I love just about all of them but their most epic song/riff to me still remains "Ritual". Simply love everything about this song: The lo-fi guitar sound, the eerie intro with the spooky Dsus2 chords on top, the thick rhythm riff and drum groove at the verses and Papa's Gregorian chants on top (love the grunty P-bass sound below it!), the way it opens up melodically at the chorus with the hamonizing angelic vocals and the eerie organ makes this song sound really huge and catchy (kinda like a theme from some really spooky television show), the evil slide bridge part with the dim5's at the end accompanied by the demonic voice and the staccato snare (stakatakata!) and the epic, simple yet very emotional melodic solo with the octaves at the end. Simple brilliance all around! Amazingly balanced. Elizabeth and Infestissumam/Per Aspera ad Inferi are my second favourites (the sheer energy of these songs is beyond this world!).
Damn............lemme see..........how about........Ritual......and.......Year Zero. What really makes a ghost riff sound eerie and awesome was making a pilgrimage to the Catholic City of St. Louis on Easter Sunday several years ago to see Ghost play live.............
I think i know what you're talking about. As a 58 year old suicidal tendencies fan, I can appreciate the theater, showmanship and the choreography of ghost . They make me appreciate Meatloaf more
I've seen Ghost live 7 times now over 4 tours, their following amazes me more and more. There were literally old ladies (60's-late 70's) at the last show in Syracuse with Ghost shirts on.
Can't get enough of Uncle Ben at the moment, been following for ages but the videos recently have just been a cut above the rest! Keep up the work you damn legend! 🤘
Just for giggles I tuned that song down 4 semi-tones on my computer and I played along on my 7-string tuned down a half step (A# D# G# C# F A#) which is 4 half steps below the original tuning. Turns out that Ghost sounds good in basically any tuning
Love the Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night music at the beginning! One of the greatest side scrollers of all time! Would love to see some breakdowns of video game music. There’s a serious lack of that on the internet. Keep up the good work!
Excellent breakdowns, uncle Ben! Really love how Ghost combines different genres of music and keeps a very clean, yet eerie and evil sound. Ingeniously engineered music. Ghost prooves one does not have to grunt to sound ominous. I absolutely adore their subtle and dynamic sound. A lot of "new" metal lacks this: to me it's all out all the time, lacking any dynamics. The bass and rhythm parts of Per Aspera are played a little differently (les picking in between) but you did one hell of a job of breaking down what makes this band tick! Keep up the good work my man!
My favorite Ghost riff is from Cirice, which is also the song that first got me into the band. It's so powerful and menacing and I never tired of listening to it. Ghost is my second favorite band (Shinedown being my favorite)
You know what I'd love to see/hear? Just a fat jam session from you bro. Your tuts are tits, and you're really the only source of guitar tutorials i use, since everyone else seems to leave out a lot of the more intricate and detailed descriptions of what they're doing. Hope you have a happy Halloween bud.
Forget being hilarious and can actually tear ass on the guitar, you’re a damn good teacher, Ben! Not many “teachers” can get through to everyone but you have a way of explaining things very clearly. Props, dude! You’ve helped me out a bunch these last few year so - Thank you!! 👊🏻
Ghost has brought me back to listening to metal again. No dis to bands like Bullet for my Valentine, Chevelle, Breaking Benjamin, Korn, Slipknot,Disturbed, SOD, Deftones, Mudvayne ect. I still love those bands, but Ghost has a distinct feel about them that metal in general has lacked since the glory days when MetallicA,Anthrax, Slayer, MegadetH, and Pantera had metal at the top of the music world. And all of this is just opinion, but I think alot of people would agree, and mabe not 🤷♂️.
@M Via I do listen to alot of the newer stuff like Gojira, All that remains, ect. I'm not a huge listener of Opeth, they are ok, but the death metal/doom metal dosent hit the funny bone like the speed of thrash, or the heavy grooves of like Gojira. Give me a few new bands to check out. I like Trivium, Ten Years,Five Finger DP, bands like that. I dont hate the pop stuff, but I dont like how its took over since around the beginning of the millennium.
@M Via Well here is what I think with the upmost honestly. I think Mac Jones is going to start, LSU will have to change their whole defensive scheme if they prepared for Tua instead of Jones. But if they prepared for Mac Jones then you can surley bet that Tua comes in and wins the game. Either way LSU almost has to be prepared for both, and that's hard for a defensive coordinator, and a head coach. And with this game being at Bryant-Denny Stadium , Bama likley being ranked 2nd or 3rd behind LSU and mabe Ohio St in the initial Playoff rankings would give Coach Saban all the motivation he needs, cause he is going to drill it into their heads that the voters think that they are not good enough to be #1, and if they were to lose a game that they may not let em at the 4th spot. I think Bama wins the game, and they win by 10 (38-28) I think the Ov/Un is 85 or 90 total points, but I think Alabama's defense is starting to become one of the nation's best. I still think LSU's defense isnt as deep or talented as Bama's. So there is my thoughts, and I appreciate always discussing football with a fellow Bama fan. Can't wait till Nov 2, 2019 ,I think this one is probably going to be another great one. Rooooooooooooooooooooollllllll TIDE ROLL!
