What makes the best iSUP for surfing?

With well over a hundred brands in the iSUP world, and pretty much all of them making inflatable SUPs for surfing, there really is a colour and price point board for everyone. But what is the different between an iSUP that catches waves and an iSUP that really rides waves?! Over the past few years we have had the chance to test loads of different iSUPs, and we feel that the best iSUPs for surfing all have a few key design points in common. We go over which board designs and qualities we think make the best surfing iSUPs and why.

Thanks for these videos, they are packed with info yet concise, hard to find these days. You have helped me find my feet with SUP - I've bought a 2nd hand Loco hard board which I'm loving but it lives in Ireland and I only use it every few months or so when I visit (shame but I live in London). As funds are limited but I'm itching to get something I can play around on and travel with, I've pre-ordered a Two Bare Feet Aerostar which though cheap looks interesting. I'd love a Red Paddle Whip or similar but having splashed out on a hard board I really can't afford it. I couldn't find a video from you guys about the Aerostar and I guess they are only just being released. Might you review this in the future? Again, thanks for giving me so much info about SUP

Hi Chris, thanks for your comment and glad you are hooked on SUP and we may of helped with that. No we haven't seen the new Aerostar yet but would love to give it a go. We will be getting loads of new boards to review for the 2019 season soon. But not sure if we have one on the schedule yet. Thanks Reuben / SUPboarder

You guys do very good reviews, tips and tricks on SUPs. In fact, so good, as a newbie in this sport, it is over whelming to find the first starter board. I have surfed most of my life and fairly experienced in the surf, and recently tried SUPs, (now hooked). Given good experience, for a sub 75kg guy, can you suggest a budget (good value) iSuP for surfing ? I'min NA so ideally something I may be able to purchase online in NA (Amazon of something...) Appreciate it. Thanks

Hi Ravin, Thanks for your comment. Glad that you are loving SUP and are looking at getting your first board. You are right the choices are endless when it comes to iSUPs. It might be easier to tell us what boards you can get online and delivered to you. Maybe something like an Aqua Marina Rapid, that we'll have a review of out in 2 weeks time? There’s also some other videos that you would find interesting on our SUPboarder Pro site. Its a subscription service unfortunately but there is some great videos on there you might find very useful. This also supports us in continuing to deliver you top independent stand up paddle boarding content by reducing our reliance on advertising. Check out the content list here : www.supboardermag.com/category/subscriber-pro/ Let us know about the boards? Thanks Reuben

Thanks Reuben. I was looking at the Air Degree ( The green one) that I can get at a reasonable price, and interesting enough, the Aqua Marina Rapid has also just come up. Both are at very good price point and right within my initial comfort level for getting into this sport. Looking forward to your review on the Rapid. I did look at the riber, but by the time I place the order from UK, conversion, shipping and taxes, its up near the $1K mark. Both Air Degree and the Rapid are in the $500's, so might end up going with one of those depending on your review. I will look at subscribing as I get more and more into this new sport for me. Thanks and keep up the great work. Rav

Since you've done a review of the Itiwit 500 Surf ISUP, which would you put top place? Thanks!

On a wave the Itiwit is the best. The other brands all offer better packages

Hello, really like your content, find it really helpful. I am in process of choosing my iSUP. I usually ride on flat water but would love to try to catch some waves on Danish west coast once/twice a month. Unfortunately I do not have room for two, is there an all rounder I could consider ? I am 110 kg ? Thanks a lot for help

Thanks for the comment. There are some good 'hybrid' boards on the market like the JP Fusion 10'8 x 34" or the JP Australia Hybrid 11'6 x 32" that suit both waves and flat water. Looking for boards that have some length over 10ft with a width of around 32"+ is a great starting point. Make sure you go bigger with the volume and width so you get added stability in the surf. Hope this helps. Beau

Nice video, thanks. Decathlon have what looks like a fairly new board on the market, the Itiwit 500 Surf iSUP (they have a hard board version of it too). It seems to tick all the boxes you mention and more, since it has a semi-rigid rail on the tail which I've not seen anywhere else yet (and may never see at the prices that they offer). The only thing holding me back from getting one is that there are practically no reviews of it and no videos either. I'm a bit over the recommender weight at 95kg, but that's not for being out of shape, I'm 6'5" and fairly fit so I'd like to think that the 175l volume of the larger board should be sufficient (and fun) for me. My only real concern there is flex. They recommend 17psi which is a good sign, but I think your flex test would be the ideal thing to have (and of course an actual surfing test, the fun part!) Do you have initial comments on this board? It would of course be cool if you got hold of one for review too, but I think I might have mine by that time;-)

Hey Andrew. I want a go! Sounds like an interesting board for sure. I will try and get one for review. But sounds like you are going to buy it soon. If you do let us know. But just start off on flat water and get used to the feel of the board. Remember board stiffness comes down to a few things. Quality of construction. Quality of materials, SUP thickness, PSI pressure and extra stuff like battens etc. This one one thing that the top brands do do best. But the tail shape sounds great! Thanks Reuben / SUPboarder

Thanks for your reply Reuben. I've ended up going for more of an all-rounder to start with, mainly because I have a young family to consider too and I can't see me getting anyone but myself on any reasonably decent surf sup. Still taking your comments in this video into consideration I've gone for an Aquaplanet Pace which at least has a narrower tail and 3 fins compared to most other budget 10'6" x 6" iSUPs which are often wider with single fin. I'll have the kids out more on the flat water of course;-) I think this will get me going for now, but I still have my eyes set on a more surf specific iSUP for the future so I would definately be interested in hearing more about the ITIWIT surf iSUP if you manage to get hold of one. Your opinion would still mean a lot on this one. I'm subscribed for future updates, so I'll keep my eyes peeled! Cheers again, Andrew

|Interesting video. Any chance you can produce a top-5 of the best surf iSUPs? It'd be interesting to hear your opinion on the current best surf iSup. As an RP Whip owner, I'd love to see where it sits in your top-5. Thanks.

Staying on the iSUP surf theme, would it also be possible to do an (semi-serious) instructional-type video on how to surf a 10ft-plus all-round iSUP? A large-volume thick-railed iSUP like the Red Paddle 10-6 Ride or equivalent. A video showing the maximum level of surf performance we can expect from that type of board would be very useful as well as expalining the limitations of such a board. It would be quite interesting to see you surfing this type if board in metre+ waves and getting the maximum out of it. There are very few videos on RU-vid of skilled SUP Surfers taking these all-round iSUPs out into the surf. Keep up the great work, Reuben. Cheers.

yeah, it could do with a bit more rocker to be perfect but the Aqua Marina Wave is a good board for the price supboardermag.com/equipment_guide/aqua-marina-wave-88-beginner-surf-isup-review/

Have a whitewater board with a 4 fin set up. Decent for surfing?
@SUPboardermag
@SUPboardermag 6 лет назад
Give it a go Steve. Really depends on how big the fins are? And how wide the tail of the board is. Narrower is always better when it comes to iSUPs in the surf.
@stevethomas760

I have several fin options that I can try, 2"/3". One of the WW boards has a center 5" fin, both are pretty wide in the stern. Going to give it a go. If nothing else I'll learn a bit more paddling. Thanks for the help

you forgot to talk about wind. the thicker boards are heavily affected by wind. thats the bigger problem for me, lots of wind in Portugal

Hey David. A question we are getting asked a lot lately. We haven't used one yet, but I think its on the list to check out in the future for sure. Board quality and design looks good on our first impressions. Sorry we cant help at the moment.
