What Makes Casablanca So Great? - The Art of Propaganda

In this video, we discuss why Casablanca is considered a timeless classic. Set against the backdrop of WWII, this romance-drama distinguished itself amongst a crowded field of overt government-sponsored propaganda by choosing not to center its narrative on the war, instead focusing on the characters affected by it. Casablanca teaches its audience an important lesson about what it means to be a true patriot - a lesson that is as potent today as it was in 1942. And in so doing, it demonstrates that propaganda can be a force for good.

The airplane shot @ 17:32 which you inaccurately describe as '...the German plane flying over Rick's club..' was in fact--and reaffirmed several times in the movie a COMMERCIAL airliner that made DAILY trips to Lisbon. The part you seemed to have missed about this aircraft was its symbolism of ESCAPING the impending Nazi takeover. Hence the need for the all-too-often mentioned 'exit visas'. As for your reference to the searchlight, it too was at the airport. Something nearly ALL airports worldwide had in the days before electronic identification methods now employed.

Hi thanks for your comment! They're two different shots actually. I was referring to the shot at 17:29 which is, in fact, the plane that the Germans arrive in at the beginning of the film (it's one of the earliest scenes in the film, you can see the Germans get off the plane only moments later). Sorry for the confusion, probably shouldn't have placed another plane-flying shot right there but the preceding shot didn't last long enough and I just thought it made for a cooler visual haha.

in any analysis of this film everybody must keep in mind the very important idea that this film had already wrapped prior to pearl harbor. true, the editing wasn't finished until 1942, but that could only be done using what had already been filmed. in other words, this had not been started as a "patriotic film", but simply as a film noir drama and romance. also, it was filmed on somewhat of a shoestring budget, and it was actually a surprise to the studio that it became such a hit years after it was filmed (much more so then than it was in the 40's).

Hollywood, lead by Warner Bros., produced even overt documentary propaganda. See Frank Capra's series "Why We Fight".

All this eerily similar to things people say regarding the war in Ukraine today, everything from the obvious dross of those simping for foreign dictators, to the benign and ignorant who think that we can simply ignore conflicts and autocratic aggression in Eurasia.

5:59 Kind of a technical or grammatical note: a transformation in public opinion took place due to changes in culture, such as propaganda. It does not make sense the other way around because ‘changes in culture’ are changes in artistic works like movies, literature, fashion, and other plastic arts or changes in technology that produce new tools (often ushering new “ages” and “eras”). Having opinions can be reflected in culture but it is not necessarily so: for example, I can fully support guns in general but am not a part of “gun culture” unless I either contribute to something like a gun magazine or if I own or use them.

Enjoyed this incredible observation of my all time favorite picture-show. Please reveal any and all insights into the Green Mile. Not sure subject focus. Maybe life and impending death. I don’t know

Dude: Interesting content, but your thumping backing track makes it unwatchable.

Well, this is an entirely conventional movie, a totally unremarkable, hackneyed bit of Hollywood pablum. If you decide that its merits lie in it’s heavy handed jingoism, then ok. Not sure what you’re celebrating here.

Your desperate attempt and contrarianism mon ami, shows through for what it is, an attempt for recognition in supposedly original critical opinions. However instead of appear critical or intellectual, you simply appear a whiny brat wailing for everyone's attention.
