of the beginning reminded me of a cat that belonged to a roomate i had in the past. If given the opportunity the cat would eat tinsile. it ate the draw strings of a few of the blinds, and if you bring chocolate ice cream into the apartment it'd try to climb you (literally) while attempting to get to the ice cream.

When celebrating Christmas at my dad's many years ago, his cat jumped into a Christmas tree with burning candles, topping it over. It was pandemonium. Burning tree, broken glass ornaments, panicking humans and a terrified cat. When I got my own cat, I secured the top of the tree with a string to a nearby window, got plastic ornaments and electric fairy lights. The cat I have now has been declawed by some (insert very rude word) people in Spain so she can't climb the tree but I still do all these things. Better safe than sorry.

The floor if our old house are not level so we use a stone from great grandma's house to counter weight the tree, which is also attached to as strong hook in the ceiling by fishing line. Big presents are a fountain for drinking or a sheep skin.

Cat Christmas Tree Safety Top Tips: 1) Nothing breakable on the lower 2' of the tree. 2) Safety chain: Attatch tree to nearby wall to prevent the "timber" effect.

Our family had a weird cat. She was just never interested in ANY of the typical cat stuff like climbing the tree, playing with cat toys, or anything, cat like at all. Even when she was a kitten, we gave he cat toys and she had absolutely no interest. She would hunt live prey, but when she was around the house, she was just, "The Cat" (And yes. That's what her name was. "The Cat". Haha!). She just didn't... play, chase things, or do anything people describe cats doing. She wasn't even that fond of being petted. But she wasn't sick or anything It was just... how she was. She was perfectly fine with the Christmas tree and stuff because the tree with all it's tempting stuff on it would have been too much effort for her.

"TEMPTED" to climb the Christmas tree? Our little hurricane, Felix would go to the very TOP of of our (artificial) tree. We've a newer one now, which isn't as climbable. Oh, and our Tortie, Scooter has been known to drag away the tree skirt for use as a bed XD

Lol every year atleast 2 of my cats climb the tree, they don’t knock down anything, just hide and climb. And we also got each of them a stocking and put cookies or milk or toys in it!

My cat's thought: Humph! Random, weird, decorations invading my house! This stuff is for hoomans! This way below my level! My cat's words translated to hooman: STOP WITH YOUR DIDLY-DADLING AND COME OPEN THIS DOOR AND DO WHAT I SAY!!! P.S I got my cat a catnip plant for Christmas. It made me so happy to see his excitement :)

I've noticed a bit of a fad for making homemade Christmas baubles this year. Nothing wrong with that, but a common variety includes pinning beads and/or sequins to polystyrene baubles with sewing pins. Imagine the damage that could cause with a cat (or even a young child) around.
