Ringo is still the most underrated drummer in Rock. This humble tribute is meant to illustrate the importance of Ringo Starr's unique drum work for the Beatles.
First of all, I need to get the credits right: Big thanks to Johnny Silver and Ian Watts for giving me permission to use their recordings for my sound samples.
Johnny Silver is one of the world’s finest John Lennon impersonators. He founded ‘The Silver Beatles’ more than 20 years ago. My dad joined his band in May 1999, the month I was born and he was with the Silver Beatles for as long as 10 years.
That’s the reason why Milena and I literally grew up with Beatles music. Ian Watts was with the Silver Beatles basically between 2002 and 2007. Yes, Ian is the producer of the Nursery Rhyme Collection that I started introducing every Tuesday. No, it's not a coincidence that some of those Nursery Rhymes feature a Beatlesque sound. Drummer on the Original Recordings was Steve Heappey (sorry Steve for erasing your parts, they were excellent!)
The keyboard solos for ‘In My Life’ and ‘Come Together’ were played by… right, Rick Benbow. He also played on 'Strawberry Fields'

Thanks, Sina, so much for posting this... both your awesome tribute, as well as sharing the link to your outstanding performance with your rockin' Dad and his Beatles cover band. I absolutely love the Beatles, and I agree that Ringo was the best drummer that they could have had. His innovation is quite underrated and often overlooked. Sina, I am so grateful for the ongoing musical education that you provide to your audience (and the world). Now, if I may brag just a bit... The most famous drummer of all time (no, not you, Sina, haha, but I do wish...) is going to be playing with his "All-Starr" band in my very own hometown just outside of Boston. Less than one mile from my house, and a mere 25 minutes walking distance!! And I just scored a pair of tickets in the secret "presale"... I have never seen Ringo live, so I think this is a once in a lifetime chance. Tickets are very expensive (but so is everything)... I can only hope that he will perform "The End" (his only drum solo as a Beatle)... Sorry if this is a weird thing to post, but I wanted to share this with Sina's audience. I'm going to have to rewatch this post several times and study his catalog over the next few months to prepare for a proper concert experience. Cheers, and peace, love and music forever!!!

@@sdustin7986 Yes, this "keep time" thing reminds me of the drummer character in the fictional movie "That Thing You Do." The title song which was originally composed as a slow love song took on a lively identity when the drummer took the liberty of tweaking up the beat, making the song an instant hit and their group "The Wonders" very popular.

Three things: 1. He played to serve the song. That's generosity, and humility. 2. He played behind the beat, lagging a bit (unless the song was very up-tempo), making the entire band sound wonderfully heavy. That's why nobody can emulate him. 3. He was a drummer/composer. So many innovative riffs, beats, and intros Beatles songs are so great, you tend to overlook the stellar work Ringo did.

I had an interview with Sir Paul many years ago where he talked about Ringo as being capable of repeating drum parts for hours and hours in the studio and acknowledged that he was often the hardest worker in the band. And John, Paul and George never instructed Ringo as to what they wanted, Ringo just did it-usually on the first take. He was solid as a rock as a drummer. One other factor that your group, emulating the Beatles is doing is emulating the very close harmony of the girl bands of the late 1950s and early 1960s. This is something that John, Paul and George emulated. Male vocalists were not doing what the women were doing at that time and the Beatles liked the sound, so they did the more feminine close-harmony vocals in their music. Later on, bands like the Bee Gees and The Beach Boys would do the same. Thank you for your tribute. I do hope Ringo sees it.

The Beach Boys vocal sound comes from Brian Wilson being fascinated with the Four Freshmen. Their group vocal sound predates the Beatles and is tied to American jazz harmony.

Ringo wasn't just a DRUMMER ...... He was a MUSICIAN - an ARTIST ...... in Classical Music the percussion parts are written down, just like the parts for the violins and flutes .... It was Ringo's disciplined understatement which seamlessly became as irreplaceable to the Beatles' songs, as the tympani and cymbal crashes of the great symphonic overtures of an earlier time..... And to think, there was a time when Paul criticized Ringo so often that he temporarily quit the band. It was when Paul played drums for "Back in the USSR." I'm glad George and John convinced Ringo to come back. Paul could be a jerk sometimes.

