I was a welder while I was in college and I can tell you that 316 is not more expensive than 304 stainless. They are almost identical in properties (weldability, machinability, hardness, toughness, etc.) and price. The only more expensive varieties of stainless are the hardenable ones like 17-4 that are used for all sorts of strength critical applications. So I don't think that price is really much of a factor when it comes to stainless steel. At least in the 300 series

@prnuvsharma55 - Yes, particularly the end of 90s one. Its list price was $1,700 but I bought mine for $1,075 in December of 2000 and it still looks and works like the day it was bought, which is to say perfectly. I do have more expensive watches which I rotate, but that nearly 24 years old one very frequently manages to squeeze itself in, disturbing the rotation order. 🙂

I have an Orient Bambino as well, in black, stunning in the light what I will say is that with the domed mineral glass, it scratches VERY easily. No-one notices it, but I notice it which is annoying. So be careful out there with door frames and wrestling on the ground with your cousins at Christmas guys... It is a beautiful watch though, looks great with a button down shirt.

Great video! All of these distill down to an acronym I use - MMDM - Movement, Materials, Design and Marketing. Movement encompasses in-house vs off the shelf and levels of complication. Materials are pretty self explanitory and you covered nicely. Design covers the look and physical feel of the watch. Marketing covers all the intangibles - feelings about brand, history, celebrity endorsement, rarity, etc. Some folks care only about the first 3, others place more value on the last. YMMV.

That's a very nice watch, though your company should appreciate you more - 45 years is mindboggling. They should get you an Omega at least ;) My own company recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. Came here because a friend of mine is really into watches and just purchased some antique ones during an auction. Before that, I knew watches could be expensive, but holly shit do people spend a lot on them. So, I came here to try and understand what the big whoop with watches (I for one have a simple digital Casio, formerly owned by my dad in the 90's and a pocket watch that was inherited to me by a late relative), since I'm not into it and don't really know anything about them beyond "rolex are expensive". But now I'm starting to see what people like about watches. I don't think it is for me, but... The more you know.

I think anything above 1000 dollars you are paying for the name....I understand that Heritage is important, but, a 700 dollar Tissot is a well-built watch with a great history. A 10,000 Rolex is a well-built watch with a Heritage as well. But the quality is similar, maybe slightly better than a Tissot. But is is over 10 times better?
@katalysis
@katalysis 5 лет назад
The craftsmanship, materials used, and labor involved are all very noticeably more costly between a Rolex and Tissot, or even more apparent, a Grand Seiko and a Tissot, but in most cases not an order of magnitude more costly.
@mfmf100

Luxury doesn’t work on a linear scale like that. It’s more like you pay 2x for 10% better, then 2x again for 10 percent better than that.

I’d say that in general you are correct. I’m not a watch maker, but with few exceptions, in house movements all function the same as ETA. It is unusual for the industry to see ground breaking innovations like the Defy Lab Zenith has created with single-piece oscillator which takes the place of some 30+ components in a balance spring system. That is a unique case where an in house movement has significant advantages over an ETA. Cheers Capt. Mick

Excellent video, Teddy! I used to question this myself until I did research on what makes a Rolex expensive, for example. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that they smelt their own gold in a Rolex-owned kiln, run in-house laboratories staffed by scientists and engineers who experiment with new materials, and essentially create everything in-house in a compound more highly fortified than Fort Knox. R&D isn't cheap and neither is paying for cutting-edge security technology. Needless to say, that research opened my eyes to the inner workings of what seems to be a living, breathing city of watchmaking.

Casio F-91W, bought mine for about 9$ and it's about 0,5 second faster each week compared to atomic time. That is precision you won't find in most automatic watches for 100-1000 times more. And If I had money I would buy one of A. Lange & Söhne as they are beatiful watches, put on my left wrist, and F91-W would be on my right to check time.

