I get that Chidori's memory loss is still exactly that, a loss. and with that there's a big grieving process over losing the Chidori Junpei got to know before... and I've heard the argument that her transferring life to the flowers was foreshadowing/possibility for her absorbing that life back, but I still feel like the narrative is better served without her revival ngl. I can understand the personal preference for Chidori. In my repeat playthroughs of P3FES The Journey in my early years, I went in not knowing how to trigger that revival scene. Then I saw it on RU-vid and was surprised to know that secret. But after contemplating on it, and after seeing the movies, I want to believe that the narrative with Memento Mori as a theme would be more effective if Chidori wasn’t physically revived… but keep the gift of life within Junpei. That scene with Junpei on the revelating part of the 4th movie before the decision with Ryoji still tears me up. As well as the rest of SEES in that moment.
@@mystery8820 The problem is, Arena Ultimax heavily hints that she did come back to life. ATLUS can't seem to make up their mind with Chidori. In the musical, in the MC route, stays dead, but in the FemC musical, she and Shinjiro come back (plus, apparently Shinji is shipteased with FemC? Not sure on that.). But in the movies, she dies there too. I would like some consistency, please.
There is a difference between saying her staying dead serves the narrative better and saying her survival completely breaks the themes of the narrative. I know you did not say that, but I hear that all the time, and I feel that reducing P3's themes to just Memento Mori is doing an injustice to P3, as I believe the true message of the game is that life is worth living even though death is inevitable. I think the revival is foreshadowed properly and isn't without consequence as Chidori still lost her memories, and Junpei has to rebuild his bond with her from scratch. What it also does is give hope to the group with the mini-miracle also foreshadowing the greater miracle to come during the promised day. Still, I respect your opinion as you can see my point of view. Honestly, I am far more bullheaded when defending Shinji's fate in the FeMC route, as there is so much more added to P3's themes and narrative than was taken away with that choice. If you ever decide to do a Shinji video, I'll give my thoughts on that then.
Another aspect of Junpei in the FeMC route is that he actually respects the Female Protag more than the male protag. Post-Shirakawa, in the MC route, Junpei goes "So you're the hero again, huh?" and acts really bitter towards the MC and in the subsequent weeks, when you try to talk to him, he gives a condescending remark and brushes you off rudely. In the FeMC route, he asks you "Hey, why do you try so hard?" in a more subdued tone and when you try to talk with him afterwards, he says "I'm sorry, but I need some space from you at the moment." I think the reason for this is the difference of attitude between the MC and the FeMC. The MC is apathetic, passively going along on the missions, doing what needs to be done, but still outshines Junpei, to the extent that it irritates him. The FeMC actively engages with the team and is a more proactive leader. Junpei's problem with both comes from the same place, his insecurity and inferiority complex, but his perception of the MC's effortless "specialness" allows him to build up resentment towards him to cover up his inferiority complex that he eventually grows out of. With the FeMC, he can't bring himself to resent her, and he comes off less bitter and more insecure and vulnerable during the post-Shirakawa section of the game. I find this fascinating. Yeah, Junpei's growth is one of the most satisfying arcs I've seen in Persona. His maturity in The Answer was unexpected, but well-earned. Also, my favourite Junpei moment is in P3P. As the FeMC, you can romance both Ken and Akihiko at the same time. And then, they both get into a cock fight in the optional conversations in Tartarus. (Ken surprisingly holds his ground quite well) Junpei, of all people, becomes the voice of reason here. That's when you know the situation's wack!
Something you touched I've been thinking for a while now. I love how P3 doesn't need social links with party members for their character arcs. Even with the girls, that original P3 has SLs, you can feel their growth and maturity more effectively than in P4, for instance (haven't played P5 yet, can't say too much about those). I find so cool that the evolution of their Personas come with the story and not with the SL, it gives me the idea that they're deepily affected with what's happening (that scene with Akihiko, man...). Junpei is one of the more fleshed out characters of p3, he has so much growth but is often forgotten in fan discussions. Thanks for making this video, it's a treat!
Junpei is one of the best examples of Persona 3's level of quality in the writing department, because he so quickly went from one of the most meh characters I've ever seen to one of my absolute favorites. He changes so much throughout the course of the game that it's truly inspiring to witness
Junpei is definitely one of my favorite Persona characters! My favorite memory isn't really a scripted game moment, but it still oddly fits in the narrative. My friend was introducing me to the Persona series starting with 3, so I was being given a lot of commentary throughout like how the Reaper exists and comes after you if you take too long in the dungeon crawl areas every game. After hearing about it, I had to see it. So I saved the game, wasted time waiting for it to show, and got into combat. Of course we both expected a wipe since this was early game. What we didn't expect was for Junpei to be the only one to survive said encounter. Both lost our minds over it because JUNPEI TANKED THAT HIT LIKE A BOSS. After that happened, it was like we got an accidental glimpse into Junpei's potential. All his self doubt and jealousy over the MC played out and we, in this meta perspective, had the knowledge that he was way stronger than he saw himself.
I played P3FES when i'm still in early high school so i can relate a lot with the characters. I hate junpei during the first half game, i find him annoying and childish. Then i reached the chidori arc and i started to see the change in junpei, for some reason junpei became the character i can relate the most and when junpei lost chidori i actually cried there. Junpei became one of the best character in the entire persona series for me. Yeah and i don't know you can "save" chidori until later in 2020's when i played P3FES again and tried to 100% (or close to 100%) the game in a single playthrough with a guide. I don't hate it, but i do like the story better when chidori died because junpei's growth and maturity makes sense in that situation.
I'd listen to a Yukari video. Junpei, outside of the state Megaten 2nd guy dynamic, is a pretty good character all around I definitely think he holds up really well 15 years later
I personally identify with Junpei to much it started hitting home hard.... luckily I've had a boringly normal and happy family life - but I've struggled with these same problems, of having purpose and meaning and being validated - but his relationship with Chidori is something that just hit me personally the hardest; my first serious long relationship was with a timid girl, who was depressed (MDD), struggling to find purpose and meaning in life, with red hair, whom opened up and was a very different person after we went our separate ways - I'm constantly rewatching the cutscenes with Junpei and Chidori from persona 3 reload, and it's heartwarming to see Junpei grow and mature - *_HE JUST LIKE ME FR FR 😭😭_*

I am inherently opposed to the very foundation of this video on the simple fact that Junpei is by far, one of the worst characters ever created in all of fiction. And the Persona 3 Portable version only made him WORSE for the FeMC route.
@@mystery8820 Not my fault that Junpei is literally one of the worst characters ever created, and they try to "redeem" him in ways that do not excuse his many sins. And if the flawed character video was talking about Junpei, the video did not go far enough.

The worst thing Junpei did was endangering all those people in the train, which was bad, but still no one got hurt and he only did that because of a accident. It's not like he wanted to kill everybody on the train for shits and giggles. He genuinely wanted to save someone that night. It was just a rookie mistake. Junpai just wanted to do something good and it simply didn't worked out perfectly.
