Americans supply two-thirds of the world’s plasma, supporting an industry that relies on vulnerable donors in need of cash.
Editor’s note: Our graphic at 1:41 misstates the amount of protein in plasma. It should be 7%, not 9%. Our apologies.

As long as the blood seller are offered fair compensation, they’re informed on where the blood is going, what would happen to their body and the blood, all the pros and cons.... Then it’s not a bad business. We always need more blood for the development of new drugs and treatments anyway, this way it would ensure a steady source of good quality blood.

They hook us up after making us wait a bit to get screened, and the whole process takes about an hour roughly. I always believe they should be paying the donors more. EVERY person that sticks you either just finshed training there at the center or are one of few that have stuck around a little while. These are not nurses or any registered medical professionals. They're entry level jobs and they don't pay them very well either. It's a crazy profitable business and they should be paying us all more. 40 dollars the first visit and 80 the second. negative effects? there are literaly none. people in need of blood/plasma can get it easier and people in harder financial situation can supplement their income, and because there is competition and ita not government doing it they strive for best price for both customers and donors and provide betyer quality service. I am 35 y old and donated blood at school in 2002 and they told me had Hepatitis C. It was very stressful and I was scared, but I guess donating is also a good way of checking if you are ok. I am fine now and illness is non active, antibodies. The big con is I can never give my blood away since that happened so its a bit sad. Just my 2 cents to the story.

I've donated plasma many, many times. Almost every single time the money went to my addiction. It completely fueled my addiction at some points. These places wouldn't survive if people had to take drug tests prior to donating. Your plasma does not transmit whatever is in your system....so they don't care. Doesn't matter to them if you use their money for street drugs. People nodding out in the waiting room is extremely common.

Plasma donation is not considered a blood donation, at least here in the US. They are 2 different things. We donate blood for free here as well, or perhaps a t-shirt or maybe a $10 gift card (in my experience), which I have done several times. I have not donated plasma yet, but I am considering it because I know it is needed. And honestly, considering the amount of profit the companies make selling people's plasma, the person giving the plasma probably should be re-imbursed. The issue is the big business aspect of the whole thing. But that's how it is here. So yes, I think considering the time involved (I would have to drive 45 minutes each way to most of the centers in my area) and the time spent donating, i think it's fair, at least in this country. But I do love Spain and respect their way of doing things! Also, you guys (and much of the rest of the world) have public healthcare, which makes a difference, I believe. Here we do not, unfortunately. Everything's for a profit here, sigh.

Something about this doesn't seem right, this scares me for some reason. They've taken out the selfless part of donations. @@supergleep9692 Selling definition is:- "give or hand over (something) in exchange for money." So yes, they're not donating. They're selling their plasma. Since it's illegal to sell body parts, companies try and get around this issue by saying they're compensating them for their 'time' and not plasma. The hard fact is that a large percentage of these people wouldn't have come to 'donate' without a monetary reward and that makes it sad. And the bigger risk? It opens up the door for Human organ trafficking. People can basically keep a bunch of people hostage and keep draining them for plasma every 3 days and since it's replenishable source it's a steady high income for these type of vile people.

I used to donate a lot back in the day... Until I went to the Dr. And they treated me like a drug addict because I had "track marks" after that day I completely stopped donating. Its not worth it when I gotta deal with that

Here in Italy it's free, a real donation, nowadays i can't donate because of health problems but they always treat you super well before and after the donation, they always offer you a nice breakfast too

I mean, I have mixed feelings on this. It's cool that people are being helped by this, however this is a business, and how many people are unemployed while doing this is so sad!

Is there any side effects to donating plasma? If not then this is a win win for sure

I wonder how many people missed the “supplies 2/3 of THE WORLDS plasma” and people say it’s bad that Americans get paid for it

I’ve always wanted to donate something, like my eggs, blood or plasma, but I have an autoimmune disease, and for blood donations, I’ve been told multiple times that I’m too small to do it. For my eggs, I just need to do more research.

Wow and to think In my school they make us donate blood... and we get the idea of “oh if I do this I get extra credit in my classes” because that’s what they tell you. Crazy

It isn't expensive, or inexpensive. It is simply the price agreed to by the buyer and seller.

Id argue its expensive because goverments arounf the world dont let people sell theyre own blood and plasma. I cant sell it so I dont donate.

People should be grateful that these people even want to give their plasma no matter if they’re getting paid or not still going somewhere and having a needle stuck into you two times a week For a lot of people is their worst nightmare

In my country sri lanka🇱🇰 there is no such a thing call selling blood we all donate it for free
@jbshbsskskhbs6713

They addressed the problem with that in the video, Countries that don't pay donors also don't have enough donations to cover their country's medical needs, because not enough people donate in their country. So most of the plasma you get in Sri Lanka was actually taken from Americans, who were paid (72% of world supply coming from America).

In sri lanka healthcare is sponsored by the government...so it makes sense to donate blood. But in the US you gotta pay for healthcare...so why let the companies make money out of your blood without getting something in return?

@@coolguy-hc8kt It might make sense, but not to enough people, because other countries aren't able to get enough people to donate, good will isn't incentive enough for most, as shown by the data.