@treedillinger5801

There’s also the deeper implied or perceived “value” behind factors you mention such as price, exclusivity and history. In the very early days of watches (pocket watches first...sundials before that) these were tools that gave a select group of humans godlike powers. Having an accurate tool for measuring time when nobody else did would give you a strategic advantage as well as credibility. Such a tool was reserved for a king or general. There’s also strong symbolism in trying to do the thing we can’t: control time itself. ...eventually pocket watches became wristwatches and they became mass produced. But the art of watchmaking didn’t simply stop, high end pieces continued to be developed. For those who could afford them they became a hobby as well as a symbol of wealth...in a way it’s an attempt to recapture the exclusivity of being one of the few people alive to own such a special tool that existed in the early days. Companies try to make watches that give people that special feeling in different ways. Rolex uses gold, and literally uses a crown as a logo. They back it up with tough, reliable, accurate pieces. Patek and the like focus on movements, decoration and complications to capture the feeling of exclusivity. Certain master watchmakers produce 5 watches or less a year and sell them for millions a piece. The “lesser” brand do 2 things. 1) try to offer more bang per buck than the high end companies or 2) simply copy the design of higher end watches. Not to be dismissive or oversimplify it- but most of these companies are just making watches that look like a Submariner or Calatrava 🤷🏻‍♂️ ...they’re still trying to tap into that special feeling, but for a much lower price.

I'll tell you something interesting about human behavior regarding watches. When I was 16 years old I was in juvy for a petty marijuana charge. While there we spent 23 hours a day alone in a cell on a block with about 20 other kids in their own cells. First thing I noticed was how precious it was to simply know the time. When we were let out I noticed some of the kids had cheap kids watches from Wal-Mart and I envied them. Turns out the way to get the watch was you had to be there for more than 3 weeks and become honor rank by completing various tests and displaying good behavior. You also gained the ability to use a radio and have one extra rec time. Needless to say I spent about a month inside and I worked hard to get that watch. And after I had it other kids on the block would constantly wake me up asking me what time it was. I was looked up to for just having the power of time.

@gilbertoflores7397
@gilbertoflores7397 5 лет назад
@Magister Ludi why should depreciation matter to you if you want a watch. The fact that they cost less used would mean you can then get one at a crazy steal. And if you're a watch lover, you'd have that watch for years, without every intending to sell it. If you want a watch that super well made and very accurate for an affordable price what can beat Grand Seiko? If you have to use you're life's saving to buy a Rolex, and need to eventually sell it down the line, maybe you shouldn't be buying a Rolex, because you probably can't afford it. Buy what you can afford, a watch at the end of the day is not an investment, but a waste of money. They're for people with disposable income to "dispose" of they extra money, it's a toy for men kind of how we waste money on cars and clothes. You should buy them because you like them and not intended to get money back from them. So a GS should the best choice for most people when it comes to buying the best watch for the smallest amount of money possible when spending multi-thousands of dollars for a watch.
@gilbertoflores7397
@gilbertoflores7397 5 лет назад
@Magister Ludi you can buy a GS spring drive for under 5 grand, and 3.5k when they're on sale, which they do go on, during the new year, even cheaper used. All watches depreciate, you can point out a fee that are hot right now, but why are you buying a watch just to own for less than a year. I buy my watches to have for life. And if you're talking about cost of service, you should know that servicing a watch is kind of a scam. Watch makers know that you can easily go 20 plus year before they need to be serviced I'd it's a high end watch. I think GS says you don't need to get them serviced for almost a person's lifetime/a crazy long time like 15-20 years. But to service a Rolex it's like 500-1000 nowadays anyways. So you'll be spending a lot for either servicing. But in the way of cars, all cars lose their value(to point out the super rare occasions where the value goes up is a stupid way of looking at the market) [it's mainly for vintage or limited editions, which doesn't really apply for watches much, as watches are always limited editions]. But the purpose was to point out that you're losing money buying technology/mechanical tools. The difference would also be that you would only ever need to buy one car, as a good watch will last you're entire lifetime. So if I was to buy a car, I wouldn't care how much of its value it retains because I'd drive it and it'd still get me to where I need to go, be reliable and still look aesthetically pleasing as the day I got it. That all that should matter, if you like it, you can afford it, and you plan on having it for a super long time. Value retention and servicing cost should be the last thing you consider when buying a watch, if that's what you have to think about when buying it, then you probably shouldn't be buying that watch; because one, you can't really afford it. Or that's not really the watch you want to get, if you plan of selling it later, and buy the real watch you want. After having a GS, I know that I don't want or need anything else; And if I do want some other watch, I'm not going to sell off my GS to pay for the other one. I'll just buy it and keep it to go along with the GS.