@@FRN2013 From what I've read, Ringo left during the White Album session because the tension in the band during that period was too high for him. There was no evidence that he left because of Paul and came back because the other two convinced him to. Paul (for the main part), John, and George all took turn to play drum in Back in the USSR while Ringo was away. This is well documented.

@@FRN2013 Do not trust Wiki. It's useful but not always reliable. You can check about this matter from other more reliable sources like Marc Lewisohn books or The Beatles Bible website. There were no evidence at all about Ringo leaving because of Paul's criticism.

Don't forget to show your girls the tribute group that grew into its own thing - the Bangles. Some great moments in their music and they play and sing it all too. Having mostly survived the heady excess of 1980s LA, the expectations of young women in pop and the unrelenting star machine of 'the Industry', they continue to play and fly the flag for intuitive teamwork and blend in their musical arrangements. I'm 65 years old and I've listened to the beatles since their first albums. And I always paid attention to Ringo's work. No one thought he was a good drummer, everyone wanted speed and long solos. But ringo played for the songs, he did things that nobody ever did before and always innovative, without him the Beatles wouldn't be as big as they are. Besides being a talented drummer you are sensitive. smart and knows that music is not juggling for the public. It is creativity, parsimony and elegance. You are elegant as Ringo Starr. Sina , as a boy born in Germany in 62 , I came to the USA in 66 back to Germany in 72 and back to the states in 74. I started playing at age 7 in 69 . By age 12 , I was playing clubs , by age 20 opening shows for Narvel Felts. I've played with many of the worlds greatest musicians and in 1999 became a member of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. In 2011 I was inducted as an Artist due to the fact that I also sing , write , play guitar and bass . However I'm still playing drums and singing because this was my 1st love. I'm not a fancy drummer , I play what the song needs . I'm 60 Today and I find it very nice to see young people actually interested in learning and teaching music . May I say from one deutchlander to another , I'm proud of You , keep making music and stay grounded. Stay humble and be yourself . Now I even understand why I never could play a Beatles song on drums, because I did not understand the concept. I first heard Sina, collaborating with other young artists, performing the Abby Road B-side medley. I was blown away (and infinitely happy) to see & hear young artists paying tribute to THE greatest band of all time. Sina and her collaborators renewed my faith in the younger generation not losing sight of what is and makes for timeless art! This video further demonstrates the appreciation as well as the technical understanding Sina, herself, has for the art & craft of music, especially the drums. I, literally, grew up listening to the Beatles (family story that my mother turned up the TV loud so that her unborn youngest child - me - would hear them on Ed Sullivan in Feb '64, just weeks before being born). I've always appreciated the art and creativity of each member of the Fab Four, but Sina has given me a greater appreciation of Ringo as a drummer and artist. Sina proves herself quite the talented, knowledgeable, and humble artist in her own rite. This in itself seems a living tribute to Mr. Starkey. May you go far, Sina. You have an appreciative fan for life. Keep on Rockin'!

Could listen to Sina cover Ringo flawlessly all day long. I never, in all my years of listening to the Beatles, realized just how utterly unique a talent Ringo was as a drummer. How could I have never realized that? So very happy I came across this amazingly talented young lady who was able to show me what I’d somehow been missing all my life.

What amazes me is how Ringo changed from a good drummer in the Beatles early years to one of the best in the world in their mid period. Being left handed actually created his unique sound.

Thank God, they didn't keep Pete Best. They would not have progressed nearly as far as they did in such a short period of time. Best was only mediocre. It's ironic that his last name is "Best".

I played many of these songs as a 10 year old. Yes, headphones had been invented by then but being a 10 year old, I didn't have money for stuff like that. Instead, my Dad put in a speaker right over my kit so I could run down to the basement and start playing to the record, be it The White Album, Rubber Soul, Abbey Road or Let it Be. In 1968 - 1969, I couldn't even imagine what we have access to today! I learned quite a bit from Sina and confirmed what I've always suspected and that is, being a right handed drummer and Ringo being left handed, I never got even close to what Sina pulled off in this video. Great work and thanks for being a new generation of Beatles fans! (If you want a great read, try "The Beatles - A Biography" by Bob Spitz) Thank you! Great drumming! It's made my day!