I love it when you cover Ghost stuff man . I haven't wanted to cover any other bands for over 16 months at least . I'm kinda shit as a player, but I put my heart into it . thanks Ben .
Hey Ben, I love your channel. You're an *awesome* teacher. Have you ever considered applying some acoustic treatment to your recording room to get rid of the echo?
19:15 That is Bach and it rocks It's a rock block of Bach That he learned in the school Called the school of hard knocks I bet "Cuntpunch Movement" was the working title for that song.
Ok. Show was good. Ass was wobbled, taint was tickled. However, the new Gouls playing on the hagstroms sound a lot different than the old Gouls who played the Gibson RDs
They're great if you aren't so far up your own ass that you think other people will think you're a poser for not exclusively listening to kvlt black metal
I like more what they've become than what they were... they took the devil-y thing too seriously early on IMO. Now they do a great job combining good musicality with the ability to cleverly parody their own shtick. Check out the "episodes" on YT... they're hilarious.
There's only two RU-vid teachers that explain music theory so that my little mind can comprehend. Uncle Ben and Justin Sandercoe. Many of the others will just say what it is, and you're on your own to figure it out. Rick Beato is another great one in breaking down, but that aimed towards a much higher music theory audience. Same with Adam Neely. A brilliant musician with a very high music IQ that is targeting the advanced audience. Uncle Ben get's down to our level and makes it make sense. Fucking magic man!
Check out Signals Music Studio. Found him a few weeks ago and he explains things in a way I understand. He will also explain things by playing it or creating a song. Best guy I’ve found so far amongst many other good ones.
I remember reading about the first Ghost riff, and how although he wasn't particularly a heavy metal-type person, Tobias felt he'd stumbled upon the most "evil" sounding riff ever written and they just *had* to record it. Then an entire theatrical act grew almost immediately from that, so they could "look" the part to match what they wrote. Kinda blew my mind because I always assumed it was the other way around. That someone had developed the idea for a potentially marketable anti-Catholic church aesthetic, and the music followed, to suit it.
In what universe was Tobias not a heavy metal kind of person? His first band was a death metal band named Repugnant. Unless we separate heavy metal from death metal.
Just stumbled on your channel trying to re-learn some Metallica I had forgotten, and I have to say...…….YOUR CHANNEL RULES!!!! Time to Binge Watch, LOL.…………..
Hey Ben, Saggio___ from instagram here! Since one month ago I got into Ghost "full-mode" and I love 'em, I can't wait to get a digitech drop pedal to play all the songs w/ my Black Beauty!! \m/ ( which is in standard tuning and I wanna let it like this XD ) \m/
@@TheeCapN You must be unfamiliar with what satanism is, and confusing it with worship of satan. Satanism is just a celebration of life itself. The central message as I understand it is this life is what we have, and we should make the most of it. That's pretty far from what you consider satanism to be. Literal worshippers of satan are no better than catholics or any other religion that spews fear and wants people to be their slaves, mentally and/or financially.
MY personal fave? For keyboard, it would have to be Secular Haze. For bass, it would be from the Pinicle to the Pit and for guitar it would be Majesty.
May the dark lord bless you. Again, super impressive lesson with my fav favorite band of all times, I couldn’t ask for more. Best lesson ever 🖤. Can you please make a video for spirit, a breakdown with tips how to play that fast. Thanks a lot man. Just an observation, that line, “the ultimate evil” I have heard it somewhere else 😂😂😂
I've been looking for videos breaking down Ghost songs for a long time!! Thanks Uncle Ben! And your tone is on point too!! How did you get your guitar tone?
"You've always got room to go lower in the song" was exactly my mind when I tried to transcribe Subjected to a Beating by Dying Fetus. Took me ages to figure out how they did it but as soon as I did it made so much sense. Slayer just got around it by just playing the D power chord without the root in Seasons of the Abyss and Hell Awaits.
Hi Ben! Thanks for DEMONstrating there is no actual evil in music itself... only cool mathematics! I've always said it's the "lyrics" in a song that determine whether the song is dark or light, vulgar or clean, sad or happy, etc..., and not what the instruments themselves are doing. Of course the instruments can certainly set a nice backdrop for support, but it's ultimately the lyrics that 'tell the story'.
fack Uncle Ben! I thought I was gonna learn how to make ghosty sounds on my GeeTar. I must be old - I never even heard of ghost! Sounds so sabbathy dark! woo!
Pinnacle to the Pit all the way. re new vid ideas. Hey Ben Do you have any methods/challenges of practicing fluid patch changes?. Theres the setup of the multifx or pedals, thats a given to know your equipment. The intra song sounds , especially live is a serious part of performing and touring. Did you ever specifically practice something to get better at flicking through the effects banks like a madman to access any variety of sounds for a practice/ improv session?