Hamilton Khaki Field handwind is my daily. You get a robust field watch with an ETA mechanical movement, sapphire crystal, and excellent attention to detail, with huge history behind it, and the price tag is barely $300

Great video! Just a little sidenote, you could have provided some extra information about plexiglass. The vintage Rolexes that use plexiglass weren't cheap I think ;)

For me the "musts" are 1) sapphire or hardlex 2) stainless 316L , Titanium, or solid gold case 3) Japanese, Swizz, German quartz or automatic 4) 3 atm water resistance for a dress watch and 10+ for sports watch 5) comes with a quality bracelet or strap. Examples: Seiko SARB033 and 035, Tissot day/date automatic, Phoibos PY007 Dive Watch. I don't like getting a watch that costs about $500 and the bracelet has hollow end links and a pressed clasp, for example.

My pick would be a combo of Timex and Seiko. You can get a full set: beater, every day, chrono, sporty, diver and dress for less then a $1K

I think that Grand Seiko May give the best value for money. If you aren’t concerned about selling your watch later GS is nearly unbeatable with multiple offerings in mechanical, Spring Drive and high-accuracy quartz. Rolex is likely the best buy if you either think you will sell it later or will sell it later, as you get a great watch with high resale value.

My Seagull d819.459. I consider it to be a good value for money - elegant, nice looking watch, ss case, a sapphire crystal, good movement ST2130 (ETA 2824-2 clone) for under 200 US dollars shipped! My copy runs +2 sec/day.

I think that the Parnis GMT has a huge value for the money, at least in the specifications. I been wearing one for about 6 months. The only problem is that you will never have your money back, you need to think twice if you really like the watch before buying, because no one is going to buy a used Parnis.

I have a Longines Conquest Automatic 300m which I think is really great value for money. It retails for around $1000 and is as accurate as any of the Rolex watches out there.

What makes a expensive watch: - Case material - Glass material - Movement
@smashexentertainment676
@smashexentertainment676 3 года назад
Entirely wrong. Here are examples: you designed the watch and ordered pre-made parts from different factories in China, ETA or Miyota movement and just put them together. That's almost as cheap as it gets. You make cases and dials, but outsource the movement like Miyota or ETA. Same materials, but that'd be a bit more expensive. You make entire watch with your own in-house movement at your factory. Still same materials, but the price will go 6-digit easily if not more. That is almost exactly what Richard Mille does btw. Now imagine you make not only one, but have a production line to make 50 000 watches a year. Then the cost of all equipment and its maintenance, factory rent, employee salary, profit etc. from one watch you can divide by 50 000. And bring your product to the customer for a reasonable price. That's what most brands do. It's called economy of scale. That's the main reason why some watches are extremely expensive. And why you have GS at such high quality for such a low price.

@@smashexentertainment676 so I wasn’t entirely wrong it all comes down to the materials lol

I just brought a fucda watch because i loved the minimalist dial. Made out of stainless steel and water resistant. It has a thick rubber strap that is great looking. It is quartz but looks great. It only cost 10 dollars !!

Not an expert, by any means, however; my thoughts on a watch which has the best value would be the Orient Blue Ray 11. Great quality watch with excellent specifications and for not a lot of money.

Most value for the money? I'd argue the Helm Vanuatu. It's an ISO-certified diver good to 300m (which means each unit has been pressure-tested to 375m), with a sapphire crystal and ceramic bezel, Seiko NH35 movement, and generous lume on the hands. It's an amazing tool watch for $300.

A brand like Frederique Constant etc. could reveal the tricks of the very expensive brands who want to tell us, that the quality and design of Rolex and co are 100 times better so you have to pay 100x more money for it. I like Patek and co but i am not so dump to believe the price of this watches would only be based on true values. If you are a real watch lover and expert, you do not only evaluate the price and the stable value of a watch. You have to see the quality and the beauty of a watch. Brands like Grand Seiko or Frederique Constant etc. making watches in a very high quality and a good design for a good price. Nobody can tell me, that the quality and design of Rolex etc. are 100 times better. The image of Rolex etc. ist the expensive part. The very smart trick is, to scarce the watches to hold the price in a high level but this is not a true value, not a sign of quality, not a sign of good design. It's a simple trick. Do you really think a Rolex clock work 100 times longer as a Seiko or Frederique Constant etc. ? If you see watches as an investment then you have to buy Rolex but if you love watches and don't want to pay for an image to upgrade yourself, then you are able to see that there are a lot alternatives to Rolex or Patek etc.