Sina this is the first time that I have commented on one of your videos. My dad was a jazz drummer for over 40 years of his life, had three separate trios while I was growing up, and hated Rock and Roll. He wanted to watch The Beatles when they were on the Ed Sullivan show to see what the excitement was all about this group coming from England. After watching them he said to us "that drummer is bread and butter of that group". I really didn't understand him at the time, as a young kid, but years later he told me what he meant. Today's video reminded me of that moment back in "63" and brought great memories of my time with him. Thanks for the video and the memories.

I think one thing you must realize with Ringo Starr's skills is that his drum kit had basically the most rudimentary components, totally unlike what you see with modern drum kits with dozens of cymbals, tom-toms galore, etc. It's what he did with what he had was where the magic was.

this is perfectly described. so innovative. i don't care if people think he was poor. i just know what i like. no other drummer in history could play "a day in the life" as perfectly suited to the song as ringo did. i love the isolated track of that. his finest moment for me. a leftie playing a right handed kit is so underestimated too, it's what makes ringo's sound so difficult to replicate.

I think the number of drums and cymbals is irrelevant. A ton of hugely respected and renown drummers chose smaller kits. Plus he had the size of ket because he chose it. His contemporaries like Moon, Baker and Mitchell and others opted for larger kits with 7 or more drums, double bass and a host of cymbals. If Ringo wanted a different sound he would opt for some other percussion instrument, maracas, tambourine, congas or hand claps.

This is the video that introduced me to Sina Drums quite a while ago. I imagine it popped up because I had viewed so much Beatles content. Your videos have brought me much joy. I love your dad too. He's probably a little younger than me, but I also have a daughter who grew up listens to and loves The Beatles. We Saw McCartney in Nashville before she joined she left home to be on her own. Best compliment I ever heard of a musician was: he never had a wasted note. I heard this about George Harrison but it also applies to Paul and Ringo. This is why they were so brilliant.

As been a Beatles fan for over 50 years now, and with the song that started my liking of the Beatles when i was 8yrs old was yellow submarine and i also remember i had the Beatles breakfast bowl and plates wish i still had them. As a drummer myself of some 50+ years..Ringo is unique. A brilliant less is more and always the perfect fill for the song. Incredible feel, timing and use of toms. He may not be Buddy Rich, Tony Williams or John Bonham etc. but he is Ringo and that's all need be said. He's been my teacher and I love everything he does. He's the living proof that feel and unique use of the kit outweighs speed and even rudiments...he's a natural and no-one else could have given The Beatles the feel that he did.

Believe it or not Led Z had to do a lot of takes with Bonham b/c his timing was off a LOT!! Bonham may have bee able to hit the drums very hard but where is the style?

Other reasons Ringo was essential to the Beatles: he could play the same tempo over and over without a click track, allowing the Beatles to piece together songs from different takes. He could adapt to the different directions John, George, and Paul were experimenting with, with George's Eastern style music, for example, completely different than John's hard rock. The other big thing is the left handed/right handed thing commented on in the video. All that said, Sina seems just as good!

Your point is well taken. Ringo wasn't just playing drums, he was composing a distinct and unique drum part for each original Beatles song that was arguably as important an element to the song's success as the vocals and guitar parts. The striking thing about the Beatles is how well they played together, despite personal tensions that arose. The primary binding element was Ringo's drum part. He listened to the nuances of the vocal and guitar parts and always managed to provide a complimentary percussion part that enhanced each song with a striking sense of musicality. He was as essential an ingredient to the chemistry of the group as was John Lennon.

