Steve really shines when he is played aggressively, it's a very important thing to note when discussing how difficult he is because playing an aggressive style and playing a SMART aggressive style are 2 very different things. You gotta know when to go in and you gotta know when to lay off and bait the panic hopkick, it's a skill on it's own.

As a Steve main I thank you for finally explaining why Steve is so hard to play. People often have no idea and call him easy or cheap, but they never even tried him out. Very good video, you mentioned all the important points. For me it's what makes me keep playing this character: his difficulty. He is very demanding, but damn, it's so rewarding and satisfying when you do win.

@kstyle5254
@kstyle5254 5 лет назад
In my opinion you have to play mind games with the opponent and be aggressive in order to win with Steve. In most matches I find that if you counter hit quite a few of your opponents moves this leads them to turtle more because they don't want to eat a combo. When this happens I put pressure with peek a boo and flicker. Also thing to note is if you're in peek a boo and you feel like they re about to press a button pressing 2 will punish them

I think every Tekken character should be designed in the same fashion as Steve, in the sense that he's very unique without generic stuff shared by other characters. I say this because I really want them to do away with generic hopkicks and df2 uppercut launchers. I think launchers shouldn't be so abusable like hopkicks. Just look at Steve, Bryan, Dragunov, Kaz, Heihachi etc. Great characters that rely solely on their own unique tools. I think hopkicks are antiquated and should be replaced, especially because they can lead to massive damage at the cost of what? A 12 frame punish? Not to mention they look awkward and janky aesthetic wise. And it'll also mitigate the juggle fest that Tekken has become and turns many newer players off. We'll see far more footsies and neutral play. Every character should have their own unique answers to 15f punish. Launchers would be slower, requiring you to either telegraph or anticipate in using them, making those reads and the follow up combo actually rare but also impressive for once. Some combos are tuff sure, but they get old real fast, Tekken should be "toe to toe" not "who can dribble a basketball better".

@TheDocbach
@TheDocbach 5 лет назад
While Steve does not have the frames to really launch punish that well, it is pretty easy to sneak in launches with counter hits and with his 4,1,2. I find that the most difficult part of Steve is learning how to mix up everything with his duck game. Albatros into Peekaboo is pretty straight forward for when you need to close the distance and still mix things up. I will say that Steve is probably the most range dependent character in the game next to Hwoarang. He needs to be right up close to really be a threat with his duck game and Peekaboo. Albatross is fancy but its easy to see the mix ups from it. If you keep Steve at mid range with lots of mids and you never side step, its pretty hard for the Steve player make things happen. He is pretty much waiting for counter hits at that point.

I think these videos are helping a lot TMM, thank you for covering Steve. You know often time people that play gimmicky characters that have a lot of bullshit think that people like me are being hateful when I refuse to give them the same respect as people that use some of these challenging characters. I'm not saying that people that use those characters cannot be skilled in their own right, but I'm just not going to say that those characters are just as challenging as my character if it's a lie. Use whatever character you like, but be willing to admit an easier character is easier. That's why easy and difficult characters exist. I don't believe in using the difficulty as an excuse or crutch for when you lose, because you take that on when you choose them, however don't disrespect the fact that the effort we both put in is not equal. Some characters are easier than others and some characters have more tools.

@Shadow456376
@Shadow456376 5 лет назад
Jordan I don’t disagree. As a character King is definitely more “complete” and has a bigger repertoire of stuff to do. As far as execution though there’s like a wide operating range for him. @@Shadow456376 It still doesn't seem like King has a higher execution barrier than Steve overall (and I can do all of his Throw Combos) when pulling off any Steve BnB combo requires pretty high skill, where King obviously isn't a basic character but beyond some specific tools has a fairly accessible skill level even with iSW, throw chains, and his optimal damage combos.

In fact, she's harder than Steve to use properly. She's also much more difficult to win with consistently. She's a bottom tier character. Steve is top tier. Steve's stances are also not that difficult to utilize. TMM is exaggerating, as always. I'm not saying that Steve isn't difficult to use properly, but what I'm saying is that he is no harder than Nina. Nina is actually harder! Couse she has a lot of easy to do annoying plus on block strings and mixups. The only thing with Nina that needs a little practice are butterfly combos and string cancels ( wich are pretty easy too ). Compering that to Steve where anything requires fundamental skill, execution, match up knowlowedge and his hard game plan is really dumb. I understand that you like Nina ( i love her too ) but lets be real with our selfes. We both know if we had 3 categories of difficulity : Beginner, Intermidiate and Advanced. She would be Intermidiate difficulity at most.

one amazing advantage steve has is the side step to side sway combo, immediately puts you behind opponents on big whiffs faster than any normal sidestep, its a guaranteed PAB combo from there.. some things i dont like about steve now is they removed some stuns from counterhits (albatross + 2(mid), and also the ff2 str8 cross punch(high). b2 is great for counterhits but its only high. also before you can pull off an albatross from a 121 combo, there's a slight delay now.

The thing with Steve is that he has too many high moves and no fast and damaging mids His execution is tough and I am okay with that, but not having any decent fast launchers and only having to rely on b1 and df2, makes it disappointing to play him. And then they nerfed df2 LOL

Tell me about it. As a returning Steve main from T5, his learning curve has been raised through the roof. In T5, his df+2 launched aside from his b+1 counter hit. His db+2 also knocked down. 3+4,2 was a launcher on counter hit. Not to mention his sidestep could dodge everything.

When I say he's not hard, I basically just mean execution... I have a harder time deciding whether or not to df2 than doing his extdck1 combo... Whatever, roast my elitist ass proudly.

I think the technical executions isn't a problem for Steve you just have to get used to it. Even with 3 or below bars most of the time it's still manageable unlike Lee. The most difficult part is probably utilizing all of his stances for good pressure and not only PAB stance.
@moze8095

You can watch my videos or Fighters Generation's channel that has many Steve's highlights play. Based on my experiences: 1. Big combos damage with his quick rage drive and rage art 2. Best CH character with his b+1 Although almost all his movesets are having counter properties 3. Best rushdown-pressure-poke character if you like aggresive all-out attack play 4. Dodge. You can get perfect easily if you can read opponent's playstyle, dodge and launch their strings 5. No need for kbd or sidewalk/sidestep, you can focus attacking while dodging or blocking opponen't strings 6. Almost all his moves have shortest recovery frames compares to others, so you can presure play safely 7. Best wall carry and damage 8. Best for baiting opponent and fun to play

@@cucuy98 Absolutely untrue, and that comes from a Steve main. Only people that have never actually used Hwo think he is an easy character. He is very challenging at high level and his stances are very complex, requires a lot of knowledge. These type of videos are why people don't respect gimmicky characters like Ling. Maybe now people can understand why those kind of characters get shit from the community. People think they understand these characters but have never tried to use them before. In other words they speak from ignorance. I may not like gimmick characters, but I will at least understand them, even if it is just to counter them.
