What Makes The Boeing 757 An Iconic Aircraft?

Long Haul by Simple Flying

It has been over four decades since the Boeing 757 took to the skies for the first time. Developed as a successor to the Boeing 727, it may not have been the best-selling single-aisle model in Boeing's history, but it’s a type that many pilots and aviation enthusiasts respect and revere. While it’s no longer in production, the 757 continues to serve in commercial and cargo operations today.
But what, exactly, gives the 757 its iconic status? What is it about the jet that people love?

B-757 (arguably the best Aircraft ever designed by Boeing): She was powerful, beautifully designed, super stable, reliable, ETOPS certified... Spacious cockpit and galleys, formidable wings and stabilisers... She was Loved by Pilots and Crews!!!

The best part is the iconic Rolls Royce engine high pitched takeoff sound, spinning upwards for an insane amount of time, instead of just having a low pitched rumbling noise like most other aircraft.

Years ago, as a flight attendant, I worked on the 737, 757 and 767. I always preferred the 757 over the others. It was tremendously powerful, and with the RB engines, the roar right after takeoff was iconic. I cannot tell you how many times passengers near the engines got a fright, and we had to calm them down that this was the noise it always made as it climbed out. Also, having a cabin crew of 5-6 was a lot more fun than the standard 3. Later on, flying out of short runways on hot days was always possible. Arkia for years had a 757-300 do the Eilat-Tel Aviv run from the old airport with a 6,500 foot runway, also in temperatures exceeding 45 degrees c. Took off like a rocket with 260 passengers onboard.

The 757 to me is still the best airplane in the same class as the A321 series models. No matter how old it is now, the Boeing 757 was and still is the amazing development Boeing brought fourth in the late '70s. It's quite understandable that it is overpowered, but the terrific economics of these two great engine types Boeing picked for this airplane back in the day. The RR-RB-211-535s are rather noisy on the ramp, while the P&W PW-2000s are more quiet and both create "raw power" on the climb out, using less runway. A lot of pilots and flight crews to this day miss the 757 so terribly, because it was a quality built airplane that showed impressive results for the airlines. It certainly is a wonderful airplane to me.

My favorite thing about the 757 is the ability to use the L2 door for boarding like on the larger widebody aircraft thus separating first/business class & economy passengers during boarding. I flew first class on a United 757-300 (former CO/CAL bird) back in 2019 and the L2 cabin door was used for boarding & deplaning.

It is indeed regrettable that there isn't a new version of the Boeing 757 and with the multi-problems of which includes different facets faced by Boeing it seems very unlikely this so-called replacement will ever takeoff. We can only suffice ourselves with the newer Airbus A321XLR and consign this historic plane into the history books soon. All we can hope is that the next generation Hydrogen/Electric Models can fare better than their fossil fuel counterparts when they arrive in the 2030s.

People suddenly love it because they wanted to pile as much crap on Boeing as possible for screwing up the MAX and missing the chance to rival the A321 XLR. Look, Boeing was right to cull the 757 when it did 20 years ago, the middle-of-market (MOM) hadn’t taken off yet and the 737 was selling like hotcakes, so airlines didn’t need an oversized narrowbody at the time. In hindsight, maybe they should’ve modernized it and made an A321 rival, but I don’t think it would’ve stood much of a chance. The 757 is much bigger and heavier, so even new engines and modernized structures might still have made it uneconomical against the A321. Boeing should just focus on getting their s**t together with their current programs, mend the company culture and employee relationships and then absolutely cook with the 797. That has always been talked about as the MOM aircraft to replacing the 737 and fit in the capacity gap left by the 757. Having said all that, I do like the 757’s bottlenose dolphin nose and I’ve always wanted to experience takeoff in one. I hope my time will come sooner rather than later.

I used to fly this one as a child when I was sent to my grandparents in Colorado from Seattle. I loved the powerful takeoff, but I hated the deplaning. As a standby flier, I was often in the back. That meant that, once we'd landed, I had to wait for everyone in front of me to get their crap and get off. It was frustrating, and I loved it. Back then it was in that rainbow theme too, which was iconic.

At timestamp 2:19 it shows a United Airlines 757-200 with PW2037 engines (N594UA, now in service with FedEx) while narrating the RB211 counterpart. The airline already retired all its Pratt & Whitney-engined 757s, the current are ex-Continental ones with the latter counterpart.

I flew in a Delta 757-200 only once, that was back in June 1991 from Los Angeles (LAX) to LaGuardia, with a stop in Cincinati (Kentucky). I found it very cramped, probably because of the seats in the rear of the plane. I enjoyed much more a fight on a Delta 767-200. The 2-3-2 seating along with the wider cabin was far more relaxing.

It's a fantastic plane but ultimately it was overpowered and too performant to be economical. It only really survived whilst it had a monopoly on the sector, but when the A321 came into service it could do 90% of the missions more economically. Then eventually the 737-900ER followed suit

It seems that an update with more efficient engines and better use of light weight materials should make a 757-NEO a success. They will say that is the 787-8, but not really as it’s a more expensive widebody.