I can’t get enough of them. I’m learning drums, bass, ukulele and piano atm and you can only learn from the best. The Beatles are without doubt my favourite band :) I’m 14 and just the other day me and some of my friends were arguing about the meaning behind ‘hey bulldog’ only to google it when we got home and find that Lennon said it was just a good sounding song that meant nothing lol. Everyone knows them. Not everyone is a fan obviously, but people generally respect them regardless of if they are a fan or not. Me and a fairly large group of my friends are pretty obsessed with them atm. We’re all 14-17 in age. But they’ll just go down in history. Like Beethoven and Tchaikovsky they’ll be remembered forever. I’m personally pretty into any music but I’ve recently taken an interest into 50s to 70s music especially, I often talk about musicians from around then that most people nowadays don’t really know of. But with out fail everyone seems to know and have listened to at least a bit of The Beatles which is honestly pretty damn impressive. Especially for the fact I’m Dutch lol.

The Beatles didn’t really become the band we love UNTIL Ringo joined in 1962. He and then George Martin were the two final critical elements. Thank you for sharing your talent and for offering absolute proof that Ringo was and is one of the best rock drummers ever. I’ve seen other videos on this subject but you have easily produced one of the best yet! John Lennon always asked other drummers he worked with after The Beatles to “play it like Ringo” but they never could quite match him. This video helps show why that was so.

He starts on the the high tom, but leads with the left hand. Keeps his left hand hitting the hi tom, then works in the second tom (twice), then puts the last bang on the floor tom. There are some other surprising fills in here. Note he sometimes just hits the same two toms repeatedly. Just lead with the left hand and it becomes clear! Clear as mud. Good heavens far too techie for me. However you seem to know what you are talking about. In one of his videos he explains the difficulty he has in going clockwise round the kit playing Come Together. He said it is due to him being a left handed drummer who plays on a kit that is set up right handed. To the naked eye it appears Ringo is going anticlockwise, as does Sina, coping him to the letter. Showing, not only her talent but desire for perfection. @@dcaccavo1

Dang! Beat me to it. I was 11-12 when the British invasion hit in '63-64 and experienced ALL of it from a pre-teen to early teenage prospective. It was truly a magical time. I remember going to our "picture show" in the small one screen theater in Dequincy, LA, USA in 1964 to see our heroes in their first big full length motion picture "A Hard Day's Night". I was a male Beatle fan, but not a maniac; just a big fan. Remember those days fondly in the 6th and 7th grade.

I saw an interview with Paul McCartney where he talked about when they first added Ringo to the group. Paul said that Ringo was the first "professional" drummer they had ever had and the difference was like night and day. With other drummers, you never knew what you were going to get. They might be fast, or slow during various sections of a song, but with Ringo, he was always right-on tempo consistently throughout any song he played. And he played as a part of the group to make the sound better, not to show off what he could do.

Perhaps thirty years ago a drum shop did an interesting experiment. They invited about 20 established drummers, in all styles, to play to a metronome for about ten minutes, then they turned of the metronome. The drummers were to keep the rhythm. After ten more minutes they brought the metronome beat back in and measured how close the drummer was to the original beat. All the players were close, but some had fallen behind only slightly, and others were ahead of the beat only slightly. There was only one drummer that was exactly on the beat...Ringo.

"Best Drummer" is kind of like "Best Athlete" vs. "Best Football player"...It doesn't matter how fast you run or how far you can throw the ball if you don't play within the framework of the team concept. That's where Ringo was a certified genius in his own and worthy of his role in the greatest pop music band of all time. He fit like a glove with the other three.

AWESOME !!! RINGO IS UNDERATED but never was by his peers and his beautiful Beatle Brothers John , Paul & George. The greatest tribute I can say here is that Ringo once fondly remembered a story where John was in the studio with him listening to a song and said Ringo I want you to do it that way...Ringo replied... but John its two drummers..to which John replied...well dont let that bother you...such was his confidence in his Beatle Brothers drumming. In August of 1980 when John was recording Double Fantasy that admiration of Ringos drumming remained when he told The session drummer for Double Fantasy Andy Newmark..."John would often say to me Keep it simple Andy and play like Ringo. Ringo is a total groove player and that is what John likes....I prayed daily that Ringos spirit would inhabit me.... THANKS for keeping exceptional Ringos drumming alive and appreciated for generations to come JOHN PAUL GEORGE RINGO 4 EVA
